I think the restraint of Bigger than the Whole Sky makes it so much more ethereal. It's a song to cry over bc of a personal loss. It doesn't need to be a bop. It doesn't need to be catchy.

I agree. I personally feel like the lyrics are about a miscarriage or the loss of a child, but I think they are probably vague enough that we project our own personal tragedies onto it. Wonderfully, wistfully, sad song.

The Great War is about how she was used to being in dramatic (and sometimes toxic) relationships, and then she met Joe and he was actually treating her the way she deserves. But she didn't know how to accept it, she was creating big fights and trying to self-destruct. (she references throwing him in jail for something he didn't do in in the song Afterglow). so she is calling this turbulent time when she was "blowing up" her relationship "the Great War" ..and how he refused to let her do it.

As someone who also hears all the lyrics on the first listen, I understand Alex’s frustration with Blake about not having any idea what she’s singing about. 😂 I also think you two are a great pair for videos like this because we can get both aspects of someone who dives deep into the production and someone who dives deep into the lyrics. We get a more cohesive understanding of where the artist could be coming from.

Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve is my favorite song on the entire album…it destroys me every time and I love that her voice when she sings the girlhood line actually sounds purposefully youthful like it did at 19 (and that she made it track 19 & released it at same age he was at the time…much like Demi did with 29). High Infidelity is about Calvin Harris. April 29th was days before Met Gala wherein Taylor met Joe. The dancing around can be interpreted by She's dancing with Tom Hiddleston literally in Met Gala or she's dancing around with her relationship with Calvin. (Getaway Car is parallel to this song). And the lyrics "Put on your records and regret me" is because Calvin is a DJ and Hi-Fi (Hi Fidelity) but Taylor used Infidelity instead just because she's a genius songwriter and storyteller. Long story short this song gives a glimpse of what she truly felt during her relationship with Calvin Harris and how he hurt and take Taylor for granted.
PS: love your reaction videos and how you are a Swiftie too!! Super cool 😍💖🙌

The song she wrote This Is What You Came For was also released on 4/29/16. We know her involvement was a secret for a while, and he denied working with her or wanting to work with her. Put on your headphones and regret me is def DJ imagery. I wonder how much is her PO’ed about the song and how much is her cheating. I feel like there was speculation he used her to try to get Grammy recognition.

I think that Bigger than The Whole Sky was never meant to be "legendary". I feel like it was Taylor having a cathartic moment with her piano mourning a loss. Not all songs are written to win awards or be played on the radio. Some songs are written to voice something important in the person's life that they feel might make a listener who is going through the same thing a little less lonely.

The Great War is 1) an Aaron Dessner co-write and co-produce (not Jack) so that is why it has the folklore/evermore feel; and 2) it is about her first huge fight with Joe. She has admitted she gets jealous (or she did at the beginning) and she was accusing him of possibly cheating or seeing someone else, but Joe wouldn’t play and stayed calm and reached out and held his stand. They survived it (but it’s sounds like it was close).

They met in New York at the Met Gala (which is held in NYC annually) - BUT, they spent a lot of time together early on in their relationship, in Paris (which is where Taylor was planning to kick off the Lover tour before the Pandemic hit, I believe).

Actually, Aaron Dessner was the co-writer and co-producer on High Infidelity (which is why it has a similar tone to folklore). High Infidelity is believed to be about Calvin Harris (notice all the music/club/DJ references including the song name, a play off High Fidelity (HiFi). And the story is he didn’t give her a lot of time or attention, and didn’t even want to accompany her to award shows etc. And then his comment about never collaborating with her in a tone like she isn’t worthy of doing that with after he had dropped the song she co-wrote. Educated guess and makes a lot of sense.

The great war is about a big fight Taylor and Joe had (she also references this in afterglow & )´, like the dark night of their relationship, where all Taylors previous trauma from earlier relationships almost made her lose Joe, like she says in the lyrics "maybe it´s the past that´s talking screaming from the crypt. Telling me to punish you for things you never did." And in the end of the song she basically is saying that because they survived this "war" of their relationship, she now knows she can trust him and will always be his. If you pay closer attention to the lyrics its very clear that the song is about her and Joe(not S.B,S.B or K.W)

1:02:16 Mean came out in 2010, Taylor dated John Mayer from 2009 to 2010 so her mentioning that she was 19 and the melodic similarity with Mean could be a pin point to the time in which what the song tells happened.

I love how she managed to tie 29 April in High Infidelity (date of release of 'This is what you came for') and Calvin Harris (, the Met gala, how she was dancing (literally and metaphorically) around the bad relationship and with Tom Hiddleston in the MET Gala (in the Getaway Car), but also on that same night she met also for 1st time Joe "Do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life?". Beautiful masterpiece. She is a genius.

High Infidelity: April 29th is the day of the Met Gala in 2016. And where Taylor was seen dancing with Tom Hiddleston that night. Which made people suggest that her relationship with Calvin Harris was over. So this song is about Taylor leaving Calvin at the Met Gala and being in a new relationship with Tom. Also in the lyric when she says “Do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life?” Is about Joe and how he saved her from herself and what the media wants her to be.

High infidelity is about Calvin Harris. He released “This is What You Came For” on April 29th, which Taylor was credited as a song writer on under a pseudonym (Nils Sjoberg). That same she was seen shopping in New York City to prepare for the Met Gala that she was co-hosting. At the Met Gala she was seen dancing with Tom Hiddleston and they started dating a couple months later.

I love the bonus tracks, but I think I still love You're On Your Own Kid the best, followed very closely by Dear Reader, Vigilante Shit, Bigger than the Whole Sky, then Mastermind I think? Then High Infidelity and then Paris? Or Would've Been Could've Been Should've Been? Its so hard to pick my absolute favorites. I love them all, I could honestly just listen to the whole album all the time, and there aren't many albums I can say that about. As far as dissecting Taylor's lyrics, I'm here for it! Honestly any Taylor content you want to put out I'm here for!

Taylor references records and headphones in high infidelity a few times and it’s giving Calvin Harris. Feel like this goes into bejeweled with him not appreciating her. Hence “ there are many ways to kill the one you love, the slowest is not loving them enough.” And she was dancing around at the met with Tom 😒 also April 29th 2016 was the day Calvin said he and Taylor would never collaborate despite them having written this is what we came for together. They broke up right after.

Through the TTPD-Matty lens and the Midnights-was-the-Joe-breakup-album lens, Paris is very reminiscent of Guilty as Sin? as if she was already emotionally detached from Joe and she was feeling cheerful and giddy about M and doesn’t even care about any gossip anymore because she’s floating up in the clouds with new love butterflies.

    • @lka9900

Im sure this has been said by multiple people already but "High Infidelity" is about Calvin and Tom. April 29th was 3 days before Coachella when she was seen dancing with Tom Hiddleston and so people assumed her relationship with Calvin Harris had ended.
All I can think is that writing Midnights managed to make a miracle happen. She actually wrote a song about Calvin lol

You coming back to Bigger Than The Whole Sky holding a cat made me so happy for you because that song shatters me. Sometimes we just need a therapy pet to get through that ride. I totally see what Blake means with if we heard it with that bit doubled that we would think it’s perfection just as we do hearing this as it is, but I think that seeing as though soooo many people hear this song and want nothing more from it, makes it perfect as is. The change wouldn’t have affected it. It doesn’t need to be catchy or hit an octave, it’s just a feel your feelings song 💙 I think you were spot on with these 3 am tracks being her catharsis bit and less of those golden radio play tracks.

About Paris - it's amazing to me how Taylor manages to catch such a basic but absolutely core experience of any person in their 20s/30s visiting Paris: drinking champagne/any cheap French wine in an alley or just in front of the Tour Effeil. I don't know how she can do it while also being one of the most famous multi-millioners in the world.
To compare, when Beyonce sang about quitting a day job in Break My Soul, people couldn't relate. But Taylor does it so naturally and beautifully that you'd think that she's one of us trying to go to Paris for a weekend on a 10£ budget.
