one thing i find really interesting, and somewhat ironic, is the purposeful regression in opinion, when foams of all varieties were "discovered" and started (i.e. jelly epoch and similars) people liked it enough that the demand for foam stuffed gasket mounted boards grew greatly, and so other manufacturers and brands started incorporating things like that all over the place, but when that became the "norm" i started noticing a lot of purposefully simple, top mounted non-foam non-flexcut boards starting to surface, as if they only like something when its not the main standard, a "i dont like it because everyone else likes it" sorta deal that shifts the ecosystem over time
I don’t lube and I don’t clip yet I feel like I’m happier with my few different size keebs than people who have Several EndGame boards. Nothing but Budget boards with simple RGBs and clearance switches or bulk buys.
for sure, it's a lot of trying to be unqiue but also new people finding what they like (such as "top mounted non-foam non-flexcut boards") which they create demand for, but yea totally see a shift
Its nice to see someone talk about the overall scene in general, rather than watching a review or build stream lol. I've been in the hobby since the beginning of the pandemic and had similar thoughts watching the hobby grow and evolve, with the budget boards taking a huge leap in innovation and price in 2022. I find it odd that foam started as a cheap mod for budget boards and has become a positive feature for keyboards, where as flex cuts were a high end feature (afaik) that now a lot of people dislike as it became an accessible feature. I'm really hoping after the flex cut trend is over that cooler leaf spring style mounts become a new trend, as I've always thought those looked very interesting and a step up from gaskets in terms of typing feel.
i have been slowly falling out of love with the hobby since joining in 2019 as i lose interest in what is coming out and seeing that the market is kind of poopy. i am really happy to see budget options growing but personally, i have oriented toward privately designed boards as i enjoy learning fusion360 and meeting other smaller designers. i really do see myself enjoying this hobby longer just designing boards to my own tastes rather than waiting ages for groupbuys to fulfill! edit: spelling!
i got into the hobby at the end of 2019. the hobby got very hyped around covid times, and not that it has slowed down a bit, or over saturated with cheap boards, you can find really good endgame level stuff for cheap on mechmarket. i picked up a NIB Cruel World CW88 for under msrp.
A lot of the boards coming out lately feature gimmicks that I feel like I would get bored of after a week. Only thing I'm keeping an eye out for is layouts I don't already have like full sized or alice, or an electro capacitive or alps compatible high end board
Nice, a new video. I really like the innovation behind the novelkey cream+ inserts. Honestly, that is the direction I feel will bring further customizability in terms of the bottom out sound signature of switches, and hopefully it is something which isnt limited to novelkeys (be it due to cost, patented design, etc) and is able to propagate through the industry. Hopefully there is the introduction of a tactile stem with inserts as well as since I personally like tactiles more but find that a lot of tactiles tend to have a terrible bottom out sound signature compared to the linears.
I would like to see companies having stock of PCBs after the GB for a lot longer because they can be faulty or blow out. You get stuck for a while without any PCB. Universal PCB option is always a winner in my books.
Well there’s now switch stems with several different material inserts to affect sound profiles like on the new NK cream + switches… boards are getting cheaper and more accessible. What is lacking and part of why some people don’t get into customs is custom full size options. I can think of one readily available full size solid aluminum cnc cut hotswap.. the Epomaker TH100
2023 will be the year for in-stock entry level boards, qwertykeys already started with the qk65, mode-sonnet & envoy. For us topre snobs, its the year we kick off for real. Already seen the theca rubrehose with more to come. I believe it’s growing because of the people getting burnt out of the same cookie-cutter “thocc” end game sounds and they want something different.
Me personally, I'm a man of a good sounding top mount and good aesthetics. I'd love to see more winkeyless 65% with symmetrical blockers like on the bauer
I do agree budget boards are awesome these days. I have several myself like the QK and zoom series boards. It still does not compare to my high end boards like a mammoth 75. Mr suit. Jelly epoch. Etc etc. the new ripple from cannonkeys looks awesome as well.
I'd just like to see 60-65% boards with more options for adding weights. A keyboard north of 2.5kg just feels right imo. Other than that I'm in no rush to buy the latest and greatest; fine tuning and trying out different switches/keycaps keeps my current collection fresh
I believe it's going to be a really long plateau we're in at, unless we see some outrageous designs for not much cost. All I see these days are box on a wedge and redundant side profiles. With mounting styles, I think it's all diminishing returns because it's always going to need foams which is so counter intuitive. If flexibility is the hardest to gauge properly, then tweak the visuals to be more appealing, whilst still having a reasonable typing feel.
I can't agree more but I think a rectangle has it's limits and that will be stopped by the value. Keyboards have become very expensive especially if they have LED screens etc and people are tight on cash worldwide atm due to inflation. That's why the mid-low end market surged, it was perfect timing.
The greatest days are behind us.. The pomp and circumstance that was the keyboard scene back in 2017 is gone. People complain now if the keyboard isnt cheap, and we live in a day where grown men are championing pink kitten laden keyboards from the furthest recesses of the cheapest corner of alibaba as "leet".. The hobby is dead.
I hope creators go back to desigining boards that don't require any kind of foam to sound good. I'm quite tired of the signature foam sound and any release fixing their half-assed designs with foam to make it sound tHoCcY.
there is so much you can get from a hobby that is centered around purchase something from the internet and fool yourself by calling it " you build it " when you have no input on the design whatsoever.

agreed. anti-mainstream is quite mainstream.
Nature is healing
For sure, and before foam was popular, rigid, flex free pcbs and aluminum cases were the 'endgame'

How do you produce those keyboards (especially the keycaps)?

very excited for the hira this year, hopefully this becomes the year of frls as seeing some new layouts come into focus is really fun.
I found out about the matrix 6xv 3.0 corsa after the GB was over... Looks like my type of keyboard, but I can only hope I come across it later.
At 2:56 on the Mercutio KB, what are these keycaps (retro Mac-Cursive condensed font), please?
They look like an AEK-inspired set in XDA profile! (Similar to the 2048 set designer by biip)
