I have absolutely zero interest in starting a podcast, but I absolutely love your videos, production, and insightful tips Tom, so here I am learning something new!
@@tombuck always happy to support a channel that provides such quality information so consistently! Because of you, I have a LCT 240 Pro, Rode Podmic, and an SM7B on my desk I'm choosing between :)
Why do I always get this feeling of me and you sitting in the room, and you're talking to me, I'm just quiet and listening carefuly? Every darn video you make Tom, haha, we've met on many many occasions 😅😊
Tom, as alway, another great video. I have to say, you are my go to guy for everything involving gear, techniques and studio setups. But more than anything, you are just absolutely fun to watch, have an awesome presence and personality on camera. And so completely thorough in your explanations. So basically, you have the best channel on the planet. Well done my friend. 👍🏻💪🏻🙏
Happy to subscribe :) Thanks for this work, especially the part most miss: The Rodecaster records to a MicroSD, you don't need it plugged into a computer. So many vids and essays miss the "buy a MicroSD card" step taking it for granted!
Yep, those small details can be so frustrating. Nothing like finally getting new gear delivered only to realize you need a special card or cable and can't use it right away!
22:04 Reaper is also great daw. You can use it for as long as you like in evaluation mode and there's no limit on the features. And it only costs about $60 to pay for the personal license.
Man, I know a comment last month congratulating you about going to another Rode event. And know, we are gonna be on the Rode to Vote… okay. Massive thanks for helping figuring out if I should get the Shure SM7b! I’ve always wanted one, but I know how much of a pain it is to set it up! I got the Shure SM7b because of you! Thank you so much! I decided to go for the GoXLR with it, and it’s been amazing. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Truly. God bless, and have an awesome day! ❤✝️
It's been a pretty wild year between NAB, the B&H/Rode events, and now this! I'm not even sure how to process it all, but it's quite humbling and exciting, that's for sure. Glad you're enjoying the SM7B! And thank you so very much for the kind words. 🙏
@@tombuckyou are very blessed, Tom. Just remember that. I’m praying for you every day so that way you’ll be safe and healthy when you go on trips like that. And well, I’ll pray for you, for everything too! 😊✝️❤️
I already got everything ready but couldn't really know how to do the things in my mind the name is Walkie-Talking (dw I already got the name on every possible social media app) this video was a gift from god in my eye
Tremendous breakdown Tom! I agree with everything you said here and even learned a few new things! BTW, I don’t know if our email thread got lost on your end but I tried to bump it to you twice and I didn’t wanna come off as a bugaboo so just letting you know there is a couple new replies when you have time, I’m sure you’ve just been busy! Take it easy, buddy!
Tom, great intro video. Just out of curiosity, what are the views/listens of your TH-cam channel versus your audio only podcast? The reason I ask is because I have watched your content for years and never knew you actually had an audio only podcast...
Awesome video! I have the Sennheiser MD 46 that I learned (thanks to you) doesn't need phantom power. But I get more hissing when I increase the gain on the camera vs. when I increase the gain on the preamp. Can you recommend a device with a XLR connector & headphone output that has gain adjustment but doesn't have phantom power? Or should I just connect the mic directly into the camera? What should I do? I just wanna know if I am making the most of the mic. I previously had the IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2.
once again love your videos. question. when you record do you record to -12 and edit to -6? etc? When i record directly into my Rodecaster Duo i notice when i pop the audio into final cut pro its usually like -20. I can never get -12 out of the RCD internal recording.
It depends on the mic/eq/etc, but sometimes I do need to boost my audio levels in FCP (I record everything at about -12 on the RCP). If that happens, I usually add a "Channel EQ" audio effect and then boost the gain tabour +5dB. From there I can fine tune the regular audio track until it's right within that -6 to -12 range 👍
@@tombuck i can never get the internal RCD audio that high. next time ill try brinigin the fader way up. i keep the fader at the thick bar that rode suggests. ill keep trying. i mean i never need to use it because i record into my ZVE1 but sometimes i forget to plug my cable into my camera lol so would THEN use the backup. Thank you
Hi There! I watch most, if not all, of your videos! I'm wondering if you can answer a question for me, I want to start a podcast with two other people, the only way we can all get together is over a Discord call. If all three of us are on the same call, how would you recommend splitting out the audio for recording? Would this be a hardware or software solution? From what I can tell, the best practice is to ensure our three voices are recorded separately.
Hey Tom, can one (who is not you) buy the blue or other color headphone covers that you use on the Rode NTH 100s? I looked on reporter store and doc rock and didn't see them. Thanks, Kenny. (Oh, I also voted for you on Rode's site - good luck!)
I was thinking about some of my content changes tho, Maybe I could add this in the future and I’ll get some old content and turn ‘em into this format. 😁 (I was nervous when i thinking about it)
I've actually already got that scheduled for this week! It's definitely a nice stand, and probably the winner in terms of price. But the quality is less than the Rode overall.
15:00 If I were a betting man, I'd say you didn't use plugins and took that as an opportunity to dust off that Canon “28 Days Later” camera you've long lusted after. VHS FX can be applied with a click, but is it fulfilling?
Please answer this as I really trust your opinion: 1. Rode podmic USB/Shure MV7+ or 2. Rode Shotgun Videomic NTG or 3. Rode NT USB I shoot with iphone but will use the USB option to record sound on laptop. I have used Hollyland Mark 2, Fifine K678, budget wireless mics but never got the desired studio quality sound! There are so many options available, its really really confusing and can invest in an expensive mic only once now. Its very hard to decide. Please help and suggest 🙏 😢 Something imp to note: I keep my iPhone at a distance of approx 2.5 foot [32-35 inch] and I have a thin, soft voice hence need more bass in my voice. Please assist to make a choice.
Hey! These are all just my personal opinions, but here ya go: 1. MV7+ 2. Videomic NTG if you don't want a mic in frame 3. The Nt-USB+ is a great sounding mic, but it's the least versatile. The Videomic NTG gives you the shotgun option, but can also be used up close, and can be mounted to a camera. The MV7+ has an XLR connection if you ever want to try out an XLR interface in the future.
@@tombuck Thank you so much....will go for the NTG as I really don't want a mic up close all the time in front of my face. What the NTG can also do for me is that I can really really boom it up close at an angle (really close) because I use capcut cut-out with a fixed fake background in my videos, hence it won't be even visible! Also a shotgun provides the versatility to record videos without sitting at one place. I really appreciate that you took the time to read and reply. Thanks once again :)
1.If you start thinking it will be your main form of income, look elsewhere. 2. Podcast to complement your other business or career. 3. With interesting concept, people will listen if you are recording with smartphone. You should invest in equipment only if you see that you can build an audience.
Yep, I talk about it in the hosting section. Definitely a great way to go if you don't want a paid service! But there are limitations, especially when it comes to full RSS control and customer support.
