    I’ve wanted a Sheraton like this since I saw them in the Epiphone catalog as a teenager in 1964/65. I like the natural finish, but in the ‘60s they made some in cherry-those look great too. The mini-humbuckers sound good-I’d like to hear them through something like a Fender Twin Reverb for a little more treble and a bit less midrange. One of my favorite guitarists used Sheratons for years-the late great Leon Rhodes, who played with Ernest Tubb for ages. Drake Levin from Paul Revere & The Raiders used one too.

    The longer overall string length on the bottom strings would make them have more tension than a regular bridge stop tail set up that should give it a tighter cleaner low end. I think this is one of Epiphone’s best guitars.

    I had an Epiphone Valensi Riviera for many years. It had the Frequensator tail piece as well. I never once ran into issues with strings being too short when changing them. No reason for concern. That’s a guitar I wish I never let go.

      The Epiphone Nick Riviera was probably the best Riviera model ever made in Korea or in China. Personally, l choose a Jorma Kaukonen. But, until recently when you bought a Sheraton, a Casino or a Riviera model, the model was sold, with a suitcase with Epiphone monogram.

    With every guitar I bought that had the frequensator tailpiece, the first thing I did was to remove and bin the frequensator, and fit a Bigsby in place of it.

      @@eddienebula6084 . . No never. All you need to do is stretch the strings in nicely when changing them and you won't have any problems either.
      Billy Gibbons? He uses 7-gauge strings, for goodness sake! Of course he'd have problems getting a Bigsby to function! See Joe Bonamassa's guitars. Plenty of them have Bigsbys. Like me, He knows how to handle 'em.

    That's a beautiful guitar! I own a Riviera with mini humbuckers and it sounds very similar. The frequensator tailpiece kind of adds something different to the guitar and I've never seen it as an issue. Yes, restringing can be a little bit if a pain, but a piece of masking tape works wonders during restringing. I'm not really sure how this guitar differs from the Riviera, aside from more bling, but it sure sounds good on your demo.

  • @KozmykJ
    @KozmykJ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Interesting developments.
    Here in Britain and Europe currently, the Sheraton Frequensator has Epiphone ProBucker Mini-Humbuckers, the Riviera has Epiphone PRO Mini Humbuckers.
    I've just sent two Rivieras back with broken headstock/necks straight out of the box. 😥
    I'm hoping that the Sheraton I have coming will be a bit tougher with its shorter headstock.
    I had a choice of two weights, 8lbs 12oz, and 8lbs 1oz., I chose the lighter.
    I did some digging to find out quite what the Frequensator Tailpiece was meant to achieve.
    There were a lot of opinions, some almost made sense .... 🙄
    Eventually on The Gear Page I found a logical answer.
    The longer string run on the low strings gives more 'string' to be stretched when bent or fretted hard.
    While this makes them slightly easier to bend but requiring bending further to make it to the target note, it Also means that accidental bending or hard strumming, raises the pitch less and therefore the tuning is more stable.
    Anyone who has hit a heavy chord on a Les Paul or an SG hard will recall how the low E and A pitch goes 'Off' on the attack then settles back.

    • @KozmykJ
      @KozmykJ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bad news on the Sheraton.
      Although the shorter (normal length) headstock did Not break the neck on this model, the purfling on the fingerboard meant that the factory cut the fret tangs too short, leaving the fret ends to rise over an E string's width.
      Knife-sharp raised fret ends all the way up the neck !!!
      Third Epiphone returned in two weeks. 😢

    Thanx for showing this new Epiphone! How is the laminated top made? Is it a 5-ply or 3-ply-laminated top? I own some Guild Archtops, they all have a 3-ply-laminated top, of course this is better for resonance. An older Epiphone Zephyr Regent got a 5-ply-laminated top, there is no sustain block, but the resonance is not great. I´ve seen that this Epi has this small (spruce) bars on the sustain block like the Gibson models, very good. The Guild Starfire IV has no such bars on the sustain block, but...a 3-ply top. So...what´s better for resonance....a big question...

    Frequensator is probably wasted on the stock (too light) strings. When that feature was introduced, by the original NY Epiphone company on their acoustic archtops like the Emperor, 14-58 string (some with a wound B string) sets were common. And when the popular electrics of the postwar period were introduced, including the ES-335 and its derivatives, they were shipped with 12-53 flatwounds. All of them will intonate better and hold tuning better if setup as originally intended. And the Frequensator is designed for just that setup.

    Great review. I just really wish Epiphone would put proper rosewood fretboards on these guitars instead of just "laurel". The fretboard is one of the only things you can't upgrade on a guitar so if you get one of these you're stuck with a historically inaccurate fretboard. Pre-2017 every guitar brand was putting real rosewood fretboards on all levels of guitar, so to charge this much money and not even go with rosewood feels ridiculous.

    • @gregputman
      @gregputman ปีที่แล้ว

      Some species of Rosewood are endangered. CITES serves a purpose. You need to get over it man. Things change over time. I am generally a traditionalist. That is why I bought one of these (besides the fact that it sounds badass). The laurel fretboard is just fine. Someday, it will be considered "traditional".

    • @James0113-c5e
      @James0113-c5e ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gregputman yeah I get what you're saying Greg, but I think it's all the rosewood furniture that was being made that put rosewood on the endangered list that's why musical instruments are now excepted from the CITES rosewood regulations. The guy who owns Taylor did a big video on how there's massive deforestation problems with ebony too, but it doesn't stop Epiphone from using it on the Lucille models, Les Paul Customs and even those cheap Modern Les Pauls. I'm all for preserving the environment, but Epiphone contribute hugely to the problem of ebony deforestation and then put cheap laurel boards on other guitars and try to make out like it's because they care about the environment. That said, I've got a laurel board on my Epi John Lee Hooker sig because sometimes you've just got to have that guitar right!

    • @VN9001
      @VN9001 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Lots of manufacturers are using rosewood and it's been removed from the CITES list for guitars. Ebony is also an option that Epiphone (and others) have been using on many of its mid level guitars. Indian Laurel is now just a cash grab for the manufacturers to increase profit. Indian Laurel just looks cheap ('cause it is cheap). There is no "environmental" justification here anymore.@@gregputman
