The Tango still lives! Apparently Heljan are bringing some new revised versions out next year possibly with better quality control after they watched the review. Thompson 01 doesn't look that bad just needs a replacement smoke box dart (need a brass etched one).

Just purchased an LNER one of these (March 2022), as Hattons were selling them off very cheaply at only £79. Bought an LNER Q6 off them a few weeks ago for same reason. So I'm glad this scores very highly. Up until now, I realised I only had glamorous LNER express passenger locos, so needed some freight ones. These will do nicely

Having seen plenty of these in action I cannot get to grips with one in such pristine condition - they were always filthy when I saw them! I am going to get one for my display cabinet (I don't have a layout) based on your review.

I wish BR preserved one O1 for excursion and Heritage Railway operation. I would love to see an O1 in service on heritage railways, but it might never happen, but we can dream and run these models to keep the dream alive.
Interestingly, your choice of train for this loco delivered a realistic "goods clatter" that I used to hear when real goods trains consisting of open wagons ran along the Ditton intermodal line ... All we need now is for you to run it with some tanker cars that replicate the same wheel squeal as the real thing :)
Looks like a winner! Please tell us more about Hornby's "design clever period" and show us some other examples. Perhaps this could be a video title in the near future.
I have purchased one of these Thompson 01 Hornby 63663. I have probably paid a premium £129 maybe could have got one cheaper. I was told that these are no longer in production so he would not deal. It was the last one he had and he had it in a back store with the rest of out of production models. Anyway I bought it so no worries I liked what you said about it so purchased it. Happy days 👍👍👍👍

I have one of these, but I'm disappointed in it. It runs lovely backwards and able to pull a full train, but in forwards its wont pull hardly anything and crawls. Any suggestions what to look at?

Excellent review of the Hornby LNER O1 Class Sam 👍 I have one in the same BR black livery with the late crest but with different numbering and she runs beautifully as well the details are in tack. I went to the gauge master shop on the previous Sunday and I spotted a HO scale of Union Pacific Challenger Class 4-6-6-4 locomotive, now that is model you should review in the near future.
10:03 Actually, I think your running board has gotten detached at some point, as I have seen this engine, and the running board doesn't flex like that.
Hi there Sam. Love your videos. I bought that little Electrotren 0-6-0 saddle tank "Baracado". What a superb little gem. Tiny, but fine representing a small private company industrial loco. Have you ever tried Kato track. Looks amazing and just right for my new floor based layout, but I'm not sure 00 scale loco wheels will not be too deep to run on this fine scale track. Any thoughts? Keep up the good work.

Lovely loco Sam,I would be a bit concerned of the radius it could manage with four flanged driving wheels. I was amused at 21 mins when the diesels in your draw appeared to be looking on in awe at the proceedings.
It always looks as if it should be a 2-8-2 ! Looks weird IMO shifted back on the chassis, and those massive tender wheels........Never the less it’s a workhorse and, no doubt, was a mainstay of the Northern power station coal deliveries. A good solid NE Loco. Great review, thanks.
Can you do a freight train timeline with trains that pulled freight from the earliest to modern day all in one running session. (One loco representing every time period.)
The smokebox dart on the O1 and B1 were made of really flimsy plastic and broke off on quite a few of them. This is caused by the boxes being too tight around the front of the loco. The box usually breaks them off, crushed rear of the tender was another pretty common problem due to the ice box packing being too tight around certain areas. Most of the Thompson designs were rebuilds, I think only the L1 and B1 were new builds with everything else being rebuilt from something else. A lot of enthusiasts don't like Thompson because of his rebuilding policies, particularly with the P2, V2 and A1. £99 is a good price for a locomotive this size. Currently nothing beats it's RRP. Good move by Hornby, recently prices have been getting so high and this is more accessible to those getting started.
Sam great video as usual you can make even the cheapest engine look or sound like the buy of the year Hornby or Bachman should hire you as a company spokesman for their products. I still trust you opinion on trains keep up the good work.

Considering the price for an 01 on amazon is literally between 100 - 130 dollars, i'd say this model is totally worth it.

It always looks as if it should be a 2-8-2 ! Looks weird IMO shifted back on the chassis, and those massive tender wheels........Never the less it’s a workhorse and, no doubt, was a mainstay of the Northern power station coal deliveries. A good solid NE Loco. Great review, thanks.

Can you do a freight train timeline with trains that pulled freight from the earliest to modern day all in one running session. (One loco representing every time period.)

The smokebox dart on the O1 and B1 were made of really flimsy plastic and broke off on quite a few of them. This is caused by the boxes being too tight around the front of the loco. The box usually breaks them off, crushed rear of the tender was another pretty common problem due to the ice box packing being too tight around certain areas.
Most of the Thompson designs were rebuilds, I think only the L1 and B1 were new builds with everything else being rebuilt from something else. A lot of enthusiasts don't like Thompson because of his rebuilding policies, particularly with the P2, V2 and A1.
£99 is a good price for a locomotive this size. Currently nothing beats it's RRP. Good move by Hornby, recently prices have been getting so high and this is more accessible to those getting started.

Sam great video as usual you can make even the cheapest engine look or sound like the buy of the year Hornby or Bachman should hire you as a company spokesman for their products. I still trust you opinion on trains keep up the good work.
