Actually it sounds like a pretty good run down to me.

I liked this movie because she really looks up to him, which is what makes the ending kinda sad.

Women from the wrong side of the tracks always seem to be telling some square dude what his problem is.

Thank you for posting this. I was a missionary most my life and taught both theology & philosophy at uiversity level. This film is so extremly good in explaining Calvinism and the problem self-validating truth. Only--couldn't reckomend that students watch the movie. The director Martin Scorssee graduated from Calvin College (now Calvin University--excellent school, but built on tulips.) He also made the film Taxi Driver based on same basic themes of the reality of evil, the role played by violence, and Reformed theology. Not many so it due to the film's title "Hardcore." I recommend people read the script which was published. I miss teaching.

Martin Scorsese grew up Catholic. He attended NYU.
Paul Schrader, the actual director of this film and the writer (also wrote the screenplay for Taxi) was brought up a strict Calvinist and attended Calvin College (a Dutch Reformed college near Grand Rapids, MI).

@AarmOZ84 You are absolutely correct. My memory isn't so good anymore. I believe the writer was also the author of Mean Streets. Both are extremely talented.

I live in Grand Rapids, where Scott is from in the movie, and there are people here who believe such nonsense. Not many but some. Basically, he's saying, "I'm going to heaven and you're going to hell and that was decided by God at the beginning". Nonsense like that is why I'm an atheist. That and I don't believe in fairytales.

People do like to hang on to their "I'm one of the chosen ones" belief systems. Been a few of those coursing their way through human religions and philosophies over time I suppose. Sounds like a nasty and ultimately unhelpful way to cope with fear and insecurity. But I can see the appeal for some folks who are either perpetually 'down on their luck' looking for an easy win (after death, usually lol), or who just love to lord it over others.

@@mkaleborn They are the "Elect" and this was decided by their god at the beginning of creation. Muslims killing Christians. Christians killing Muslims. And so it goes. I believe religion has caused untold misery to the human race. And exists only because people cannot accept that one day their story will end. But as long as they don't lord it over me, they can believe what they like. My neighbor lady is anxious to die and see her beloved dogs. Whatever give people comfort, I guess.

I probably shouldn't comment but here I go: Didn't you hear the T of TULIP, total depravity? Would you call yourself totally bad to make yourself feel better? Because of it you're unable to do anything for your own salvation. This is related to the idea of elect, it's actually a basis for people who are saved not to feel themself to be better than others, because they didn't do anything to deserve it, it's the mysterious grace of God. Typical of Calvinist denominations also is that the seperation between believers and nonbelievers is in the church not between insiders and outsiders. I don't know why I'm spending my time typing this out, but since I've gone this far, voila. O, yeah, You're from Grand Rapids? You should be proud, Gerald Ford was from it, right? Stable, pragmatic, nice man.

So you threw out 2000 years of culture, writings and philosophy because you disagree with one splinter sect? Lol
Atheism is just another system of faith. You haven't escaped anything. What you believe is what you become. How's it working put for ya?

He got Unconditional election wrong. There is no condition from which God sets upon his elect in order for them to be saved. He saved them under no condition other than his loving free grace. Also, what a wasted opportunity to share the gospel.

Don’t think Schrader was trying to evangelize.
