Great reaction, welcome back. Yes this is a beautiful song and an incredible rendition here. You were wondering about the figures in white. I will repeat what I posted on another reaction to this a few days ago, I hope you don't mind. I do have a theory about the figures in white - they were providing some backing vocals in support of Moametal. We can have an educated guess at who they were, but we don't know for sure. In my mind the fact they are dressed in white is significant. BABYMETAL have dressed in white 3 times before this and each time was a significant turning point for them. First time they appeared in white was for the last 2 encore songs at Legend Z early in 2013. That was their last concert before they officially separated from their parent group Sakura Gakuin. Second time Yui and Moa started the Legend 1997 concert dressed in white and making an offering in a theatrical piece to the god of metal statue. Legend 1997 was Su-metal's 16th birthday concert but it was also the last stage in their separation and the whole concert told the tale of their and Su's transition from JPop Idols to becoming an independent band and Su giving up her former life to be reborn as a Metal Goddess. Third time was in the official mv for 'Karate' where they were conjuring up their inner demons to fight against. 'Karate' was the lead single in 2016 for their second album and that was a significant step away from the collection of new songs and singles they had released in Sakura Gakuin that had made up the first album towards their own new and more structured second album. The First Take video was the last one released by Su and Moa as a duo, the figures in white were there at another important change for BABYMETAL - the next video they released was another First Take one, but it was released after Momometal's reveal, so all three of them performed 'The One' unfinished version. 'The One' is a song for and dedicated to the BABYMETAL fans - also called The One of course. Did you get tickets to any of their US tour concerts?
@@Grington300 That’s another reason I love Babymetal’s presentation: I think they purposely create a bit of “convoluted-ness” to their lore, which allows open interpretation. And that makes the experience so much more fun!
Grington, Did you expect Momoko to make the impact she has made as a full member. I was surprised, especially by her "Death Growl" and I love the singing voice she's using. Read the it's her anime voice.
Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。In this first take version, the girls proved that they can do anything. They have forced people to headbang with their heavy music and sharp choreo. Now they can depict various images by just singing and project them into the listeners' brain to move people emotionally. Thank you BABYMETAL. And thank you Koba, the BM producer, for your serendipity. Some 14 years ago, you certainly discovered something amazing and sacred for us. Speaking of the three figures in white hood adding some background vocals, they are homage to BM's girlhood with original three girls.
To me, Su's voice is simply the most beautiful sound in the world. I have listened to this song so many times, and that line just before the chorus always gets me, every time. I have yet to make it through the song without tearing up.
The First Take gets me so much! Expect many many more reactions to those video.. my god! This here just feels so... happy and blessed. I get happy feelings of nostalgia with this one! Im gonna go listen again.. HAHA
Monochrome is definitely my favorite Babymetal song thus far. The 1st take version is soooo beautiful! Su-metal’s vocals is one of the few that always touches my soul. So happy I saw them live not long ago (even though I didn’t get Monochrome in the setlist 😢). Look forward to more Babymetal! 🤘🦊
A brief explanation, from 2018 (when Yui left due to health problems) until this version of the song it was just Su and Moa, shortly after this video was made the announcement that Momo was now going to be the third member to join Babymetal, so the 3 figures was a teaser of the announcement to come
Now it makes total sense! Thank you for this. I just seen another comment explaining, it would have taken me forever to figure that out hahaha I also noted that I'm gonna be sure to keep an eye out for Yui and Momo!
Greetings from Australia. As you may already have realised, The One (Babymetal tragics like myself) love watching others react to the Queen and her Princesses and their amazing array of songs. There are over 60 for you to react to and many with different versions and/or venues for you to choose from. If you choose to join The One, you won't be able to stop watching with a big smile on your face because that's what they do to you. Enjoy your ride. P.S If you like prog metal, can I suggest you watch Tales Of The Destinies which was performed live only once at the Tokyo Dome.
I will for sure check them out! Ive been on a quest as of late to really discover sound and also the story's behind that sound. It's also a way for me to discover who I am as an individual. I can't wait to see more babymetal and take a deeper listen. I find them so interesting and I need to know more! I'm glad you enjoyed my reaction! Many more to come! I have an endless list of music to watch and listen to :p
To my knowledge the 3 figures in white is a subtle way to announce that they were about to become a trio again, with this being their final official performance as a duo.. Their second “first take” performance is as a trio, with Momoko..
@ in 2017 Yui stopped performing due to an unknown medical condition, and officially left the band in late 2018.. They continued on as a duo in the hope she would one day return, during this time they had what they called the avengers.. 3 rotating dancers filling in the vacant position.. Over the years it became just one avenger, Momoko, who was finally announced as the official third member, MOMOMETAL, in April of last year.. BTW, she’s also the one responsible for the harsh vocals you’ve heard…
@@MRDARKTURKEY Ohhhhhhh! I had no idea! Well now! You have just fully blown my mind and now I will keep a good eye open for MOMO and YUI! Thank you so much for filling me in! I would have been so lost for so long ahhaha!
If you like a stripped back version of Su's vocals you should maybe check out Akatsuki (unfinished version) from the Legend 1997 concert, it's a piano ballad unfinished but a full metal song once complete. Even though she was 10 years younger her vocals were still great!
Monochrome (all 3 versions) is beautiful and meaningful (see the lyric video to maybe get an understanding....) and easily my fav. track now. Great reaction!!
Thank you so much for watching! I THINK Ive listened to the album version but its best I go back and get some more listens on this one. Gotta get on the other 2 versions! Its such a beautiful song :)
@@MasterGo89 Agreed - and for me one of their darker ones (the lyric video actually shocked me first time I saw it - I NEVER thought they'd do something like that) - but I LOVE those, they rarely do them (maybe kagerou, akatsuki unfinished (for me) and Rondo of Nightmare are all well up there for me.
@astrafaan oh very nice! I love it when an artist can change up. So many just stick to one thing. If an artist wants to grow you need more sounds. Just the same for the audience. Just need to explore sound and understand more what makes music so much deeper 🫲
Well as live as it was possible. At that time they were officially only a Duo but this was their first promise that they would soon be a Trio again. This is thevreason for the three Figures in bathrobes.
The 3 versions of Monochrome resonate deeply, yet differently. Lyric video is seen as a homage to Hiroshima WWII victims (Su-metal's from Hiroshima). Alas, it remains a sensitive topic (milked by the left & ring wings in Japan politics, as well as in both Koreas & China, let alone guilt Americans whose forefathers did the bombing). Both Su & Kobametal declined to acknowledge the reference, saying it was the MV director who chose the war visuals. First take version is seen as a tribute to their younger selves for enduring several years of online hectoring by metal elitists & contemptuous journalists after BM's audacious breakout at Sonisphere 2014 (when Su was 16 & Moa/Yui were 14). Like Road Of Resistance (2015) & Karate (2016), Monochrome First Take (2023) purportedly sought to address those hardships with class, with the MV motifs here (hooded figures, silently reassuring each other) reminiscent of those used in the Karate MV (where BM was depicted fighting "monsters" & had concluded thoughtfully with a twist ending). PIA Arena live version is seen as a paean to longtime fans who have accompanied BM over their career, & who stayed loyal during the hard times, especially 2018-2020 when Yui cryptically quit, guitarist Mikio tragically died, makeshift lineups with the Musclemetals, Chosen 7, Avengers; along with abrupt makeovers as their teenage years ended (jettisoning the red tutus, making wildly eclectic music that became more metal than kawaii). This segment has since become a live staple (during either Monochrome or Karate), when Su would ask the audience to wave their camera lights in celebration.
"Moa metal! Momo metal! Can you see it!?" - this is where the real magic begins. I think you touched upon on only half of why the PIA arena version is just so good. From a cinematic perspective you clearly see Moa and Su pulling in Momo to embrace them while they share the moment on the stage, viewing 13k people as the monochrome firework, illuminating the "sky" so colorfully. The reaction on their faces is magical, especially Momo's. It was that night she was introduced as Momo-metal, and it stands to reason she was still used to "just being a backup" dancer. The Japanese fandom can be a fickle bunch and are prone to reacting negatively, so that cultural aspect was most likely always taken into consideration in how Momo interacted with the other two in public, on stage, and was built in as muscle memory. The whole thing is unscripted and something that is near impossible to reproduce. Their hiatus, or being "sealed away" was their ragnarok. In a broad sense they have forged a new connection with not only the audience, but as a trio. Their morning has arrived and that moment illuminates the world in the rainbow colors. That whole performance really enshrines the general theme and message of the song, and that is exactly what makes it so powerful.
for REAL! You could hear a pin drop with those bad boys! Like I said, Im pretty sure my headphones are not even good enough for that. Im turning into a wine taster of music here hahah. I fully agree with you though, this song hits different!
