I'm from Salem, Oregon and had no idea about the flag change until it was mentioned in this video. Upon seeing the former flag, I'm surprised it took them that long.
The flag for England in the style of Wales being the dragon just coloured white is in reference to an old legend about two dragons who battle each other; a red dragon representing Wales and a white one representing England. This legend, and the fact that the red one defeats the white one and brings peace to Wales at the end, is why there’s a red dragon on the Welsh flag to begin with. Honestly, I think the white dragon being on the England variant is a pretty clever reference.
I think also the White Dragon was flown by the Anglo-Saxons at Hastings? I do like that it follows that the Red Dragon defeats the White, so England goes away and comes back with a lion! 😄
11:27 There's a very large Samoan population in NZ! Also, the Tino Rangatiratanga flag is used to represent Maori peoples (NZ's indigenous people) so that's an obvious giveaway to me, as a Kiwi. As for why there are so many Samoan flags... there was probably a rugby game going on and everyone was showing their support, lol (Or it was after the game and everyone was celebrating!)
Samoa made the finals in the rugby league world cup so a hell of a lot of samoan had their flags out, i saw plenty but i imagine this person was in auckland considering all the other flags or maybe wellington with the progress flags
I reckon both in NZ and Aus considering the diversity of flags while here in Samoa there were mostly Samoan Flags and a few Australian flags flown due to Samoa reaching the semi-final with Australia in the rugby world league back in December I believe. Much love to all the Pacific countries from Samoa. Yes, Australia and New Zealand are pacific islander too ;)
9:42 Inside the Brazilian stripe, the flag makers also decided to put phrases associated with the country in their native languages (such as Brazil's Order and Progress in Portuguese). With the languages that I know, China has "To serve the people", Japan has "Country of the Rising Sun", and the Republic of China has the Three Principles of the People by Sun Yatsen.
The one for South Korea says "To broadly benefit the human world", and is actually their educational motto. The one for North Korea says "Strong and Prosperous Nation", which no surprise relates to the Kim family, specifically Kim Jong-il's military policies. The one for Mongolia apparently translates to "Mongolian throughout", though it is apparently used by a nationalist group over there so...
