Hey everyone :) Here is the highly requested hair tutorial! I hope you enjoy it and find it useful. Any likes and shares are really appreciated :D
Can you make a DeviantArt account? **W**
Kirsty Partridge Art could you do a dos and donts of skin?
+enderkid games yeah I will that is a great idea! 😊
Kirsty Partridge Art Sorry, that was an accident...
Kirsty Partridge Art thank you
I would be so proud of myself doing the don't side

Exactly. Hahahha tho..
Me too, about 6 moths ago I would draw just like the don'ts
The "don't" hair still looks better than the ones I do...fml
Yer mom me too :(
Exactly
lol. sam here
Yer mom 😂😂😂I thought the same thing

I'm really good at drawing DON'Ts
I can't even do that 😂
hey people its emily if I draw the "don't" it would probably take me about 4 hours 😂
jay abordo same, but it actually easy to draw the "don't" one when i tried to do the "do" one i'm dead
Same here.
Error 404 yeah it would take 4 hours till youre too frustrated and just throw it away

I have to watch it six times .
maybe you are really smart
and need to only watch it
five times .lol
Lol, exactly!
She can also probably do that due to the products she uses. Like we probably cant do realistic hair with the piece of charcoal you stole on your dad's barbecue last monday but more possible if you are using derwent or faber castell stuff.
😂😂😂me too
DO’S
1) sketch out the form of the hair lightly to capture the motion

I think............... it must be the practice.
Ya know... you look at a lot of reference pictures... draw, draw, draw... and at one point you get used to it

Stop shaming my erasers kirsty 🤚🙄
Same haha
I'm a beginner artist and I'm 'self taught' if I can call of that so this video was really useful!! I'm going to try and use these tips next time I'm drawing hair
I am glad you found it useful :D
Kirsty Partridge Art the don't art art is great also but the do's is awesome
yay, another fellow self-teaching beginner!
Omg I also self teach myself
We’re all self taught , we draw our selves
The 'don't' side looks like every hair I've ever drawn! Every time you said "Another mistake people make" it was exactly everything I always do. I will draw a beautiful photorealistic face and then get to the hair and just panic. This was sooo helpful, thank you so much!
Did anyone else actually like the first one?😂😂😂 id be impressed if i could even do the first one XD
Lol ikr
Same
Yeah
I have been drawing for 5 years and I can draw the second pic but not THAT good .so if u keep practicing you'll get better

I love these! My graphite drawings were totally a "Don't", but with your suggestions and tips I started using charcoal, realized the AMAZING difference bc my main problem was shine. Now my drawings are way closer to a "Do"!! Thanks so much!
That moment you realize you can't even draw the *Don't* hair do.
Feel ya bro
I feel you
Yep, feel ya
yep
yah.
Steps:
1.Shade it with a light pencil
2.add a shadows with a darker pencil
3.blend it with a tissue
4.add the strokes of the hair with a more darker pencil
5.use a small eraser and add some highlights
6. darken the shadow you made
7. Blend it with a blending stump
8. Then add stroke on the shadow
And done!💜 I hope it works for you guys😊💜
who here thinks the don'ts way to draw hair looks actually kinda nice, and it's not half bad?
Edit: Wow! Thanks for 700 likes ^•^
Life is a Party
I think it's good, but there is always room to improve- if you only watch the videos on how to get to her Don'ts, what's the point in searching for more hair tutorials. 😊 My drawings look like the Don'ts, and I'm really glad she made this!
Olivia Beakman I agree
Life is a Party I think it looks really nice in a cartoony sense but not in a realistic sense. I sorta wonder if its possible for Kirsty to make an actual bad drawing though lol she's so good!

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR REALISTIC DRAWING TUTORIALS THAT ACTUALLY HELP ME FOR ETERNITY. THANK GOD YOU EXIST xx
Those awkward moment when the "beginner" hair is way beyond your skill
am i the only one who likes the dont's one too???XD
Well, it looks more abstract but the main point of this video is mainly focusing on how to draw realistic hair but I'm pretty sure you can the bad side for something more "artistic" or different.
I like that one better too but I watch the video because I thought drawing realistically will help me draw in a cartoon style but I really hate realism and how it looks and how it is ...so it hard for me to actually want to get into drawing realism
i just meant that she is sooooo talented...that even her don"t side looks beautiful...
i know its a lot harder to draw realistically so its easy to pretend you dislike the more difficult method and prefer the simplistic one.unfortunately human nature is very predictable, and we all understand you prefer the realistic hair but do not have either the patience or skill to orchestrate a proper example of realism.
its similar to the human nature of pretending something they bought cheaply is the best example of that thing in the world to somehow self justify the wrong purchase instead of admitting to buying something substandard because of lack of funds, again humans are ridiculously predictable in behaviour
the dont side is o.k but it definitely is an example of more unrealistic, cartoon hair that just about anyone who can hold a pencil can recreate.realism=difficult cartoonish=simple and fast=easy
YES,YES YOU ARE
That moment when even her "Dont drawing" is better than my masterpiece
😂😂
Nice! May I suggest a future video, or videos, of some slowed down pencil/marker stroke techniques and the kinds of effects different strokes create? You mentioned here the differences kind of a scribble where you go back and forth without lifting the pencil, and the proper way of single line strokes where you lift the pencil. I just think it would be cool to see that type of thing slowed down and elaborated on - perhaps with hair and fur and skin maybe. I know you've done those, but I guess I love watching your videos so a half hour of average speed or slow pencil stroke tutorials would be sweet to me!
That is a great idea, I will definitely add it to my list :)
**listens to the "dont" part**
Me: she just listed everything i thought ive been doing right and it was wrong..

This video literally saved my life, as soon as i saw it i went to Michael's and purchased a couple new pencils anf some blending stumps, its not like i have an obsession to drawing, i just like to express my feelings into my drawings and it takes my mind of off all the bad things around me, its like im in a trance, It's an amazing feeling and now im becoming more satisfied with my drawings because they have came a long way.
Legend has it, the hair in the drawing looked more realistic than the actual hair of the reference photo.

Hi Kirsty, can I just say thank you so much for all the hard work, love and dedication you put into these videos. I'm relatively new to drawing, I've always been SO bad (only marginally better after 2 years lol) I recently found your channel and have learnt SO much. Drawing really helps my mental health, and your videos are so clear and concise and give me something to focus on. Thank you! 💕
I like how you show more advanced beginners rather then the usual videos with the "pressing too hard, no shading, spike bangs" beginners. 😩 Those videos are so infuriating sometimes... I mean, they're sometimes right, but they're EVERYWHERE.
+Olivia Beakman thank you! I do like showing more advanced beginner mistakes because it can be hard to identify why your drawing isn't looking as realistic as it could be. Most beginners know the obvious mistakes but these are more subtle mistakes 😀😊💕

Amen to that 👏👏
And I thought I was a decent artist from listening to some of my friends. There are amazing artists on TH-cam that definitely blow me away on my best day. I appreciate her sharing her talent and teachings with us. I'm currently learning through Kirsty's instructions. If I can obtain at least 30 to 40% of her abilities and apply them to my drawings, I'll learn to be a decent photo realistic drawer. Again, Kirsty your work is amazing!
The Don'ts you make are still like A billion Times better than mine😂😂😂
oh damn!!! clean new lessons
think imma hit the DON'TS first then DO's.
great work Kirsty
the "don't" was already better than I could draw.
I don’t really like giving feedback or likening any TH-camrs veds... But this channel is awesome and I really learned “ALOT”of stuff in here , you are the best TH-camr of art teaching that I have ever visited lately. And I hope that you continue doing stuff like that in the future
Draw curly hair. I think the struggle would be real

FierroSchuyler ._. I'm trying to draw Harry styles....his curly hair would take hours to draw😐😐😐😐
Oh yeah. Definitely.
A family member of mine is paying me to draw her realistically, but here is the problem, she has extremely curly grey hair...
I really appreciate the fact that you took the time and effort to purposefully make a bad drawing to explain to your viewers before explaining the proper technique. Really awesome video! Thank you!
HmmmmHHHmmmH
I think it's funny that most of the people commenting "the don't looks like crap" don't seem to realize that there are different art styles?
Like, yo, she's explaining how to make it realistic, not good. Good is relative, and any art style can be good, and not only that but the drawing before hand was actually rather nice in a cartooning and/or more anime type approach
like ya'll chiLL
Like ur name
Unironic Dab who really commented that way? Almost everyone commented that her don't drawing is better than theirs.
Akshayan Eswaran maybe when the video was first posted those were the comments
This helped me SO MUCH! And I hardly followed the tutorial, I just used smaller strokes and didn’t go back and forth, and payed more attention to shadows and highlights
Yay, I love hair videos! Thank you so much

Stunning! I absolutely LOVE this video! Hair has always been a mystery for me and this really helps. I thought your 'don'ts' were great, but your 'dos' are just staggering. You have a great accent and speaking voice too.
When you're too good in drawing that you try to mess up but still end up drawing nicely.
seriously beautiful
Me: ok I can do this
Two seconds later: WAIT THAT WAS DON’T I THOUGHT IT WAS DO
Two minutes later: Ok so I need to go buy four different pencils...?
No need to buy different pencil I use only normal pencil to shade and it turns really beautiful but I only don't know to do the design of hair so I do flat hair for all my drawing :)
Same here! 😂😂

Yup now that I know more about realism I have realized that 😂
i just started to draw a realis drawing using pencils, and so i search for tips on youtube, and voila, i got your channel which is really helpful, thanks for sharing this magnificent tips :)

Hi! I watched one of your do's and don'ts a couple of weeks ago and tried it on one of my graphite pencil commissions. The result was miles better than the other commissions I've ever done. Thank you so much for making it super easy to understand!
I was too focused on the don’t-s and thought it was the actual tutorial 😭😂
I am a beginner in terms of drawing... I am trying to bring a realistic touch in my drawings... And your videos are of great help...
how would you color the hair?
Katherin Osorio you can use coloring pencils instead of pencils
Katherin Osorio start over and use color pencils
Katherin Osorio Instead of with pencil, Do this with the colour/colours you want to use. Using the darker tones/colours as the darker bits. And the lighter bits with the lighter tones.
Art Do's and don't are the reason I signed in TH-cam. Great art❤
Tfw the "Don'ts" hair is x40 better than how you draw it -__-
I'd much rather prefer the Don'ts side since it looks much more abstract and different.
I know the "Do's" is fantastic, it just seems like Kristy can't even draw badly even if she wanted to considering that the "Don'ts" also looks good .-.
The key is this is how to draw *Realistic* hair, in which case the "Do's" is definitely better. You're free to enjoy the other hair more, though! ^_^
Thank you so much.....very helpful!!!! I was close by your tutorial has helped so much.. slow down and dont press so hard. I love how you slowly build the hair and contrast. very good.

I have a question please respond. How do you know what angle to put the strands of hair and where to stop?
I guess it's practice, as with pretty much everything. Take Pictures of hair, look at it how the hair flows and then try to imitate the drawing.
After a time, you'll get a grip on how hair usually grows and in which direction it goes etc.

This video is useful! I love how you explained the don't for people who are more advanced, instead of JUST starting out. I haven't been able to find any useful videos that do that, so this was very helpful! My mistake was that I didn't add highlights, I only added shadows and once I was done I would roughly blended it all together. But this helped me improve immensely in just a few minutes, thank you!

Greatly appreciate the time you have put in to assist others. Can't thank you enough. SO SO Helpful
In my opinion in art there are no don'ts and do's. Everyone has their own style so there are no wrong ways to draw or paint.
I think they meant in realistic art. Realism is pretty strict. The do's look a lot more realistic than the don'ts
ByShawny She already said in this vid, this tutorial is for realistic hair and there many tutorials here on TH-cam for realistic and for your art style
but I think realistic art is very important
