The only people that DONT GO BY the lpu ranking sysyem are locksmiths, and leople that ARENT into LOCK SPORT. LOCK SPORT os totally different than what locksmiths, and people that service locks for their profession. I do SOME lock work for the business that i own, but it was out of the love of locksport. I had a lock sport hobby BEFORE i started offering lock services for my business. Im pretty sure most of us in the true locksport community know what the LPUBelts system is. Love the video tho, helps me alot!!!!

What kind of business do you own to add lock services to it? I’m just curious if you’re not a locksmith

as a member of at least one group you admin for, thank you for keeping locksport fun and accessible for everyone. ive found great joy in trying to give advice to a blind member of one these groups you admin for, because locksport should be for anyone and everyone. Gatekeeping in any hobby is embarrassing and sad, but especially in locksport

Great summary and overview! You did the right thing removing this person from the group! The belt ranking system is such a unique system from the community for the community, I am very happy that it exists. I cannot encourage people enough to participate in it. Even though you will need to record videos at some point and build a challenge lock, which some people will feel uncomfortable with, it is soooo rewarding progressing through the belts and being thereby a part of the community. All the best to you 👋

Really good , video , I'm 70 years old , not ranked , but use the lpu belts as a guide , what locks to buy & practice , right now I'm progressively pinning American 1100 , padlock 90a , abus 72/40 . I think the lpu belt system is fantastic, I can't imagine all the hard work the people put in to it, I really thank them , it makes lock picking fun & challenging , good job explaining the levels , thank you , moe

There always has to be one.... to me, the belt system makes locksport more fun. Yea, we get that in the real world the belts don't matter, but that's not what the belt system is for. It is to make this sport more fun and engaging. I love it and the locksport community.
Sandman this is a great video, very informative and a nice indepth look at the lpu belt system. Thank you for all the amazing advice and knowledge.

Heh. Not remembering specific details isn't important, but the encouraging attitude you share with the community is!
When I first went looking for information, I came across a lot of LPL and BB videos first. All good stuff, but it was your videos on the various pick manufacturers that I found the most useful. You hit all the data points I was looking for to make an informed decision, and that was no small thing for helping me get into this wonderful hobby with minimal frustration. So if I haven't said it before, thank you!
As far as not being able to comment on higher belts, it's fair that someone wouldn't want to comment until they had actual experience with them. I do think that, if you have a head for it, it's possible to extrapolate based on what you've experienced so far and the data available for the locks. My exposure is limited to standard pin-tumblers (I suck at dimples), but my experience has been that brown through black is like purple, but on steroids.
Everyone's learning will be a bit different, but for me, purple was the belt that I had to pay attention to the most to achieve. Up through blue I was mostly "poking around with purpose", but I hadn't even really gotten the jiggle test down. At purple, I had to slow down and really listen to what the lock was telling me to get anywhere. It's the belt I've been the most proud to achieve, as I think it was the biggest jump in my skill. For the belts after, it's been mostly a refinement of what I learned to get purple.
I'm now working on a BB2 BiLock, which is a slider/sidebar lock-and I hadn't picked either type before. In my progressive pinning experience so far, it matches up to what I was expecting when I read up on it a bit back. I couldn't predict the specifics of how much tension, how much pick force, etc., but I had a general idea of how it would feel and work.
But I do agree that it's hard to understand what secondary security features might be like before you've even experienced the spectrum of security pins out there. And heck, I may be talking out of my ass as I haven't experienced a lot of what's out there at the higher levels. I'm sure there will be surprises for me, especially since I concentrated on my strengths. Belt rankings can hide a person's broad experience. Just going by the locks you've bothered to list on LPU, you've picked 2.5 times the number of locks that I have. I think you have the experience to make a good educated guess as to what you'll see at red and black.

The LPU belt system is why I didn't give up early on when I transitioned from transparent locks to the real thing. Normally people take any random lock and may find it too hard, then watch videos of others pick'em with ease and they would give up right there.
Each LPU level had me question my methods, like at first I had not realised that I was holding my picks wrong and that there were better ways. That I wasn't using the warding as a ledge in creative ways. And yes that person is right, some key bittings offer a bigger challenge than the belt level defines.
But that's not a bad thing, I have kept those unopened locks (Abus 72, Ti64, Ti65) and now realise they all have that same feature of very high pins and I was more used to keyways I can pick with a shallow hook (eg: ML 410 LOTO). So now I'm training for those high pins and learning more. At least the LPU belt system has taught me that with time and patience I'll find the reason why I'm failing and then will overcome that problem. Without that list and the gradual challenges, I would have given up a year ago, thought it was all too complicated an that it's not for me.
Also, you can't rise in that system without going online an interacting with the community. I've gained so much from listening to the experiences of other pickers on the Live events that Lady Lock is organising, I've met others of my level on reddit and discord and learned from their observations.
And that's the other advantage of that method, to make you aware that you aren't alone.

“ ABUS this guys an asshole” 😂🤣 just the way you said that cracks me up… now I’ve got to get my hands on one or two! I don’t take part in the ranking system, but I follow it so I know what locks to work on next. That’s the only reason I bought my 90a pro pac lock but you just happen to do your pac lock 200K video right after I got mine open. Thanks for the great in depth info Sandman!

“I promptly removed him from the group”… You really are my hero. I was literally shaking from the adrenaline when I recorded my first black belt open. It’s exciting. Locks being ranked to turn it into a challenging game is just fun.

Great explanation there! I would maybe also add that yellow belt locks can have 1 or 2 security pins (nothing more complicated than spools). I remember picking my first real lock. By that time I already had to deal with spools, because normal pin locks were not available to me other than acryl demo locks and cutaway practice locks. I bought a multipick training lock to teach my self what these security pins are and to progress further up the belt ranking system. The advantage was that I learned all I could about Serrated and T-pins too, so those came as no surprise when I reached green belt.
I also have to agree about the info you gave on green belt locks. The difficulty spectrum is indeed vast compared to the belts that come before green belt. Many green belt locks are like the "intro" locks (especially dimple locks) to some of the high security locks you'll pick for blue and purple belt.
I also strongly agree with what you said about blue belt locks, it is indeed your official introduction to high security locks. Right now, these are my favorites to pick after green. Although I haven't filmed any of them for blue belt, i find them a lot of fun to pick.
I also think that learning to pick different types of locks can make the journey much more exciting than sticking to pin tumbler only locks.
I my self find picking barrel pins and trampolines not as fun as picking spools in dimple locks (MTL and ABUS). 😂 So I switched from pin tumblers to dimple locks while going half way from green to blue belt.

Glad you removed that guy from the group. That behavior doesn’t belong in any hobby. If someone’s excited about something, be excited for them!
Great explanation of the belt ranking system too! It took me a long time to grasp what makes a lock fall in what level, and I’m definitely still learning too.
