Some wise guy in the PMO decides that the liberal government needs seats in Newfoundland. " Hey I know, we'll open up the cod fishery "

Politically-motivated or not, it's a dumb decision. Wait for the stocks to rebound or it's the same damn story as in the 90s.

What surprises me is that we are still so dependant on the natural resource sector. We don't need so many fisherman anymore, but what jobs could replace the income lost from fishing.? Could retraining in jobs that are in demand help the situation?

Closing the fisheries did not devastate Nfld . Over fishing devastated Nfld.

All fisheries must be closed across Canada.
Not should they bring them back.
How absurd. The ecological disaster far outways the benefits.

My question is are the cod fisheries on the grand bank even being protected i seen a video that showed a Chinese trauler fishing the st lawrance if the feds cant protect That then how the heck can they protect the grand banks or any of Canada’s coast on either side Of this country ?? I say let the Newfoundlander’s govern there own fisheries and pay them to monitor it as well

Yes, lets not kid ourselves. Canada has had limited resources to control and enforce the Northern Cod bad since 1992 and at best Canada can only enforce within Canada's boundaries that cover most of the Grand Banks shallow spawning area. Poaching has continued by many other nations. Fish don't recognize the Canadian border line and nothing has stopped enormous Asian and Russian Factory Trawlers from mining the waters along the border line.

They shouldn't be allowed to use trawls. Longline only.

As long as the cod fishery can sustain itself and not be over fished . why not.

Are there any fish left in the Atlantic? It's game over people.

That’s right. There are no more fish. What is wrong with people?

A 20lb female cod will spawn 250,000 eggs..
Only 5 of that 250k will get to the same size... 20lb.
Doesn't take a genius to work out industrial fishing is not sustainable..

typo=CANADA devastated the Newfoundland fisheries operations, right after Newfoundland joined Confederation(+ - 20 years)....NOW Kebek is after the rest of Canada, and Canadians are LETTING THAT HAPPEN.

Are you saying that is a recent development ? Quebec has run this country since at least the
      Pearson era.
