Jo Hig Meade is NO CALLAS. Callas had a voice that maybe was not so pretty but was always on pitch, not wobbly... and well.. she was an assoluta. Meade shouldn’t be singing bel canto.. the wobblyness my god. It’s painful.
It truly is an abomination. Similar in size and sound to an ambulance. I cannot believe this is the quality of singer that you find at the Met these days. No wonder younger people such as myself truly detest opera. This is the sort of vocal malfeasance that most attribute to opera. I thank God every day the vocal triumphs of Joan Sutherland are immortalized by her many recordings. Were it not for singers like Sutherland, I would never have become a fan of opera. 40 years ago, Angela Meade would not even be fit to be an understudy. But she is a Prima Donna today. Just let that sink in.
She wouldn't even get work as a comprimario a few decades earlier. I grew up listening to the broadcasts in the glorious 60's. Every week was Tebaldi or Price or Nilsson or Sutherland and Corelli or Tucker or.Bergonzi. Now I usually have to turn the radio off after ten minutes. So sad!
The problem is that she does not fit this rle at all. It is not just that these days we lack excellent singers, that would make it seem like she is the best we could find for Norma. If you listen to Yoncheva or Rebeka singing this very same role, it becomes clear that Meade simply is not a good Norma and not the best option for this role in an important opera theater, though she could be much better in other roles.
I also agree with the respondent here. I have been attending opera since the early 60'Ts and the great problem that seems to have emerged in the last couple of decades is that conductors seem now to push singers into roles that they should not sing at all [Meade is not a "Norma" although she is making a valiant effort; Levine pushing the post-surgery Voight, possibly the greatest Strauss soprano of the second half of the 20th century into Brunnhilde; Gergiev taking a very fine basic voice in Netrebko and trying to create the impossible [A new Callas]; or directors failing totally to understand the physical demands of singing and pushing singers to do things that are antithetical to great singing. There is also the problem of mediocre listeners who accept Broadway voices in Verdi and Wagner. We need audiences who do not applaud [I do not advocate booing but silence after a poorly done aria or scena conveys the appropriate message]. Singers must also stop trying to sing everything early in their careers. People seem to forget that Sutherland made her debut at Covent Garden nine years before her first Lucia; Sills was a reliable soprano without much acclaim for 10 years before the Cleopatra in Julius Caesar, Flagstad was 34 before she took on the great Wagner roles internationally. There are still great voices out there but there no longer seems to be a system which supports them as they develop and mature.
I think she fits later Romantic roles (later Verdi, Massenet, and so on) way better than Italian bel canto or baroque. Her voice is too wavery, heavy and heterogeneous to sound effortless and seamless in a role that requires these qualities more than anything else. She should consider sticking to her excellent Alice Ford, at most Luisa Miller and Amelia, not much earlier or more higher coloratura than that.
I had the same impression at first listening, about the syrupy thickness of the voice and the wide vibrato. But on second listening, the rich expressive beauty works form me.
@@walkercatenaccio Hoo boy, are you spot on about the wide vibrato. I listened at 0.25x speed, and it varies from a major third to a perfect fifth, but it is never narrower than a major third. That is absolutely unacceptable, unmusical in the extreme.
'Norma' is one of the most demanding operas for a soprano to sing. The quality of Bel Canto is a sure definition to sing this wonderful Bellini opera. Fiata is just not here within her technique. The clean musical line does not hold. Her voice is powerful and perhaps being too eager to stretch repertoire too soon instead of fully developing the 'cover' with a solid support and control of singing 'on the breath?' We old persons have heard many singers from last 50 years. Caballe was quite the legendary of Bel Canto. She never felt ready to sing 'Norma.' Furyher, she didn't even know she could sing Bel Canto until Lucretia. What a gift of sound and command of voice FIRST. When she did sing 'Norma,' she knocked many a performances out of the park. I'm very interested to care of the voice. Tessitura is time decision as voice matures? Best to her.
The entire instrument has been placed into a squeeze mask technique and her throat is not engaged . This an enormous amount of air is flying through and the chords just waver even more . Throat engagement was seen as dangerous technique in the 1990’s by in the main American teachers. What we have now is hollow and or nasal whinnying and throats which are frankly obnoxious to listen to . Meade well , it’s just warbled in everything she does . It has never been fixed nor dealt with . It’s a huge denial of her entire career .

That this inconsequential singer passes for "star" at the Met today stands as an indictment against the sorry state of singing and of the artform in general and should qualify as scandal, second only to the Levine and Gelb self-inflicted one going through the motions now.
The standard for bel canto for the last 35 to 45 years was set by Callas, Sutherland, Caballe , Horne, and Sills. I’m a Rodvanofsky but, even though she was better than this, she also had some difficulty with some of the role BUT, the tone was always beautiful, unless she intended otherwise. Meade has a world class voice and when she began singing Seditiose Voci, I thought she was gonna be fine, but I was disappointed with most of the performance.
Just heard Angela Meade last night in Montreal in Verdi’s Requiem. Very sad and bad singing and to your point, she is not so much to blame as the people who hire and promote such low quality of supposedly top notch singers.
This is a terrible shame as already her voice has become harsh and ugly with way too much vibrato above the stave between a G and a B. Interestingly the very top is not so wobbly. She won't last at this rate. Someone needs to have a word and she needs to salvage what was a promising dramatic soprano voice. She is taking on way too many new heavy roles too soon in my view. Also, whilst for me it is not too much of an issue, the weight thing is going to be a problem if she wants to sing decent roles outside US.
Simon Bostic what do you mean too early or too soon? She’s forty, 40, it’s not too soon to be singing these roles. She just has a poor technique which doesn’t convey her voice properly. She has a beautiful instrument but she isn’t using it right or well. Her weight is really a non issue compared to the fluttery mess which is her technique. As far as someone telling her that she needs to focus elsewhere or that she isn’t Joan Sutherland. Good luck from what I know form a friend that spends a lot of time with her she is a DiVA in every derogatory sense of the word. And she has a horrible attitude towards people who think she isn’t the next Adelina Patti.
