  • Coed Glyn Cynon -
Cyn y chwyldro diwydiannol, roedd rhannau helaeth o gymoedd y de-ddwyrain wedi´u gorchuddio â hen goedwigoedd derw a bedw. Yn ystod yr unfed ganrif ar bymtheg daeth diwydianwyr o Loegr i dorri un o´r coedwigoedd hyn, a lenwai´r cwm rhwng Penderyn ac Abercynon, i wneud golosg i doddi haearn. Cythruddwyd un o´r beirdd lleol ac fe ymatebodd drwy gyfansoddi´r gerdd hynod hon; cân brotest amgylcheddol gyntaf ein llên. Mae´r gerdd, o awduriaeth anhysbys, wedi´i chadw mewn llawysgrif yn Llyfrgell Ganolog Caerdydd (gweler llawysgrif Caerdydd 2.6 yn y llun).

    (Glyn Cynon wood)
This extraordinary 16th century poem could be described as one of Britain´s oldest climate justice protest songs. Before the dawn of the industrial revolution, the valleys of south-east Wales were covered in old growth forest - a refuge for animals and humans alike, but English industrialists came to cut down the trees in the Cynon valley to make charcoal for smelting iron. An enraged local poet was driven to write these verses, cursing these English incomers who had no respect for this ancient forest. The poet evokes the birds to sentence the industrialists in a courthouse, where he would have an owl be the hangman. The poem, of anonymous authorship, is kept in a manuscript in Cardiff Central Library (Caerdydd MS 2.6. see image).
