    I'm a bleeding heart liberal. Liberal as they come. But I have to agree with Dave on this one. Alot of liberal thinking does lead to a victim mentality. Hate to say it. But it does. At the same point, there's no reason why anyone in this country should retire in poverty. If you have the ability to get out of debt and save, then its on you for no doing that.

      not true,, i am liberal who believes in personal responsibility but it does not lead to victim thinking... truth be told conservatives create policy thinking they are victims because they are rich..

      I 100% agree with the victim complex. Some of the most angry, defeatist people I've met have been liberals that are supposed to have alot in common with me... But their complaining and excuses really irritate me. That and their lack of basic knowledge of economics and finance.

    Best way to stay poor is to not believe it's possible to build wealth. If someone can vividly picture the future they want, set up a plan of action and execute against that plan at a high level over an extended period of time they will become wealthy.
    Being able to picture your future will help during the time you need to delay pleasure to build the life of your dreams.

    You can't choose what situation you grow up in but you CAN choose what you do with your life. If you don't want to continue on living that way get your hs degree, work a job then when you graduate move out of that and do something better with your life. it won't be easy but can and has been done before. There are white people , all races that have grown up in not so great circumstances. There are people that grew up privileged yet chose to do drugs and live in the non privileged ways. It's all about taking control of what choices we have control of and just doing the best we can. IMHO

    I am unapologetically progressive in most of my political thinking but Dave is right... Mostly. The fact is, there are systematic problems that make it difficult to become wealthy in this country today but it is possible. It simply takes more personal responsibility and a bit of basic financial know-how.
    The problem is nobody teaches poor people about money and the minimum wage for anyone willing to do an honest day's work has fallen below the cost of living in much of the country. So while I can acknowledge that many if not most, are capable of pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps, there are those who don't have boots.

    I will finish university in one year and i wonder why we should aim to be millionnaire? I understand living debt free and saving for future, but what happens when you reach that million? My grandfather is very old and has 2 millions in his bank account that he's not able to spend because he's to old and sick. That makes me wonder if it's so worth it to save all your life when you could spend your money a little bit more when you are young. Can somebody help me with that?

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is nothing worse than reaching the age of 65 and not having that much money in your accounts to take care of yourself.
      If you lived for another 20 years that would mean at a minimum you would need 1 million. And with that kind of money it would mean you could enjoy yourself and also have the basic ability to survive.
      If you plan early and save it will mean that when you are in your 40s or 50s you will not be under the same pressures.
      I assume you are only about 22 years old and that will mean you have the next 40 years starting right now to save and invest. Remember you may need 100k in your 30s or 40s for medical bills or helping a family member.

    Being a millionaire should not be the objective. The more money that a man has the more problems that go with it. What he should strive for is to have enough money to live the life he wants. As long as I can live comfortably and be able to do the things I want, then I have met that goal. And really, how many millionaires are there?

    Normally I like what Dave has to say, but he's demonstrably incorrect when he says that there's no systemic discrimination or bias in the economy. My masters degree in economics is full of examples of how economies are set up to disadvantage black people, women, and other oppressed groups. I think you can admire hard work and a willingness to overcome obstacles without being blind to the fact that it is easier for some people to make money than others. His politics and values don't bother me, it's his treatment of the facts to fit his agenda. We all benefit when we help those who are oppressed and understand the failings of the current system.

      Jerome Graves I know that. I watched the video. The idea that he as a white Christian male is somehow hard done by is absolutely ridiculous. By making that statement he ignores the systemic oppression that exists in our society against non-whites and women. He simply throws aside the very point that I'm making by claiming that everyone gets discriminated against. He's missed the point.

    • @gbone1812
      @gbone1812 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emma Solomano dude everyone faces some type of discrimination now as far as your economically concerned non-whites and woman typically do receive more discrimination but that doesn't mean that everyone doesn't face some level of discrimination. If you do something different or look different than everyone, you are more likely to face more discrimination. If you want to face the least amount of discrimination then just be like everyone else fit in and be cool.

  • @camxdidxthat
    @camxdidxthat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    I love Dave and his rants and he's right most of the time but he's inserting his own political views while insulting those who believe different. White privilege does exist and although it's not a determining factor in whether a person is successful or not it is an obstacle. Some people in America grow up in horrible conditions and although it's not impossible it's discouraging and for many unless you can dribble a ball, make a hit record, or find somebody to fund your education you can feel stuck. A lot of the time it's just opportunity and knowledge and for many those aren't to common.

    • @TheTurbofish
      @TheTurbofish 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Cameron Mitchell So what you're saying is majority of white people have an advantage? What about the rest of white people living in tough situations? Why are they more privileged than african americans that grew up is better conditions than them? See, its categorizing people based upon preconceptions. Its the preconceptions certain political parties suggest that the government is the only way to fix this problem. And, the government will never fix this. Therefore continuing the racial disparity. If its change you want, youre going to have to do it yourself.

    • @camxdidxthat
      @camxdidxthat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +TheTurbofish Not white skin per-say but just what it means to be a minority in America. It's a mindstate that your less than and your surroundings reflect that in a way. Some people grow up in horrible environments with rapid negative energy on a daily basis. The more you succeed, the more your belittled by your peers because their placing their own insecurities on you. There are kids that get beat up and made fun of for wanting to learn. Not to mention the living conditions, drug infested environments, poverty, and for some just opportunity. That's why I said although it's not impossible there are many obstacles that if you don't have a strong mind and a strong will to succeed you can be swallowed into your environment and instead of becoming the change you become a statistic. So Yes I think Brad from the valley has more opportunity than Deandre from Compton.

      +TheTurbofish That's why "socialist" oppertunies help bring about opportunity. Do you know how life changing more affordable education could be for some people? The way things are set up now you come out owing more that you make in 5 years. Dave deals with these scenarios daily. Every good society need some socialism. That's why we have programs like social security. That's socialism. Like I said before I love Dave but using political views to give financial advice just didn't sit well with me.

      +Cameron Mitchell I'm not saying everyone's life is equally difficult. I'm stating that Cleetus from the trailer park doesn't have it any easier that Sasha from say Chicago. I'm addressing your claim to "white privilege". Not who has a more difficult time in life, because that is an endless debate that will go in circles forever.

    It is possible but you'd have to be blind to disregard the fact that favor is disproportionally on the side of particular people. As you subtract certain factors, the odds become increasingly stacked against you. To pretend everyone is equally able is asinine

    I came to this country as an immigrant with $800 in my pocket by myself, hardly speaking any English. After working 16-18 hours a day with minimum wage and multiple jobs I saved money and went to college. I invested in myself and I’ve a 6 figure salary now. Within 20 years I became a millionaire by having frugal lifestyle. Nobody helped me to achieve this. I didn’t even know about Dave Ramsey. If I was born in this country or immigrated 10 years earlier I’d have had over $10 million by now. You don’t know how lucky you are that you are a citizen of this great nation. I’m teaching my kids and making them watch Dave’s shows. You are not a victim of anything unless you want to be. Work hard and be smart and this country will pay you back in the long term.

    Best thing I did when I was in my early 30s was to keep a very accurate record of every purchase (or bill) I paid over a one year period, using a calendar to record these costs. At the end of every day, I would ask my wife what money she spent and then record everything on the calendar . Add it all up at the end of the year. I suddenly realized that we were spending too much on convenience things: Going out to eat and buying snacks at work, rather than cooking at home more and taking more bag lunches to work. My "entertainment" expenses were more than I realized, and (looking back) I spent thousands of dollars each year on things I really did not need and never actually used! Homework assignment: Walk around your house and property, taking note of what just sits there and you never actually used or regret buying. I promise it will be an eye-opener ! That money could just have easily been used to create an "Emergency Fund" to pay unexpected bills and give me more peace of mind.

Especially now that the age to draw from 401k type accounts is 72 years old. You probably won't care as much about being a millionaire then as you do now. THAT BEING SAID, that motivates me even more to live debt free. To not be house poor, car poor etc..

      Actually, from what I've read recently, I've learned she actually earned most of it from her product lines. Perfume, handbags, shoes... plus she's paid to make appearances various places because of who she is. So she goes out to party for an hour somewhere specific and gets paid big bucks for it.
      She was expected to inherit a cool $5 million from her grandfather, and may also have a trust fund from her father, but the vast majority of her wealth was earned on her own, albeit through very non-traditional methods.

    I mostly agree. Unless a person has a severe disability, financial success and secure retirement is attainable with discipline. And yes, many can become millionaires. I like the word “grit”. I had a lot of it when I was young and it wained over time. I’m getting it back and feel the power again. The only thing I would like to add about this is that white males, like myself, often underestimate the pervasiveness of racism and bigotry even in today’s society. For those of us who believe like Dave does, I think remembering how tough some people have it in life is important. And, we should speak out to encourage and offer advice to people who struggle so they can learn to overcome the psychological obstacles. It’s much better than dismissing people who feel overwhelmed. And, it feels good to offer that little bit of help.
