There was a Helio Courier on floats down the lake from us on Lake Hood. I used to drool at that plane like the turbo beaver and the Porters on floats. We just had Cessnas

That Helio is a gem. Nice to see Cranland hasn't changed much. I spent many hours there as a kid back in the 80's. Only thing missing are the UH-1s.

Didn't know any Helio's had turbines in them. What a amazing aircraft I love these things. Always read that when the slats retracted in flight there can be a loud bang, I flew in one a few years ago with my brother and he didn't know about the thump/bang of the slats as the plane converts to normal flight and it scared the shit out of him. The pilot was oh ya that was the slats retracting ha. These things can do some amazing stuff, one of my all time favorite aircraft.

This was the last Helio built, N400HE #H-22 was constructed out of the remaining inventory when Helio Aircraft LTD. closed its doors in 1984. Helio Aircraft LLC sold it to the Pima County Sheriff's to compliment another Helio in their inventory N613SD #1709 which was converted to a Rolls Royce/Allison 250/B-17C (420HP). Pima County flew it for 7 years with a 99% reliability rate and equal to any turbine helicopter in performance.

Thank you @StephenRuby this is incredible information! Are you the pilot? I was speaking with him briefly this day and he was telling me about the purchase of the aircraft from the Pima sheriff's office. I'd never seen a Helio airplane before and it was a real treat to see this one up close!

Bob Wallace and myself had spoken previously about EAA Airventure and my Helio Gathering 2017, we talked about this airplane many times, it is now awaiting FAA approval for the Rolls Royce/Allison conversion. Come to Oshkosh next year, he will be here.

Thanks again for the information! I would love to make it out to EAA unfortunately this year my vacation time is limited and I am spending a portion of it going over to the UK a few weeks before EAA. I will have to add it to my 2019 plans!

whenever i go to the fly in breakfast, i see that courier. it actually has conventional gear, opposed to a tail-dragger awesome aircraft.

Beautiful airplane! Why a county sheriff would need to spend millions of tax dollars on Helio's is anyone's guess....rofl!

They actually were using it very cheaply for a long time but decided to spend more money on helicopters. The helio was a cost saver, required less maintenance and had better up time

A sheriff is supposed to be occupied with housing prisoners. Why on earth would they need aircraft?

@@pilotjim4595 To listen to us. There is a vast program of cellular data collecting with airplane. In those airplanes, you have special equipment to listen and catch cellular data like who is phoning who, géolocalisation of each phones. To obtain those info from the cellular company you would need a search warrant. Google maps do receive raw data from cellular company, but there are not attributed to a specific phone number. Well, almost since Google do receive with google account it is if we have a google account on our phone. But anyway, for the law agency, if they want to locate phones, and who calls who, they can grab that info from the air without a warrant since the info travels freely. A bit like listening to a conversation in a restaurant if you simply are seated next to it. So many sheriff office receive a lot of money from the federal to do that job with airplanes. You can see those planes all over big cities. they are easily recognizable by the way they block their side windows when they taxi. My only concern is that they fly IFR with a special police action permit. And at night. I think that now the FAA tries to limit those special permit that flies 24 on 24 with something that is supposed to permit a special flight. It is finally a commercial operation, so IFR and night flying ask for something more sturdy. That is one of the reason the pima country had to sell theire two turbines modified helio. Insurance company did not want to insured them anymore. In case of a crash, some family member of the deceased , or injured, could had argue that it was quite a stretch to have a non-pilot in the back seat manoeuvring the electronics, outside of the safety envelope that is normally required for a commercial flight. At my home airport, we have three of those planes flying 24 on 24. When the weather is quite bad, they don't fly anymore. One day, i supposed that Cessna , or Kodiak, could offer a single turbine plane the size of a 206 that would be IFR and night commercial approved to do that job. And deiced. Old caravans would be ideal with a smaller PT6. At my home airport, we had a program to catch night moose poachers. With a 206 flying over the suspected area, they could see the lights beam of the cars going in the wood and direct game warden to them. One night, there was a crash and they all died in the plane. Family did sue the hunting department and they had to stop those flights.
