    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    Great video. I'm debating replacing my '97 Huskie with the Milwaukee. For homeowner use, I think doing away with carburetors (cleaning, setting) fuel and air filters , spark plugs would be nice. You can set it on the shelf for a few months, charge the battery and turn it on.

      Exactly why I just picked up a milwaukee. I used mine old Stihl almost enough that it didn't bother me, cut up multiple cords of wood a year but the ability to simply grab and go, not have to look for gas, not have to make sure I haven't had the gas sit and go stale and cause problems, etc. is nice to have. Yea you can run out of battery using the milwaukee but for any homeowner thats not a problem, you're not cutting 8 hours a day non stop hard work on the saw so the time constraint with a 12 amp battery isn't an issue.

    Nice comparison. The ole 026 is a pro grade saw, vs a homeowner Milwaukee cordless tool. I would say the Milwaukee is impressive for what it is. Dollar for dollar the Milwaukee cuts good. Just price a prograde gas saw.

    no doubt the stihl cuts faster... but that milwaukee cuts pretty fast too.. if ya ask me the milwaukee wins hands down just from not having to put gas in it and worry about that stuff.. but over all it has much less noise no carb rebuilds no exhaust clean outs no spark plug to worry about no ignitions system no air filter and no starting... the milwaukee wins without a doubt.. i have one over here that i just got and still haven't gotten a chance to try it out.. i also have a few stihl saws and a couple husqvarna saws.. considering the husky saws are 36 and 48" saws the still have their place but for 90% of my cutting from now on will be with the milwaukee...

      you just need 500 bucks worth in batteries an rapid charger and a power source compared to a can of oil and gasoline and a spark plug here and there.
      It seems the maintainceless Milwaukee what is more or less a secondary ground cutter for an professionelle or for an DIYer comes to an price of an actual professionelle logger tool.

    the milwaukee is a nice unit for a homeowner or occasional user. From what i have seen wouldnt be good for a heavy user or even a homeowner that does a lot of firewood.What i see is if you go thru more than a gallon of gas in a 6-8 hour day with your gas saw then keep that. i saw a review where the gentleman had 3 fully charged batteries and within 1 hour all 3 were overheating but not dead yet.

    Still impressive for a battery and not sure it was fair plus no mixing fuel, you can keep it in your cab without stinking everything up and in just the convenience alone I think the Milwaukee wins and this come from a man who owns both a Gas Stihl and a Milwaukee electric.

  • @allthingsmowing

    Your dad, and it's very apparent, has way more experience in cutting than you do for sure so that's why he's quite quicker. But, it doesn't help that the chainsaw completely drowns out the quiet sound that little electric motor makes, thus leading to not knowing if you can push it harder to keep up, or maybe win, or if you're pushing it too hard which will, and proven in second cut, push it hard enough to get hung up lol

    There are a lot of gas saws that may not have done as well. We also do not know how well the chains were sharpened which makes a big difference. For a just a few second difference is speed I would much rather use the electric since it is quieter, less smelly, does not require any maintenance other than the chain, and costs less to operate. The electric will most likely last longer and keep its performance over the life of the tool, where a gas engine develops gradual loss of compression etc. The more you use the saw, the more money you will save over gas. It would be very easy to make another electric that has more power and more torque. Also he had to spend more time starting up gas saw when you could have been cutting already. With spare batteries you can also swap out battery faster than time it would take to mix oil and gas or pour mixed gas into tank. Also in situations where you have to tilt the saw, the gas may loose draw on the fuel in the tank when the tank level drops which the electric does not have an issue with. Don't forget replacing spark plugs and air filters on the gas as well. Or storing gas over time and it goes bad and then fouls up fuel lines or carb. Carb has to be rebuilt or cleaned.

  • @davewme
    @davewme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try it again, rather than wait for your dad start when you are ready.. the extra time to wait for him to put the saw on the ground, started and wound up, is all part of the benefit to electric. Use the benefit. Especially if you are going against a top end stihl saw.. try against one similarly priced. With factory chain.

    I have used both battery and gas. The price point of a gas Stihl or Echo is lower than the electric. After almost 40 years of experience cutting, the best dollar value is the gas saw. The ridiculous price of an extra battery will buy years of fuel for a gas chainsaw. And I know that if treat it right, a well made gas saw will give 20 plus years of service. Electric technology will change and I doubt if you will even be able to buy batteries for it in 10 years. The electric wins for the cottage owner cutting a few trees each year but not if you need 5 chords of wood annually. Great video watching father and son enjoy themselves!

    Finally a real world review with a real chainsaw and a sharp chain. Well done! I've seen so many demos where they put this saw up against a crappy homeowners saw with a dull chain. I think all the pros outweigh a little less speed. I always have my carbs gum up and then I'm always looking for 2 stroke oil to mix and then the gas is bad, blah, blah blah. This looks so much better. Another positive i notice is that my friends clutch on his saw is messed up so when it idles the chain spins, so dangerous! You will never have that problem with this saw.

    Well I mean the milwaukee cranks out power compared to a 40cc not a 50cc so the fact that it kept up with a 50cc has saw is incredibly impressive , the milwaukee chainsaw is hands down the best electric chainsaw in the 14-16 inch class it definitely punches way above it's weight class and it's a fantastic tool to have just in the truck alongside my other milwaukee tools so that when I am on a job and there is piece of something lying on the side of the road I know I can just pull over grab the mwaukee out and buck it up for my firewood service and don't have to worry if I have gas mix in the truck with me plus of I take the bar off it fits nicely inside my tool box great saw for the money

    better test would of being to hand the new one to your dad as he has much more skill, then time each in his hands. I get the Milwaukee to go though aussie hard wood as fast as your dads going though that soft looking wood, atleast soft when you put it next to a gum tree. as it is that hard the wood is dark red and about as solid as a rock made of wood harder when dry too, I feel a lot of the speed must be in the skill of the user!

  • @y2ktube
    @y2ktube 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The extra SIX seconds that the cut took for the Milwaukee, is a small price to pay compared to the : Mix the messy fuel, fill up that messy smelly dangerous fuel, the many times of temperamental starting-up of most ANY DogGone 2 cycle motor, and finally, THE MAINTENANCE ! - Yeah, I'll take the SIX seconds...
    BTW, I own 3 Stihl units upto a 24in bar. - Added an 18in Oregon bar, and without a doubt the battery powered Milwaukee is by far the MOST convenient & used unit...

    Before "going to press", maybe it'd be a good idea to research EXACTLY which chain each saw is running., and have each expertly filed by the same filer. FYI a .043 (inch gauge) chain would likely be a 3/8" pitch LP (low profile) NK (narrow kerf) chain. Facts do matter. And BTW Makita has some really nice battery saws now.

    Your dad definitely has better technique (experience). It would have been more fair if you guys had swapped saws. It's also worth noting the time he loses on each cut in starting the saw. I love Stihl equipment, but for the non-professional user (ex: landowner, rancher, homeowner, outdoorsman) I imagine the Milwaukee is a real contender. After all, that's how most of us (myself included) use a chainsaw: go out because I need to deal with a specific problem, or chop up some firewood, fell a specific tree, or remove a fallen tree. I'm not trying to clear cut a forest. For my money, I think it's pretty impressive that a low maintenance and quiet battery powered saw can nearly keep up with a professional-grade gas saw of a similar size class. And, I already have a dozen Milwaukee batteries around here for a slew of other tools... which makes any purchase decision easier to make.

    • @jps101574
      @jps101574 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      However, if you already had Milwaukee batteries from other tools, you might be able to buy their chainsaw for less and it might be pretty close to gas saw in value.

    Electric saws are very lightweight in comparison, but you can't beat a gas saw. Gas saw will run circles around that electric saw. This is why loggers and tree service use gas saws and always will. Electric saws are ok to limb/prune with and to cut smaller stuff. Leave the bigger stuff to a real saw.

    • @Coloradocop
      @Coloradocop 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not so sure they "always will". Battery powered tool technology has been catching up at a surprising rate in the past few years. 15 years ago I swore I'd never own another battery powered tool, after having a crappy drill that would slowly drill a couple of holes before needing a recharge. Now I own a fleet of battery powered tools, to include some demanding items like an angle grinder. It wasn't too long ago that I had people telling me how professional mechanics would never use a battery powered impact wrench... my Milwaukee impact runs circles around my air powered (pro-grade) tools today, and you can see battery powered impacts in garages all over the country. My Sawzall (battery) keeps up with my dad's Sawzall (electric). Given another 10-15 years of development and advancement, and gas powered chain saws may be trying to keep up with the battery versions the pros are carrying! It may sound far-fetched today, but what we have today was far-fetched 10-15 years ago, too.

    • @brandonhamilton3416
      @brandonhamilton3416 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Battery powered tools have come a long way, but I doubt you can use one in the woods all day every day year after year and keep up with 70+ cc pro saws. For the homeowner or someone that cuts a little firewood it's ok, even though a good gas saw will be cheaper in the long run. Definitely need (battery powered) for professional use. You'll burn up several battery powered saws and many batteries trying to keep up with one pro saw for several years. Just would cost entirely too much and not be nearly as effective and efficient.

    • @Coloradocop
      @Coloradocop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brandonhamilton3416 For the time being I'll 100% agree with you in terms of a battery powered chainsaw not being able to keep up with a professional gas-operated saw. But, when we see what the last 10-15 years of development have done for battery powered technology, I wouldn't be surprised if that whole dynamic changes in another 10-15 years. Again, this is the exact same conversation we were all having about 10-15 years ago about how battery powered impact wrenches would never keep up with air tools... now they run circles around most air tools. The future could be exciting for development on this kind of stuff.

      Exactly. A cordless saw is so much better than a gas saw in so many ways.

      Meor Azmi Did you get a Milwaukee electric chainsaw? If so, how do you like it? I was planning to get one as well to supplement my battery powered Milwaukee tools. But reviews for the electric saws by Milwaukee, Husky and Stihl have discouraged me from Milwaukee. The Milwaukee came in dead last for 4 reasons:
      1) It had a greater tendency to stall (as seen in this video)
      2) The very narrow chain had a much greater tendency to slip out of the bar
      3) The chain lube system tended to leak and also spray too much oil
      4) The chain tensioning system was weak and more awkward than Stihl's tool-less means.

      How far down the road though? now 4 years later how is the electric saw going? I bet "the Dads" old Stihl is still going.

    One thing to keep in mind... even if the Milwaukee is slower (it seems pretty close anyways) you don’t have to put up with trying to start the dang thing by pulling the gas chainsaw 30 times before you get it to start. And then once it starts trying to keep it from cutting out on you. The Milwaukee will have much less maintenance and you have instant power. Not to mention not needing to buy gas for it!

      I love my milwaukee tools with a passion. But i have to defend my love for chainsaws, amd good running chainsaw should start in less than 5 pulls bone cold. Run without quitting and start up first pull when warm, if not, its not the saw. Its a lack of maintenance.

    • @reddawgrup1779
      @reddawgrup1779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Billy Boots yea kind of the point I think... Non gas needs way less maintenance!! No gas treatment during non use, no carb maintenance and so on...

      @@billyboots3730 Imagine if you had to press the "start" button on a cordless saw at least 5 times to get it going. It would be pretty annoying and lame, wouldn't be? And then it would run super noisy and vibrate like a tractor.

    You should include the time you had to wait for your dad to start that up because that is all part of the selling points of an electric chainsaw. That and not having to add gas. You would need several batteries to make it ideal. I have several Milwaukee products so I have 12 batteries. I run out of energy before I run out of batteries

    According to Milwaukee the battery saw is the eqivalent to a 45 cc gas saw the Stihl 026 is 49 cc so it just a little more then the Milwaukee can handle. Great contest and great video, oh also your Dad has WAY better technique

    My buddy brought a Jonsered electric 14" up north with us in sub zero Fahrenheit temps. He left it out overnight by accident, and we had to go forage for wood the next day. We ended up finding a couple of 10-12" diameter birch (not hard) and ash (quite hard) logs. They were both between 15-20 feet long. He proceeded to effortlessly cut through this stuff, until we had a pile of ~18" long logs. The saw went down to 50% power, but that was exceedingly impressive. Especially after leaving the saw in the cold overnight.

  • @pilgrimstranger3186
    @pilgrimstranger3186 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m sure the gas is still better , but I would really like to see you do a comparison after replacing that junk homeowner.043 bar and safety chain with an Identical or similar bar and chain to what the Stihl has. We may just have a chance then. An Oregon 3/8” LP .050 bar & 91VXL chain or similar would be a good place to start at a cost of about $50 total. A must for any small saw I buy, and in my opinion much safer if you have any chainsaw experience at all.

    To come that close with a 50cc gas saw is amazing. The Milwaukee is more equivalent to a 35 cc saw. The bigger thicker kerf of the Stihl makes them roughly equivalent.

      the point is gasoline tools are pretty much indestructable. They run with normal maintaince 15 years. You would need the price of the tool itself x 2 for batterie replacements for the power tool alternative.
      The other problem is autonomus use. Where do loggers in brazil charge there batteries 20 km inside some forest, Diesel generator?
