    Great video on worm bin moisture!! I get the occasional comment that I run my bins too dry but you’ve articulated so well what I’ve been trying to get across. Love the honesty with being too lazy to let the water off gas chlorine😂🪱🪱🪱

    I use a clean (never used for anything else) bug sprayer. Pump it up and spray away on the mist setting.

    Mine are outside, on the ground, in the shade. Excess water drains into the ground. It's just a pile I cover with three layers of hay/ plastic sheeting for insulation in time for N Idaho winters. So no sides to freeze up. First of February when I start using it for potting soil, not straight but mixed, the worms are on the top feasting on the large amount of veggies I put there in the Fall.

    I've been using an old towel to cover my bin. I keep that towel fairly moist, not soaking wet but more on the damp side. I don't use a lid, just the moist towel and so far NO worms have tried to escape unlike the first time I tried worm bins where they did the mass jail break and most died. I do find it interesting that I find many of the worms between that towel and the top of the bedding. Does that mean the bedding isn't moist enough???

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is almost assuredly because you've got condensation on the inside of your worm bin. The worms love it.

    Thanks for mentioning the food to bedding ratio… I see so many folks with moisture issues because of a lack of adequate bedding

    @Urban Worm Company, Thanks for all your helpful videos!
    I'm just confused about one thing. In a previous video you say that you want a 50 to 1 ratio of carbon to nitrogen. Here you say to use a 2 to 1 ratio of dry bedding to food waste. Can we still achieve that 50 to 1 ratio doing that? Thanks!

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a really good question Fagan. The problem is that various beddings and food wastes can have a wildly variable C:N. The 2:1 ratio is just a rule of thumb to keep your worm bin aerobic. In all likelihood, you would be less than 50:1 with that mix but you would still be safe and not end up with a smelly mess.

    How to increase worms population
    Kindly make a video on it.
    Edit: can I put unsalted pistachio shells in worm bin?

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll try to get to that Babar! I would not expect pistachio shells would break down in a worm bin, but they wouldn't be harmful though.

      @@UrbanWormCompany right and what about how to increasing population,
      Worms are very expensive here like 100$ for a pound, I've around 200 red wigglers or maybe tiger worms. I can't tell the difference. I want to increase their population.

    A wet wormbag was my issue the when I 1st started and thanks to your advise and articles my wormbag has been doing great. I always make sure to add a thicker layer of bedding if the food waste has a lot of water content. Mixing my food contend with some of my dry bedding and then adding additional bedding over has also done wonders.

      @@UrbanWormCompany It's been 3 weeks since the initial setup of my urban worm bag with just moist bedding (shredded paper and coco coir) and a little alfalfa and kashi. Today, I just fed for the first time some coffee grounds, cannabis leaves, banana peels and malted barley meal mixed heavily in dry coco coir, and then added another layer of coco coir on top to cover it all. I then lightly sprayed the top. Should I only refeed when the top coco coir layer starts to be processed into castings?

    Hi sir. Can i feed Chicken manure to earthworms?

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can, but also add a carbon-rich bedding to offset the high nitrogen in the manure. It's a very hot manure.

    I've been putting in food, then putting bedding on top to cover food. Would it be better to mix food and bedding together?

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I kind of like the idea of mixing it all together to prevent nasty, anaerobic pockets in the vermicompost.

    I use no holes in my indoor worm bin which is very large. I have no odor and no flies I use mosquito bits from time to time. I add dry material however i keep my been sealed and very moist. I do tip it from time to time and extract some water if I ever need to add excess moisture. I boil this and add it to the plants. I have massive indoor pepper plants that are like tree and produce constantly. Needing a dry bin is bull shit. In fact the worms are bit happier if it's moist.

    I heard ascorbic acid (vitaC) will neutralize the chloramines from the tap

    • @UrbanWormCompany
      @UrbanWormCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That may be true! I dug a little deeper and unless you’re talking about a lot of water, most will be off gassed in the first 24 hours

    • @zachrawlings6523
      @zachrawlings6523 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to keep digging steve- chlorine evaporation is common knowledge. CHLORAMINES require treatment to be removed. Break the bond, leaving chlorine and ammonia. Then treat for each. Fackin hotshot.
