The thing that got to me most was the ending scene, when Richard made fun of his brother Anthony. He called him a "fuckin nana" and "an embarrassment to me" And at that very moment the whole film made sense of its true meaning. A man wracked with guilt about how he felt about his young brother, and the fact, despite his true feelings, he should of been there for him.
It truly was a heartbreaking moment. He couldn't live with that guilt, so was hell bent on the revenge, and his own demise.
Such a powerful and sad film.
They'll blow the dust off this film in 50 years time and still say it's genius.

I’m glad you came to that conclusion because I’ve seen a few people try to say it was Richard “Expressing his murderous tendencies with revenge and using it as an excuse to murder” - which is totally off. He even admits at the end that “he’s the monster” so I don’t know how these people came to that conclusion. He wouldn’t have even let the last bloke kill him if he had just wanted to express murderous tendencies.
This is the one of the messages I got from the film too: that he was wracked with guilt over how he should’ve done more and how he viewed/treated his brother was wrong, an he’s the one paying the ultimate price. He thought killing them would make him better, but instead it just made him just as bad.

Obviously Paddy Considine is brilliant but I don't think Toby Kebbell gets enough praise. This was the first I'd seen of him and I thought he actually had special needs. Completely convincing and empathetic at the same time.

I think weve all encountered or hung round with these nasty mean spirited lads be it on your estate or at school or in the pub and heard about some really awful things, atrocities really that have happened in our communities and have gone unpunished and thats what this film protrays so excellantly. The characters are perfect and if your from a working class background then they are just instantly recognisable. and considine is magnificent as the protagonist. CLASSIC CINEMA

There's a scene where Richard and Anthony are happily reminiscing about the day he came and played football at Anthony's school, and Anthony says about his schoolmates, "they all wanted to hold your hand didn't they?" Then his tone and expression darkens and he says, "I didn't." To which Richard agrees, and seems negatively affected also, and then Anthony adds, "didn't need to, did I?"
Stupidly, and despite the admissions Richard makes at the end if the film, I always took as perhaps the people in Anthony's life babying him due to his disability (if that's the correct term?) And Anthony not wanting to hold his big brothers hand at school because he wanted to prove he was a big boy. Looking back I don't think this lines up with anything in the film. I can't remember if it was a TH-cam comment, or something said in an interview, or where I got what I now think is the correct take which should have been obvious. Whoever it was I got it from said that Anthony was probably always trying to hold Richard's hand, and and that embarrased and angered Richard, and he would tell Anthony he didn't need to hold his hand, so when Anthony says "I didn't need to did I?" He's just parroting what Richard would tell him, almost for his approval, and that's why that conversation left Richard distant and deep in thought because he was remembering and regretting how he spoke to Anthony, which I think makes a lot more sense and lines up with the things Richard says towards the end of the film.
One of my favourite films ever made.
