yes, it's due to translation! in order to make the english words work with the beat/tempo/rhythm, some words and phrases had to be changed to accommodate that. it's the same for many translations- the meaning is overall the same, it's just some liberties had to be taken in order to have the song flow better, i hope that answers your (and a lot of other peoples') question! ❤

Simple and Clean depicts the crush of two young people. Recall the parts of "Don't get me wrong, I love you, but does that mean I have to meet your father? When we are older you will understand what I meant when I said no, I don’t think life is quite that simple." and "Hold me, whatever lies beyond this morning, is a little later on. Regardless of warnings, the future doesn't scare me at all." These sound like the poeticized insecurities of two kids who are immature, yet willing to explore their connection. Then there’s lyrics like “My heart’s a battleground” and “I need more affection than you know”. Here, the relationship is seasoned and now experiencing the more complex challenges of life. Now we have lines like “I don’t need pretty flowers, don’t need a witness, let’s have our rings be the same color” and the parts about making the “eternal oath”, clearly indicating that the couple is ready to be bound to one another forever.

I was hoping someone else would see the similarities in the subject matter of each title's main song. Kingdom Hearts is Love. Love is the connection we share with each other wherever we go in life, as friends or as something more. Sora has found great connection through his heart with so many people. Love is imperfect. Love is in an eternal struggle with good and bad, joy and sorrow, light and dark. But Love is eternal and inevitable. For friends to make an Oath together; To love each other no matter what struggles they'll inevitably face, is truly the theme - I feel - for this series. And Utada captured it so well.
Though different in lyrics, the english and japanese version both share the same message of if you are going to love someone make sure that it is true. Do not doubt, and do not waiver. Do be true and do be faithful. I love you is not just a sentence. It is a commitment.

This is how I see both versions of the song. The person in Don't Think Twice is of someone confident enough to their love to reject any second guessing. The person in Chikai is someone soft and meek that think he/she isn't good enough (that's why the "don't think twice") but surely wants to get binded with the other person (and the "I don't think it'd take this long"). If both lyrics are given side to side, it's actually kind of like a conversation. I think it's not that the English lyrics is worse than the Japanese. It's just two different personalities expressing the same love.

I actually think that the two songs are two seperate songs about two persons in love (I'm guessing it's the continuation of Simple and Clean and Sanctuary) and each of them have differant personalities, which leads to one (don't think twice) being confident and confused about why the other doesn't tell them everything while the other (chikai) is scared and deals with a lot of self doubts. But both of them share the same thing, love I think the two songs are equally beautiful and it feels more like a conversation rather than a mistranslation

i love these lyrics, it makes it more clear that this song is from riku's perspective. unfortunately a lot of people don't know about nomura's interviews where he explicitly mentions the main songs are sora and riku focused
One of the biggest reasons I believe that this is from Riku's POV rather than Kairi's are the opening lyrics: "I never cared about stuff like destiny." From what we know about Kairi's character, this line wouldn't make much sense coming from her POV. She has always been more connected to themes like destiny/fate, unlike Riku. Some examples include the charm she gives to Sora in KH1, her strong desire to share a paopu fruit with him in order to ensure they will always remain in each other's lives, the fact that her Keyblade is literally named Destiny's Embrace. Kairi is someone who is shown to be afraid of change, so it would be very easy for her to want to believe things are "fate" or "destiny" to preserve the memories she holds dear.

I've always loved this song in both languages. I had always understood Utada's perspective. Its really fitting that this song is on an album called face my fears. This year I fell deeply in love with someone... Or perhaps I always was. A lot of people are saying this version of the song is like a Sokai confirming song, but it's really not. Even if I myself think that Riku is really the only one with prominent insecurities, regardless, the only insecurity based on love for Sora or Kairi is that For Sora: Am I really in love with anyone? What is love? What are my feelings? For Kairi: Does Sora still like me or did his feelings disappear? The only one of the trio I can pretty much for sure say would be insecure about anyone loving him is Riku. It's clear his past affects him, and many times he's unsure of if he even deserves certain things or people from what he's done. He's the most likely to react as if he doesn't deserve the love of the person he's in love if that person confesses to him. For Riku, it's like Riku: Do I even deserve to have Sora's friendship? After all I did, why does he still stick with me? What kind of feeling is this? Whatever it is, I'm not going to get in the way of Kairi and Sora. If Sora, for instance, confessed to him, Riku would react like, "I've been in love with you for a while now, even though it took me a while to realize that the feeling was love, but are you sure you want me? After all the ways that I've hurt you in the past? What about Kairi? Whoever Riku would be talking to, I think this version is more likely him than either Sora or Kairi. Okay so, of course i will think of the ship i most like of the game, and it is because the song represente a true love, and the connection of two souls, in kindom hearts every one is connected to another in some kind of way romanticly or in the friendship way, their connection will last forever and you can see this true love forever in everyone Sora, Riku, Kairi And the others (sorry there are too many characters to mention) When they sacrifice for the others without thinking twice, or go for anothers worlds looking for them, praying for them. The song isn't mention about a ship, it is mention about their connetion their true love that will last forever, that their will never doubt to sacrifice everything for the people they most love. Also, just because the word oath is in Oathkeeper doesn't mean it means anything. Oathkeeper refers to the promise between Sora and Kairi, but this song seems to refer to a new oath. Sora and Kairi have their promise to come back to each other, but what if this new oath is like a renewed one between Sora and Riku. We know that when they were little, Riku likely made a promise to protect Sora (from analyzing chain of memories), and since it was broken in kh1, it would make sense for Riku to not only make a promise, but a binding, renewed oath to Sora to not only protect him, but to be there, together with him. Yeah we can tell that Riku already promised himself he would do that (you can especially tell in DDD), but I feel that he would make an official oath to Sora to show him that, this time, he's going to keep it.

If you’d like it to be more properly explained, there is a TH-camr, Tennelle Flowers, who made a video analysis of it. I highly recommend it if you care enough. He’s also made two other videos on the topic of explaining how Riku is gay, and I recommend those other two videos as well, once again, if you care enough to check them out.

As much as I believe Nomura and we will keep Sora. It is not unheard of for devs to straight up lie about shit to create a shock. There remains a small chance Sora will be gone. And damn, he can still go and come back years later when they eventually come back around to making another KH game.

Even after playing the game and seeing that SoKai is canon, I still strongly feel this is from Riku's point of view and that this might be foreshadowing stuff for KH4 or other games after it. -this fandom can sometimes be toxic just like all others but pls don't kill me for having an opinion-
First, technically Sokai isn't canon because: 1. Nomura wants to leave every ship up to the player to figure out if they think it's a thing 2. Nomura didn't confirm it (from what I know) 3. There are plenty of Sokai scenes I can explain as a two characters that are best friends if I so chose But also, like, yes. I strongly agree in thinking that it's from Riku's point of view. Sora and Kairi are more of the "I know who I love and I'm not gonna hesitate" kinda people while Riku is definitely the more insecure one
For sure. In the orchestra version there is a sokai montage that ends with the scene where the two share the paopu fruit. The credits end with the picture in which the two share it. (So after this sentence has been sung). In general you can find things in the whole song that fit with Sora and Kairi. "It's not even a promise, it's an oath" In the first game he promised her to return to her and didn't keep it. But this time he make an oath.
It doesn't seem that way. This is about someone longing for love, but not feeling worthy. And there's a few key lyrics that hint at a particular character that is not Kairi.

All 3 songs from KH were about marriage...The songs are a continuation of each of sorts, that's how it fits to KH in a way. The japanese ones are more explicit about it.
If you take the time to listen to Simple and Clean, Sanctuary and then this one and really think about the lyrics, all three of the songs are telling the story of young lovers going through different stages of their relationship. Simple and Clean was basically like two kids worried about what it actually means to be in a relationship. Like meeting each other's family and putting each other first. Sanctuary was about their relationship getting deeper. Like she sees her significant other literally as her everything. This song seems to be about them mentally preparing for marriage. As far as how it relates to kingdom hearts, I don't think any of her songs actually do have anything to do with the story. But the themes of the songs kind of just fit Kingdom Hearts somehow.
I see it more in Kairi’s perspective but I can also see why you can think Riku. I think if you do put it in perspective of the game, one or the other is thinking of Sora.

It's pretty far fetched to say this song is about any other couple, and even if the lyrics don't precisely match their relationship, let's be honest, the theme songs for KH have rarely made sense in context of the games.

Actually, she started in the music industry around 95 or 97. so it's actually a little more then 2 decades.

One of the biggest reasons I believe that this is from Riku's POV rather than Kairi's are the opening lyrics: "I never cared about stuff like destiny." From what we know about Kairi's character, this line wouldn't make much sense coming from her POV. She has always been more connected to themes like destiny/fate, unlike Riku. Some examples include the charm she gives to Sora in KH1, her strong desire to share a paopu fruit with him in order to ensure they will always remain in each other's lives, the fact that her Keyblade is literally named Destiny's Embrace. Kairi is someone who is shown to be afraid of change, so it would be very easy for her to want to believe things are "fate" or "destiny" to preserve the memories she holds dear.

I've always loved this song in both languages. I had always understood Utada's perspective. Its really fitting that this song is on an album called face my fears. This year I fell deeply in love with someone... Or perhaps I always was. This morning, as I lay in our bed, waiting for her to come home from her trip, this song came on and it brought true tears to my eyes. I was sobbing; it felt as though Utada and I where in exactly the same state of heart and mind. Also, just because the word oath is in Oathkeeper doesn't mean it means anything. Oathkeeper refers to the promise between Sora and Kairi, but this song seems to refer to a new oath. Sora and Kairi have their promise to come back to each other, but what if this new oath is like a renewed one between Sora and Riku. We know that when they were little, Riku likely made a promise to protect Sora (from analyzing chain of memories), and since it was broken in kh1, it would make sense for Riku to not only make a promise, but a binding, renewed oath to Sora to not only protect him, but to be there, together with him. Yeah we can tell that Riku already promised himself he would do that (you can especially tell in DDD), but I feel that he would make an official oath to Sora to show him that, this time, he's going to keep it.

Even after playing the game and seeing that SoKai is canon, I still strongly feel this is from Riku's point of view and that this might be foreshadowing stuff for KH4 or other games after it.

First, technically Sokai isn't canon because:
1. Nomura wants to leave every ship up to the player to figure out if they think it's a thing
2. Nomura didn't confirm it (from what I know)

For sure. In the orchestra version there is a sokai montage that ends with the scene where the two share the paopu fruit. The credits end with the picture in which the two share it. (So after this sentence has been sung). In general you can find things in the whole song that fit with Sora and Kairi. "It's not even a promise, it's an oath" In the first game he promised her to return to her and didn't keep it. But this time he make an oath.
It doesn't seem that way. This is about someone longing for love, but not feeling worthy. And there's a few key lyrics that hint at a particular character that is not Kairi.

All 3 songs from KH were about marriage...The songs are a continuation of each of sorts, that's how it fits to KH in a way. The japanese ones are more explicit about it.
If you take the time to listen to Simple and Clean, Sanctuary and then this one and really think about the lyrics, all three of the songs are telling the story of young lovers going through different stages of their relationship. Simple and Clean was basically like two kids worried about what it actually means to be in a relationship. Like meeting each other's family and putting each other first. Sanctuary was about their relationship getting deeper. Like she sees her significant other literally as her everything. This song seems to be about them mentally preparing for marriage. As far as how it relates to kingdom hearts, I don't think any of her songs actually do have anything to do with the story. But the themes of the songs kind of just fit Kingdom Hearts somehow.
