      I would LOVE to work a deal with DynaGlo. The reason I made this video was because I couldn't find what I was looking for on TH-cam for wick replacement. Then I thought, hey, I'll just make my own...lol. I'm so happy to hear it's helping others.

    Thank you! I spent hours trying to install a new wick and watching other videos. If I hadn't found this video, I'd still be trying. The comment about the wick needing to be lubricated with kerosene in order for it to be raised and lowered saved my sanity!

      And you are EXACTLY right about the wick needed to absorb a bit of kerosene before it slides up and down that column. I (too) dang near went crazy when it initially stuck in place. Thought it had caught on something or was binding.

      @American Backroad Homestead How often are wicks to be replaced on this model? I bought it two years ago but used it tor the first time this past week. I only used it thru this cold snap. Maybe 5 days of use.

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@madmanjack6923 A wick can usually last one or two winters of constant use (like everyday 24/7) as long as you properly maintain your unit. I use mine everyday all winter long and usually change the wick at the end of the season before I store it for the spring/summer that way I know for 100% certainty, its ready to go for the next winter and I'll have no surprises. If you're only using this for emergencies, backup heat...you'll probably be able to get your wick to last you longer than 2 winters. I would suggest getting yourself a spare wick and ignitor (Dyna Glo sells them together in a package) to have on hand that way you're not scrambling to track one down when you do need it. Retail stores do tend to sell out of wicks fast during the winter months. Best times to get them at great prices are usually beginning of the heating season, September/October or end of the heating season March/April. You can find them at Lowe's, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Menards, Rural King, and even on Amazon. You'll just need to know your model number. If you have the same one I use in this video, the heater model number is WK95C8B. You'll discover that many wicks are made to fit in multiple brands/models of kerosene heaters. Make sure whatever wick you purchase is compatible for your model heater. Hope this helps!

    Just picked up 2 of these bad boys for $80 in basically brang new condition. The guy only used them twice and his wife didn't like the smell. I brought them home, wiped them down, and fired them up. They worked great!!! Be sure to always keep a spare wick on hand just for an emergency situation. BTW, great video! Wow, what a deal you snagged up! Happy for you! That guy didn’t even have them broke in yet and she was already complaining? More than likely what she was smelling was the high heat paint if they were still brand new, takes a couple burns before it goes away. Been using these heaters for years…we stock up on wicks, igniters, batteries, fuel, and additive over the summer when everything is cheaper. Absolutely the best wick replacement video on the Dyna-Glo kerosene heater I've seen. Great detail, and camera work. I have to confess, my last kerosene heater, same brand, my ignitor went out, and I was using a barbeque lighter to ignite it. I ended up giving it away, bought a new one, same model as yours. I won't give this one away now that I watched your video. I can do this now, thanks to your video. I appreciate it.

    How long can a wick last ,in hrs or gal usage if you run it at a conservative rate.

    explanation.
    Thanks!

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi 👋 It’s difficult to give you a straight answer because there are so many variables involved. A wick should be able to get you through AT LEAST one entire winter season with proper maintenance, burning only clear k1, and using it everyday. I personally like to start winter off with a fresh wick to avoid having to change them out at the most inconvenient time. I also put in a fresh set of batteries and a new igniter the same time I change out the wick. That’s just my personal preference though. Wicks are not something that needs to be changed out all the time. I know some people who have gotten their wicks to last several years with consistent use and maintenance. Hope this explanation helps you. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Take care and stay warm!

    My wife and I did the replacement. Getting the wick to stay inside the stainless steele ring is very hard. Then getting the stainless steele ring with the wick in it into the base is also difficult. It took about 30 minutes to get that done. Once this was done I was concerned because the front panel instruments were not properly aligned. Before I placed the top on, the wick raised corecctly and stayed in place. When I put the top on, it was too close to the shut off and tripped it. Then when I raised the wick, it woukld fall unless i held on to the knob. Also the ignitor moved correctly to the right and did work but when I released it, the switch did not move completly to the left. Also the two screws that attach the top to the base did not line up, extactly. I was able to get the screws in and got the wick to ignite. However, I couldn't get a good even flame. I don't know what we did wrong that caused the parts to not line up exactly. I'm going to try a dry burn and hopefully that will even out the flame. The design of these heaters which is common to most everyone should be improved. There has to be a better design so wiick can be replaced as easy as replacing a filter cartridge on a pool filter. Or at least sell them with the wick already inserted into the stainless steele ring.

      I totally understand every ounce of frustration. I had so many problems my first time changing a wick in this model heater, I invented a few curse words, lol. I will say though…every time you change a wick, you’ll learn little tricks along the way that your manual doesn’t tell you. Over time, heaters generate gunky buildup in and on them. I like to use an old (clean) toothbrush to wipe down springs and get in the nooks and crannies to clean out the dust, dirt, etc. Sometimes a little WD40 on the springs for the igniter switch and the wick knob helps keep them moving like they should. I can’t physically see your heater, so I really don’t know what the exact problem is that was causing that uneven flame. Hopefully you were able to get to the root of the problem. If you ever invent a new wick replacement strategy, let me know. I’d be down for an easier way. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. @@americanbackroadcreations Well I completely drained they fueI and did a dry burn it burned a long time and after it went out, I was able to repeat the burn around 3 times. After it finally wouldn't light again, I vacumed that area. I put everything back together and it seemed i got parts to align better. I added fuel. I raised the wick as far as the knob allowed. I lit the wick. after a few minutes I lowered the wick. I wasn't able to get a consistent 1/2 inch burn ring of fire. There were flamesabout 2 inces a part that would flucuate from 1/2 an inch to 1 inch. But the good news is there wasn't as much smoke as before. I'm satisfied I can use it in my garage. I would not use in my house. They should sell these with the wick alread in the stanless steele rings in a box. I'd be willing to pay 10 more dollars. My time is more valuable than 10 extra bucks !!!!

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Donna! I’m so glad to hear you found my videos helpful! If you’re using your heater 24/7 as primary heat, you may only get it to last a winter or 2. If it’s backup heat or light use, it might last you several winters. Sounds like you just got a new one so you should be good to go for awhile. We always keep a spare wick on hand for our heaters, just in case it needs to be changed before we planned on it. I know the wick change video is one of my longer ones, I wanted to be as thorough as possible because a lot of people find the process intimidating. Great video! How long can you usually go in between changing the wick?!

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! I posted this video about 2 years ago and just recently made an updated version. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out: th-cam.com/video/aRPjeL3viRM/w-d-xo.html Ok, now let's get that question answered. Personally, I like to change the wick just before I put the unit in storage when the season is over...every year. Most people who buy this kerosene heater are using it as a BACKUP heat source for when their central heat and air systems are down due to power outages. If you are using this unit as BACKUP and only actually using it for less than two weeks out of the whole season...then changing the wick yearly is overkill. People who use their unit as BACKUP can usually get 1-5 years out of a wick because they're not using it daily for the whole season. So why do I change mine every year? Because I'm using my heater as a PRIMARY heat source all winter long. I do not have central heat and air in my home. This means I am running this heater EVERYDAY for approximately 12 - 16 hours in the winter. Because I am so reliant on this heater, I change the wick yearly to ensure I'm never put in a position where something is going wrong at the most inconvenient time. Now there's other factors involved here too. What kind of fuel you use and how often you dry burn the wick also makes a difference in how long your wick will last. If you're using strictly clear, k1 kerosene every single time and your dry burning your wick once a week (assuming you use it everyday), then your wick is going to last a lot longer as opposed to someone who is using the red dyed kerosene and never dry burns their wick. All kerosene has sulfur in it. When sulfur is burned it creates black carbon deposits on your wick. Clear k1 kerosene is always recommended because it has the LOWEST amount of sulfur in it. Dry burning is the process we use to get those carbon deposits off the wick. Now that you have all of this information, you can see that there really is no black and white answer to your question, this is more like a guide. I encourage you to check out my kerosene heater playlist, its jam packed with all kinds of kerosene heater information. I spilt some kerosene on the tray on my initial fill-up. How fo you get that kerosene off the unit. I've tried soap and Mr. Clean and fabulosa and so far that strong odir remains. Any recommendations

      Hi 👋 my best suggestion is to unbolt the drip tray…there’s 2 bolts underneath the unit. Do this when your tank is completely empty. Soak up any remaining fuel you find on the drip tray with paper towel and discard. Then take the tray and wash in hot soapy water (a degreaser works best like Dawn). As you’ve discovered, it’s very difficult to get rid of the kerosene smell once it’s been spilled. Please make sure you are filling your unit outside so you don’t accidentally get it on the floor in your home…its a nightmare trying to clean it off of wood flooring or carpet. Once you wash it and reassemble, let it sit outside and air out a bit. I got into the habit of every time I filled the unit I would do a complete wipe down around the fuel cap and drip tray with Lysol and paper towel. That’s the best suggestion I have, hope it works for you. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Take care!

    Very good video I watched it from beginning to end. I just bought the same heater and I noticed and forgive me if I'm wrong but I think you put the front cage on the back and the back cage on the front because the front one should have the cutout so you can access the door which should be open when you ignite the wick. And one person commented they were having trouble with the adjustment knob, it was slipping like missing a gear or two. Mine is doing the same thing when trying to raise it up to the maximum level to get it lit. The adjustment knob is like a mousetrap setting you have to be really careful with it otherwise slam, the wick goes back down into emergency shut off mode. Has anyone found the solution to that yet? Very curious...

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      😂 Darn it, I almost made it a whole year without any one pointing that out. 😂 YES you caught my mistake, I did have the cage on backwards at the very end. Of course I did fix it but I didn’t go back and re-film it. As far as the adjustment knob slipping as if it’s missing gears…no one has posted the solution (that I know of). I actually own 3 of these heaters but I’ve never had that problem with any of them. I’m curious to know if that is some form of manufacturer defect maybe? 🤔 Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Excellent! I hope in your current career that you have some teaching responsibilities. You're very good! Only one question I have: when you removed the new wick from its packaging you said that slit was very important. Why is that slit important? Did I miss that?

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awww...thanks so much for the positive words! Funny you mention teaching because I'm actually a substitute teacher in my spare time and frequently work with middle and high school students. Anyway, the slit on the wick serves the purpose of making it possible to slide the wick back onto that cylinder center portion with one hand. In the video you see me doing two things at the same time...I'm holding the unit piece with one hand and then my other hand was working to slide that wick back onto the center cylinder. The wick itself is not stretchy, so having that slit allows you to easily slide the wick into place. Without the slit I'm sure we'd all be inventing new cuss words due to frustration...lol. So, when you buy a new wick, seeing that little slit at the bottom is a good thing. I do believe most wicks nowadays come standard with it. Hopefully you found this explanation helpful. We changed the wick successfully today and had your video going right beside us! The flame is flickering a bit but hopefully will calm down some by tomorrow. Keep teaching!! Middle and HS students......bless your heart! Thank goodness I'm retired! I worked in the Microbiology lab and was an instructor as well and retired right before Covid hit, thank goodness because that's where all of the testing is being done. Your attention to detail was appreciated. And I watched several other videos on the same subject, one of them straight from Dyno-Glo itself. Yours was by far the best. Thank you!!!

      @@bethgaither1214 Yay you! That is awesome! Doesn't it feel good knowing you CAN do that on your own? I can't tell you how many people have told me they've gotten rid of a kerosene heater just to turn around to buy a new one when all they needed to do right along was change their wick. The flickering flame is normal after wick installation, so don't worry. My kerosene heaters typically need about 30 minutes for that flickering to calm down and I do this process outside as seen at the end of my video. Just remember, every time you change your wick and fill your heater back up with kerosene...you need to let it sit and soak for 1 hour. This is to give your wick a chance to saturate with the kerosene for best performance and easy lighting. I'm so glad you found my video helpful. I was really disappointed in the quality of instructional videos regarding wick replacement on TH-cam, so I made my own. Many were just confusing, poor quality, or I found they were skipping steps. Oh wow, that was perfect timing for retirement. I don't think I'd want to be working in the lab either with all the "covid craziness" as I call it. So now that you're retired, what's the plan? Do you homestead? Raise animals? Travel? I'm only 37 but my biggest fear about when I retire is slowing down and doing nothing. But my husband says that'll never happen though because apparently I have too many hobbies...LOL.

      I live very much in a suburban neighborhood so not a homesteader. I follow several homesteading youtube channels though because I so admire their determination and do believe growing your own food is tastier and certainly healthier. But I only grow herbs (rosemary, parsley, basil, tarragon, chives, thyme) and peppers (jalapeños, red and green bell peppers) and flowers all in containers. Only have an indoor cat 🐈 😻 so no farm animals. I have a dollhouse built by my Dad at my request well into my adult years. If you're thinking Barbie, think again. It's not for kids to play with in other words because they might break things and I'd be very sad. Anyway my workshop is in my garage thus the need for the kerosene heater. It's my happy place. 😀 When I was 37 I never thought about retirement. The fact that you have shows you're a planner and won't allow yourself to become inactive. Stay healthy! I have 2 bad knees which keeps me from doing things I used to love to do. Anyway, keep up the good work!

    How often do you need to change the wick?

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is really a tough question to answer because honestly, it varies for everybody. It all boils down to how frequently you are using the kerosene heater. If you are using it as a back up heat source for power outages and such, then it's likely your wick will last many winters. As I type this answer, I'm on my third winter with these DynaGlo units and have only had to change the wick out once for both. We have two of these units and use them on rotation (one for during the day, one for the night). Also, keep in mind, the quality of kerosene you're using impacts the lifespan of your wick. It's always HIGHLY recommended to use only clear K1 kerosene in these units to get the best performance and longevity. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. Hi! Let's get your question answered...to my understanding, yes, wk95c8b is the same as wk95c8. WHY they drop that b and confuse everyone? No one knows. I haven't got a clue who you are calling to order the part, but I have great success ordering my wick replacements from MENARDS. Here's the direct link for the wick:

      On average I spend about $11 on just one of these wicks. Last years price was about $9.99, I'm seeing most stores selling them for $11.99 now. Amazon is usually the most expensive route this time of year, so I don't advise ordering from them unless that's the only option you have. I always tell people the best time to buy them is in the spring, summer, or fall. During the winter they're usually difficult to find in stock and they over price them because they're in demand this time of year. When ordering your wick, get one for now and if it fits your budget, buy a spare so you always have one on hand when you need it. Hopefully all of this info helps you out. This wick change video is my older one from almost 2 years ago. I have since made a new updated one. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out: th-cam.com/video/aRPjeL3viRM/w-d-xo.html

    • @americanbackroadcreations

      Hi Melvin! Great question...here's the answer. The average burn time you can get on this 1.9 gallon tank when using clear, K1 kerosene is between 10 to 12 hours. If you adjust the wick to the proper manufacturer's suggested height while using clear, K1 kerosene you can actually get closer to 14 hours on one tank. The fuel gauge says 8 hours when it's on full but I think that's if someone was using this with the flame set as high as possible and never adjusting it properly. I hope this information helps you. I’m having an issue with my unit. I installed it correctly and everything, following what you did step by step. I had to reinstall the wet wick because it wasn’t coming back up. I did it step by step again but it’s still doing the same thing. Help!!

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lauren! Read your comment in full. It sounds like there's an issue going on with the wick pins and the metal inner wick sleeve part that makes the wick go up and down when you turn the black knob on the front of the heater. Without actually seeing your heater in person, my BEST guess is that something did not align correctly when you inserted the new wick. Don't get frustrated, once you figure out what's causing it to not go up and down like it should, it's a simple fix. Those wick pins can be a pain in the neck to get properly in place. Double check that wick sleeve to make sure it's correctly in place as well. If you still have your instruction manual, I would go to page 15 and start at step 11 where the 3 pins are going into the 3 holes on the wick sleeve. While I'm sure you purchased the correct wick for this unit, I would also double check that too. If you accidentally got the wrong one...you know exactly what happened. I've even done that before. I wish I could be there to tear this apart with you and help you figure it out. Let me know how everything goes Lauren, you got this!

    • @laurenkopenhaver672
      @laurenkopenhaver672 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? When you put it together after installing the wick, it goes up the whole way. It’s when you hit the manual shutoff that it won’t raise anymore after that.

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@laurenkopenhaver672 I dug around on the internet for more info that may help, this is what I found (this is a copy and paste from a blog I read):
      1. Kerosene Heater Wick won’t Raise
      A kerosene heater wick that won’t raise means that the wick has slipped too far down into the unit hence the knob can’t adjust it. You have to pull off the knob used to adjust the wick to fix the problem. So, lift the base of the cabinet in the back to pull it off. Next, push the safety shutoff’s pendulum to activate the automatic shutoff system. Finally, reassemble the heater and turn the wick adjustment knob to raise the wick.
      A kerosene heater wick that is consistently low and refuses to rise may be a sign of several things. However, the two most common reasons are a bad wick adjustor knob and malfunctioned auto-shutoff system.
      The auto-shutoff system is designed to automatically pull the wick down to kill the flame when the heater is set to auto mode. If it malfunctions, it may keep the wick low permanently.
      Fortunately, it’s an easy problem to solve. You need to reactivate the auto-shutoff switch. Start by turning the heater off manually and wait until it’s cool enough to handle. Then, using a screwdriver, unscrew the heater’s cabinet. You should be able to lift off the cabinet once the screws are off.
      Now, locate the knob used to adjust the wick and pull it out. Lifting the cabinet by pulling at its base in the back should do this. With the wick adjuster knob out, locate the automatic shutoff system and push the pendulum within it slightly to reactivate the system.
      This simple shakeup is enough to resolve both problems listed above. If it’s an issue with the wick adjuster knob, it will resolve after you take it out and insert it back. Meanwhile, slightly pushing the automatic shutoff pendulum should resolve any issues.

    Where is a Great place to purchase the fuel?

    • @americanbackroadcreations
      @americanbackroadcreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pauletta! This is a tough question to answer because I don't know where you live. If you're here in the US, there's typically 3 options: 1) purchase from a kerosene pump at a gas station 2) buy prepackaged cans of kerosene from retail stores or 3) have a fuel company deliver it to your home. It'll take a little research and calling places in your area to see who carries it and who has the best price on it. Here in Southwest Virginia, its common to see Marathon and Shell gas stations with kerosene pumps. As for retail stores, Tractor Supply, Lowe's, and Rural King usually sell the prepackaged 5 gallon cans of kerosene. I've never dealt with a fuel delivery company for kerosene before so I honestly can't give any tips on that route. Hopefully this info helps you out. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. @29.20 while everything is apart why would you not clean the carbon buildup off the top portion of the wick stand. I watched so many do the same. Also your old wick looked fine just needed a good brushing on the charred part to break up the carbon crust and it would run 2 more yrs. Just keep breaking up the crust. Or just keep buying wicks every year. Hope that helps you
