2018 Kia Stinger GT vs 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Sport | Head to Head comparison

  • It's Q50 vs Stinger time and there can only be one winner. Infiniti has long sold on value and a reputation for being "the Japanese BMW" but can their value hold up against an upstart Korean brand? Which car is right for you is perhaps the more important question so we cover that as well.

The fit and finish, superior chasis, super suspension designs, superior engine, transmission,... The Stinger is just a bigger car with some fancy gadgets on it, but not on par with a real premium car like the q50. Hell, it even manages to outweight the q50, even though the infiniti is already quite heavy itself.

    Great comparison. Thank you very much! Anxiously awaiting a comparison putting the Stinger GT vs Q50 Red Sport. That being said, a lot of people aren't understanding why the Stinger GT is worth the $50k price tag. It's not an Optima with a twin turbo V6. It's a car developed by big names in the industry from Audi and BMW - and compares to cars like the S5 Sportback and 440i Gran Coupe. You'll never see cars like the Optima, Sonata, Malibu, etcetera - compared to cars like that.
    This is a rear wheel drive car that's capable of 0-60 in 4.4 seconds with the best warranty in the business. Why is Kia building a car like this? Why not? If you owned Kia, why wouldn't you want to offer the best products you can? If you're capable of building a car that can compete with Audi and BMW - do you avoid building it? Of course not. And here we are...

    • @2Phast4Rocket
      @2Phast4Rocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      But in the end, it is still a KIA and people will still value as a KIA instead of a more expensive German car, or even a Japanese luxury car. Car value is mostly based on its name and perception and the Kia perception is an economy car despite all its one off superior performance.

    • @kiastingerforum7621
      @kiastingerforum7621 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I can't argue with you there - perception is everything. But that's exactly what the Stinger is here to do. It's here to change minds...

    • @2Phast4Rocket
      @2Phast4Rocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is unclear what marketing strategy KIA plans for its performance car. In the past the Japanese car companies created new brands such as Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti to sell their high performance luxury car. The most successful has been Lexus because Toyota has sustained the brand by making each generation of Lexus more different than its Camry namesake. Will KIA has the capital to sustain this performance direction, we just don't know yet. Adding performance to a pedestrian cars have been done countless of time. Changing perception is hard and few companies can pull it off. As in the example of the Japanese cars, Acura is only seen as a more luxury Honda Accord, forever.

    • @kiastingerforum7621
      @kiastingerforum7621 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The biggest problem with Acura is that their TL or TLX basically IS a Honda Accord. the TLX is an important car for Acura. It's more or less their E-Class, 5-Series, Lexus GS competitor. It's too important of a vehicle to be almost exactly what the Honda Accord is. I know this because I own a 2016 Honda Accord Touring V6 - and I cross-shopped the Acura TLX. They're the same car. Look at the interior. Way, WAY too much resemblance. There was really no reason for me to buy the Acura. The RL is a nice car but it's not nearly on the level of the cars it's supposed to compete wth. Where does Acura really compete? With who? Lincoln?
      Hyundai went 7 years with the Genesis Coupe and Genesis Sedan before launching "Genesis Motors" as a sub brand. The Stinger has been in the U.S. market for bearly a week. Let's give them a chance. They're moving in the right direction. The Stinger is their first car that people across all brands want to buy. I'm not saying every BMW buyer wants a Stinger. I'm saying that there are now Audi and BMW buyers who would, for the first time ever, buy a Kia. That is "huge"...
      Do you know how many years it took Cadillac to convince BMW buyers the CTS was a viable competitor? More than you can count on your hands, that's for sure. Right here we're at the first model year of the Stinger and here we are with comparisons in every car magazine. Kia did good...

    • @2Phast4Rocket
      @2Phast4Rocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My observation with Acura too. That was why I bought a Honda Accord instead of an Acura which is an Accord EXL+. Genesis is still viewed as a Hyundai. CTS is still viewed as a Cadillac but it is now marketed toward the younger set instead of the traditional Cadillac buyers who are close to retirement age.
      Anyway, my comment still stands regarding Kia marketing strategy about the Stinger. First of which, get rid of the KIA brand. It's too close to Killed in Action, which is a no-no in the world of marketing. What the hell are they thinking. They should have learned from GM debacle with the Nova, aka, NO Go.

They fly off the lot and with the warranty and the proven reliability of the 3.3L the car is really unmatched. Kia isn't the buy one get one brand any more, they're actually much nicer than any Nissan product on the road, go to a dealer and check them out and spend some time in them.

  • @papayaman123
    @papayaman123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    You made a better good point in the end. When you buy the Infiniti you'll get treated as a luxury customer at the dealership and service will be as such whereas at Kia you'll be getting the same service as the one who drives a Kia Rio. Similarly priced, a large population would rather get the Infiniti.

      It's stupid to care about brands, No shame to say you got an Kia Stinger, it's an awesome car. I hate Ford and I'm driving a Ford Fiesta ST because it's an awesome little car.

    • @b9s462
      @b9s462 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ben Saying its stupid to care about brands is subjective at best. Not calling you out. But to say "brand is stupid", can easily be countered by saying "you wouldn't say that if you could afford the brand".
      The issue isn't the KIA Stinger. The issue is the price tag for the KIA. Let me explain. If the KIA Stinger GT1-2 costed 30K-39K, no one would care. That's fair pricing for a KIA, especially a higher end KIA. But, but, once you hit a 40K-50K mark price tag, that's the problem. If you can afford a 40K plus car, brand is a consideration. Luxury consumer experience is a consideration. Everything gets taken into account. IE: A KIA Stinger paid 50K for a car, goes into service at a KIA dealer, and gets a loaner of a KIA Rio? The issue here is KIA doesn't have the supply to give you Stinger loaners. They will give you something that is 50% the value of your car. While actual luxury car companies, give you similar value car while your car is in service.
      The problem with the Stinger is the KIA brand, they should have called it the Genesis Stinger. That would be smarter. Because a 50K car is luxury money.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you watch the Video, or Doug Demaros video or any other reviews? It's a great car, you get MORE than you do with luxury car brands, for less money.
      I'm sure KIA wanted their pricing to be competitive and with the quality and the amount of stuff they put in to the car, that's the price they had to go with to make any profit, actually a lot of car manufactures flagship cars actually lose money on each sale, I'm not sure if this is the case for this one though.
      You're basically saying no other car manufacturers should even try to compete with higher priced Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Etc Lets say auto manufacturers agreed with you, in the long run, it would be killing off innovation and competition, making those fancy brands free to charge even higher prices for the same old stuff relying on their brand name alone.
      I think a lot of these Luxury brands are being kept alive by non car people who automatically will go them without even thinking about it / doing research when they get money :P
      That's nice that Luxury car companies will give you a nice loaner / rental while they're charging you thousands of dollars to repair a windshield wiper rain sensor or some BS . I bet the Kia Stinger will be more reliable in the long run so you'll not need to worry about your loaner car so much.

    Very good comparison. Stinger is a super fast car!. I've leased cars every two years for the past 15. I have now a Kia Stinger GT1. This one has been the best after having BMW, Subarus, infinity, Acuras and Audis. Super good performance, styling and reliability. People asked me in every corner what is my car. Italian style with German dynamics. It is also a hatchback! same as Audi A7 but this one is 70K! My stinger smoked many cars for only 42k. Koreans showed with Hyundai, Genesis and Samsung and other brands than can be very reliable and competitive! My best car in 15 years.

    • @ms3er396
      @ms3er396 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's comparing them based on MSRP. Certainly a way to do it but the review focuses on so many performance variables that it doesn't make sense to me. When comparing the performance of a top trim Kia he should do the same with the Q50 but again, he chose not to in order to keep pricing the same.
      I doubt many people actually buy or finance the Redsport considering the lease deals they have on them thus again, MSRP becomes less relevant. I leased mind for 39 months with 12k yr. for $525mo with ZERO down and it's a $63k car. It will be interesting if Kia can or will do the same.
      All said value and performance wise, kudo's to Kia for coming out with this car, but time will tell if owners buy them new or if Kia will create real value vs the competition like Infinity or BMW that tend to lease way better than MBZ or Audi's.

    Great review, as always, Alex! Another good comparo review would be between the Stinger GT and the Genesis G70, since they're both riding on the same platform. I would be interested to hear your take on how two "sister" companies take the same chassis and take them in totally different directions. Their price points should be fairly close, as well. Not to mention the fact that you wouldn't get all the "badge envy" folks commenting on your videos when their precious Bimmers, Benzos, etc... get beat and trying to defend their butt-hurt feelings for spending an extra $20-40K on a car just so they can have better "dealership" experience. I figure the more reliable and less $ I spend on a routine service makes up for the "lack" of any "superior" dealer service I would be getting at a KIA dealer. JMHO, though. ;-)

However I found that buying slightly used cars is much better option. I spent around 50k for a 2 year used Lexus ISF with 32k kilometers. Couldn't be happier.

    I found the scorecard at the top of the video seemed a bit busy with the changing headings, etc. Perhaps in future comparisons, each time one of the vehicles earns a point, display a line of text for a few seconds such as "Stinger has Apple Auto: +1" and increment a counter under the vehicle's name. Then at the end you can list on screen the reasons for the scores while giving your summary.

    Why aren't you comparing the rs400?

    • @ms3er396
      @ms3er396 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      because they are focused on reviewing price vs price since Stinger buyers are value shoppers. I agree though, put it up against and AWD Redsport and let the buyers decide if they want to spend some extra bucks for the added performance.

    Though you reviewed the 3.0t Q50. The 3.7 also has run flat tires AND a spare tire. Just a side note in case someone wanted a spare.👍🏾

      The 80's called and asked for Kia to return the Stinger. That vehicle is truly horrible.

      TheSaintST1 Eh, I’m not liking the styling of the Kia. That’s just my opinion... I’d personally chose the Q50...

      bob smith Horses for courses I guess. I do like the no fuss lines of the Stinger. Q50 is perhaps a little too flamboyant for my tastes. I'd certain want to tidy up the lines in that grille though....

    As always, great informative review !~!~! A year later I still love my Q50 RS400, much prefer the looks over the Stinger. The 300/400 Hp Q50's both need the Infiniti sport exhaust and Michelin rubber, stock run flats stink. The Stinger is nice but my RS400 isn't going anywhere, both give the Germans a run for their money.

      rmyAddison Yep first thing in doing when I grab mine next year, shame infinti couldn't give us that from the factory though.

      Agree. I'm coming from a highly modded 2014 S4 and love my RS400 even in stock trim. $62k sticker and fairly loaded and it leased out for just over $500 month with no money down. 12k/yr for 39months. That's a hell of a deal for all you get in the car.

      In my opinion the stinger is ugly simple as that. Plus it’s a fuckin Kia c’mon son. Much rather have a 50 or 60 RS.

    I have had the pleasure of driving the Stinger, the 2.0 Twin Scroll Turbo and the 3.3 Twin Turbo models.. They are nice, but never drove at hwy speed. I don't like the fact of no manual, but its still a nice quality.
