ill be honest ive seen tommy emmanuel live and hes a great guitarist, but not necessarily one of the best. i play a lot of his stuff and a lot of it is in open position and is relatively easy you just have to learn how to travis pick and it took me awhile to learn that because its pretty hard at first. But i respect tommy as a guitar player because he is really great. but there are others that are way better than him.
richardd2063 He's unique, but I don't think he'll be one of the greats, maybe he'll only reach medium level at his peak. Take a look at Joe Robinson for example. He was miles better than Sungha back then when he was at the same age as Sungha right now (18). Sungha becomes famous because he covers a lot of hit songs. But technically, he's.a standard fingerpicker IMO.
ariefgant technically standard ? he's perfect at any fingerpicking technique, from the classic one like tremolo or modern one like mute attack. He's already one of the best in the world now in term of fingerpicking. Would you please name some better fingerpickers please, if you can. And it's not the technique that makes someone great, but being known and loved by people. Even Bob Dyan is considered one of 100 greatest singers of all time (no.7 - list by The Rolling Stones). I can name few guitarists who has better style/technique than Sungha does, but I believe none of them is or will be considered one of the greatest.
Lê Thái Hiển Then guess you only listen to him, or you don't really play guitar. I've been learning fingerpicks for 5 years and count (yes I'm a newbie). I've been listened to legendary names such as Django Reindhardt, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel, etc. At least I know about what true fingerstyle is. Listen to those names and you'll understand what I say. Yes Sungha is still young, It's not fair to compare him with those legends. Don't worry, I still have Joe Robinson and Gareth Pearson whom already way better back then when they were at Sungha's age. They have way more complex technique and musical ability than Sungha. And of course, they're way better than Sungha.
ariefgant lol if you say what Joe Robinson and G.Pearson does is more complex, then I'm pretty sure you've only watched some simple covers of Sungha and he's the only asian fingerpicking guitarist that you know. And how exactly do you compare musical ability ? They all compose songs, cover songs in their own styles. Oh, please don't say that just because you prefer Joe or Gareth's songs, you think they have better musical ability. And again, we're talking about being great, but not being more skillful. And I'm pretty sure the one who has way more views, way more subscribes, way more tours, way more songs - covers - albums - tours is the one of, if not the greatest among his generation. btw I do play guitar. and 5 years ? yeah, you're right about being a newbie.
***** Of course he could be a great guitarist, but not one of the greatest like Tommy, Chet, Jerry, Django. Because no one can be matched with them. You know I'm just predicting, not assuming. Like when I saw a potential player in soccer, I could freely make my own judging regarding the player future. I know my prediction either could be correct or incorrect. That's not my point. My point is, I am free to judge someone's future.
Two of my favorite guitarists playing songs by my favorite band. My mind has been blown. I love how Emmanuel puts Sungha at the center of the stage and really lets him shine.
Amazing! Tommy leads the way to showing what CAN be done on an acoustic guitar and enthusiastically and generously gives of himself to the next generation of musicians who follow in his footsteps and, just maybe, will go beyond. This man is a gift.
How I love Tommy Emmanuel! Not only is he a world class guitarist - he is also not so full of himself that he cant go on stage with upcoming stars, and it seems like he enjoys every minute of it :) A joy to watch!
OH MY GOD!! This is monumental! I spotted this as a related vid after Sungha's Dad's first posting from the concert on his own channel. It hadn't even entered my mind yet that there might be more videos already up, and I hoped in my comment that there would be more footage. Sungha and Tommy???!!! This may be historical footage. Another of the world's most respected masters, bowing to Sungha's prowess, and not just sharing the stage with him, but happily jamming with him. Simply awesome!!
The nascent talent of Sungha ( already really talented ) and the great kindness of Tommy. A music that delights me. The most delightful guitar duo on youtube.
I think our wonderful Aussie guitarist feels very humbled, at the same time remembering that he and his brother Phil, started at a young age performing guitar together. But then Tommy & Phil love to foster young talented artists here down under as well as overseas. And the young Sungha Jung must also be elated at being given the chance to play alongside Tommy and other great guitarists of the world.
What a thrill for him for sure; one he's never going to forget! Music (along with love), truly is a universal language! everyone can enjoy, feel and understand!
+T Rays Well said. It's strange how you can sometimes come across like minds through the comments section. I looked at your channel and was pleasantly surprised, you see I am a dedicated guitarist, who did at one time brew his own Kombusha tea (I just tired out of the weekly turnaround) and also is certain that our (the US) economic situation is untenable. Like "they" say, great minds think alike. God bless!
Discovering you on TH-cam has been one of the best things recently. I simply love listening to your flawless music. And, my God! This has been terrific. Thanks a lot and all the best. Just wished, I could hear you live
I've seen another youtube video of the boy when he was much younger playing a solo chord/melody version of With or Without You. It's great to see him playing here with Tommy Emmanuel. What a young prodigy!
Großartig!!! Ich spiele schon seit 40 Jahren Guitarre und da kommt so ein kleiner Bengel (nicht negativ gemeint) daher und liefert sowas ab!!! Ich ziehe meinen Hut
Just love seeing all this amazing talent in the young,, good on Tommy Emmanuel, loving his smiles , must give him fuzzies seeing these amazing young musicians :)
It's always nice to see consummate masters of their craft getting together and having such fun! Difference in ages? They obviously don't care; why should we?
And this folks is how the music goes on..... The veterans sharing and then eventually passing on the torch to the up and comers! We get to listen to it all for free! What a life!
Well, cant really compare the two because they are playing different kinds of music. Joe Robinson is awesome though, and very technically gifted, but i wouldnt say sungha is a standard picker. He uses some advanced techniques in his playing, and i actually prefer sungha's original music more than joe's :)
The blend of these two artists from two totally different cultural backgrounds speaks volumes for the medium of music and it's potential to bridge so many gaps between variant sects of humanity. What a SHAME that such a great number of people commenting on this video still don't quite seem to GET IT...
When I first saw Sungha Jung's videos, I went ecstatic then showed his videos to my dad who said, "that's nothing, you should see Tommy Emmanuel, the greatest guitarist ever." Then while browsing his videos my dad and I see THIS!!! wow.
TE is the most joyful guitarist on the planet. Unmatched skill yet so gracious to play with others and let them shine. He lets many local's play with him at concerts. He is a great human being. Proud to say I've seen him live x3.
I have been watching Sungha since he was around six years old and even at that age he was an amazing guitarist. You can see how impressed Tommy is when Sungha kicks off this old Beatles tune. Great job as always!
Very good, I´t must be a great honor to Jung to meet and play with the biggest of them all, it must be amazing to play with Tommy Emmanuel. Jung, himself, can be a very good guitarist if he practice moore and find the feeling in all kind of music.........it will come by the year.
Thank you SO much for this, ellelesrose! I thought I'd seen all of Sungha's earlier videos, but I don't remember this one at all. I love the way he digs in and has Tommy doing those double-takes, the first recognition and acknowledgement of his incredible potential. This time around, though, not only is it a bigger stage, but I'm seeing Tommy accepting and addressing Sungha as an equal. They're one-on-one as musicians, not "big star and little kid." Coming from Tommy, that's big!
This reminds me of when people say "this guys the best or that guy's the best". What really matters if you enjoy it personally, and you are missing out if you don't have enough taste in music to enjoy guys like Tommy. So for now Tommy is the best as I enjoy listening and watching, because I've listened to many guitarists and he's as fun as it gets.
I've heard Tommy say in an interview that what he loves most is playing harmonies while someone else is playing a tune that he knows well or one that he wrote. He doesn't get to do it very often. It's just amazing to hear what Tommy can come up with though.
Tommy when you coming to New Brunswick, Canada! Oh and bring Jung with you Ive been watching his videos since he was little! We cant wait hope to see you here sooner or later! Jason
Usually il sit here and think "i dont like this this this and this" but when i watched this i had that same mentallity, then i just started enjoying it; because this music is purely fantastic
Ermm... Instead of arguing can't we just watch these two guitar players having a good time? Hats off to Tommy because he always does stuff to help talented players.
it's so cool that Tommy takes time to sit down and really chill with great younger players...Tommy's the man!
What your not getting is that little boy is carrying tommy lol
I love and respect Tommy Emmanuel tremendously. Tommy is a true musician, who let this brilliant kid shine. AWESOME!!!! Shine on Sugha Jung.
you know you are someone when you get to play along side tommy ..one of the best guitarists in the world ...
ill be honest ive seen tommy emmanuel live and hes a great guitarist, but not necessarily one of the best. i play a lot of his stuff and a lot of it is in open position and is relatively easy you just have to learn how to travis pick and it took me awhile to learn that because its pretty hard at first. But i respect tommy as a guitar player because he is really great. but there are others that are way better than him.
so who is the best guitarist on your list?
Yeah...
Your know you are someone when you can compete with an asian.
it´s not the being able to play it, but the compostion of the song
Sungha will surely be one of the greats when he`s older. If you look at his vids he is excellent now! Go Sungha!!! :)
richardd2063 He's unique, but I don't think he'll be one of the greats, maybe he'll only reach medium level at his peak. Take a look at Joe Robinson for example. Two of the most amazing acoustic players in the world and they are just having fun!! God what a glorious thing to be able to do..
worldclass guitarist doing the right thing sharing his passion for music with the young...great talent everywhere througout the world...
Two of my favorite guitarists playing songs by my favorite band. My mind has been blown.
I love how Emmanuel puts Sungha at the center of the stage and really lets him shine.
Tommy's so cool the way he goes out of his way to show he's not playing anything in the beginning. What a gentleman/person.
A very humble man many a times he plays with youngsters and encourages them. great showmanship and witty at his shows. Wish him the very best
My favourite fingerstyle artists together. This is awesome!
Amazing! Tommy leads the way to showing what CAN be done on an acoustic guitar and enthusiastically and generously gives of himself to the next generation of musicians who follow in his footsteps and, just maybe, will go beyond. This man is a gift.

My two favorite acoustic players on youtube so far!!!!
Even heard jake shimumbukuro ? Acoustic ukulele world killer ...
Tommy just bringing more and more stars to the light. What a great person, and great musician!
OH MY GOD!! This is monumental!

Tommy is an ambassador for all that is good, in a world gone crazy. Thank you for your joy and ego-less enthusiasm !
music really is the only international language!!! this totally proves it...
mathematics is also an international language
The nascent talent of Sungha ( already really talented ) and the great
kindness of Tommy.
A music that delights me.

I think our wonderful Aussie guitarist feels very humbled, at the same time remembering that he and his brother Phil, started at a young age performing guitar together. Patrick Foster That's fantastic! whereas I used to play the guitar, now the piano, I always sang... and happy to meet you! :-)
Discovering you on TH-cam has been one of the best things recently. I simply love listening to your flawless music. And, my God! This has been terrific. Thanks a lot and all the best. Just wished, I could hear you live

The passing of the torch
Nice sound and fun times here. Glad to see that fun is back in music. It got so serious for awhile. Bring back the fun times like this.

You know the kid is good when Tommy nods his head approving what he did on 4:35.
Just love seeing all this amazing talent in the young,, good on Tommy Emmanuel, loving his smiles , must give him fuzzies seeing these amazing young musicians :)
Genius
Music can break any kind of gap, that's so true, they literally just talking through music, and that's the best sound ever!
What a fucking conversation these two had.
Genius is a great word herein.
I can tell Tommy enjoyed playing that song with you.

It's always nice to see consummate masters of their craft getting together and having such fun! Difference in ages? They obviously don't care; why should we?
I can only imagine this is how Tommy was when he was this age.
And this folks is how the music goes on..... The veterans sharing and then eventually passing on the torch to the up and comers! We get to listen to it all for free! What a life!

They're both great, and Tommy is one of the most compassionate people I've met.
Well, cant really compare the two because they are playing different kinds of music. Joe Robinson is awesome though, and very technically gifted, but i wouldnt say sungha is a standard picker. Haha Tommy's really humpin it trying to keep up with Sungha! Damn that kid is a freak!
When I first saw Sungha Jung's videos, I went ecstatic then showed his videos to my dad who said, "that's nothing, you should see Tommy Emmanuel, the greatest guitarist ever." Then while browsing his videos my dad and I see THIS!!! wow.

ОК

I have been watching Sungha since he was around six years old and even at that age he was an amazing guitarist. You can see how impressed Tommy is when Sungha kicks off this old Beatles tune. Great job as always!
I'm a big fan of both and am glad they got to play together! :)
They don't understand each other's language but they communicate well through music !!
thanks for this great to see these guys enjoying themselves..
Very good, I´t must be a great honor to Jung to meet and play with the biggest of them all, it must be amazing to play with Tommy Emmanuel. Jung, himself, can be a very good guitarist if he practice moore and find the feeling in all kind of music.........it will come by the year.

Young master Jung is going to be one hell of a performer. Touché son!
great to see a young talent playing with an older talent . You can see Tommy enjoyed him.
Wow, very cool. This is a great example of what the acoustic guitar can do in the hands of two capable players.
Tommy when you coming to New Brunswick, Canada! Oh and bring Jung with you Ive been watching his videos since he was little! We cant wait hope to see you here sooner or later! Jason
It doesn't get any better than this.

You played with Tommy Emanuel! Respect!!!!
Music brings people together.. I feel like a cheesy old television commercial saying it, but the looks on these amazing guitarist's faces says it all.
Great stuff! They work together nicely!
Tommy is such a badass player and an incredible human :)
