- Proton goes big with their largest SUV (and largest vehicle) to date, but does the X90 stick the landing?
The X90 was launched in May 2023 as the final SUV to sit atop Proton's trio, following the X50 and X70, and based on the Geely Haoyue (or Okavango in some export markets).
It's a smart looking thing, and definitely the most grown up all-new vehicle from Proton, though there are other rivals that make a stronger first impression. Inside, this X90 Flagship is possibly the best appointed vehicle the brand has offered with a cabin that's both packed with tech, equipment, and quality materials.
Its engine is also the first from Proton to receive any form of electrification - a 48V mild-hybrid system, in this case - that should deliver some handy boosts to power and efficiency to aid the 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol.
With a starting price of RM123,800, that's certainly a lot of family-friendly practicality for the money, and the range-topping Flagship we test here (priced at RM152,800) is one of the most feature-packed in its class.
This Proton, maybe more so than its stablemates, aims squarely at customers considering something from a Japanese brand, but the SUV space is cut-throat with some very entrenched players. Can the X90 hang with the big boys?

I like the way you present it.
This Proton X90 very comfortable👍
Nice looking..but 1.5 with a big kg load factor. Wish IT was 1.8 proper hybrid. Im currently driving exora bold 12 years, though of changing but……
1.5 turbo with direct injection, and mild hybrid
go test drive it, don't just look at paper spec
The 1.5T MHEV is up to the task, in our opinion. And Geely are phasing out the 1.8T since it's an older engine design.
I was a bit sceptical too. All that changed after just a short test drive. This isn't the typical 1.5 like the one in the Avanza or Expander.
@mahendrannadarajah179 to be a proper hybrid, the 1.8L would have to be in Atkinson cycle engine. Means less power. Go take a look at Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid. If you take a look at Honda CRV, it may seem to have a better power figure, on highway X90 would have a better performance and efficiency. If Proton did create a proper hybrid with turbo charged engine, trust me, previous exora owners would never be their target customer. That is Volvo price range territory. This car is made to haul a family in comfortable manner at and affordable price. I would buy it if my trust to Proton's after sale services is ever restored. For now, no.
03:42 pening sudah 😂
Hahaha spotted!
My 11 years old reliable Mazda 8 broke down yesterday. I'm looking for a replacement.
What did you get? I’m thinking Alza or this
@@cececonnie5509 the same X90
To those whom sceptic with the 1.5 turbo engine. 1.5l turbo engine power is equivalent to 2l NA engine. To take a look at Toyota Innova 2L engine, the proton 1.5 turbo have better power figure even when compared to the newer dynamic force engine. Yes you will feel it is underpowered when fully loaded, but so does the 2L NA from toyota.
in fact this 1.5 turbo is more powerful than the velfire 2.5 L NA
Impeccable english
This is a suv with the ground clearance of a mpv
X90 is an SUV with MPV looks. The Kia Carnival is an MPV that has SUV looks. Both have zero capability off-road. These are confusing times.
