    Customers should be made aware of tip out nonsense which only exists in north america usa. wages should be paid by Management not by donations from customers. Sensible owners should pay Livable wages from cost of living. three times usual rent divided by 400 hrs per month

    I like tip pooling. It incentivizes the smallest possible, highest performing team. If you suck, and aren’t trying not to suck, you’re not gonna last. Everyone will bitch you into unemployment if you don’t pull your weight.

    I still dont get it so how exactly are tips going to effect my paycheck do the tips i earn throughout the pay period get deducted from my overall paycheck say for instance i make a 600 paycheck and make 500 in tips what will my paycheck look like?

    Here is my question, how do you calculate the total hourly wedge for workers in a tip pool in which employees have different points and work different hours? I am trying to figure out an easy way to do this for a pool that has close to 100 workers and that include bartender, servers, barbacks, bussers, and runners. I feel like I m missing a step. Is multiplying the actual hour worked by an employee by the point share they get would be correct? and then plug that number in in the formula (HRS worked X hourly wage)? For example, lets say I have bartender making 1 full point, servers making 0.9, barbacks making 0.8, bussers making 0.6, and runners making 0.5. Now my barback works 12 hours and my bartender 10, my server 8, my busser 9, and my runner 6. Please, walk me through this! Thank you!

      Hey Sara, I like what you're doing here, compensating for both hours worked and point-by-position system, but it is a very complicated concept. I'm sure there is a perfect formula for it, but I don't have it since I haven't run this before, but this is how you can work this. Hopefully you can follow along:
      Let's say $1,000 total was brought in for the night.
      Based on your example, there is a total of 45 hours worked.
      This means the normal hourly is 22.2 (1,000 ÷ 45 = 22.2).
      Without your point by position this is very easy to determine. Simply multiply 22.2 by the hours worked and that's how much money everyone made. But with a point system factored in, this doesn't work. Instead, we are going to determine the percentage of value for each position, then the percentage worked by each position, then we're going to take the average of those two and pay out each position. It looks like this:
      If you add up your point system by position, you get a total of 3.8 (1.0 + 0.9 + 0.8 + 0.6 + 0.5 = 3.8). Then if you divide each position number by 3.8, you get how much each position is worth, percentage-wise. So then each position is worth this much (by point-value):
      Bartenders = 26% (1.0 ÷ 3.8)
      Servers = 24% (0.9 ÷ 3.8)
      Barbacks = 21% (0.8 ÷ 3.8)
      Bussers = 16% (0.6 ÷ 3.8)
      Runners = 13% (0.5 ÷ 3.8)
      That will never change as long as the point systems remains the same. Next, for this night worked, we will take the percentage of hours worked for each position by dividing individual hours worked by total hours worked:
      Bartenders = 22% (10 ÷ 45)
      Servers = 18% (8 ÷ 45)
      Barbacks = 27% (12 ÷ 45)
      Bussers = 20% (9 ÷ 45)
      Runners = 13% (6 ÷ 45)
      Now we will take the two percentages and average them out and multiply that by $1,000 to determine how much each position made:
      Bartenders = 22% + 26% ÷ 2 = 24% (0.24 x $1,000 = $240)
      Servers = 18% + 24% ÷ 2 = 21% (0.21 x $1,000 = $210)
      Barbacks = 27% + 21% ÷ 2 = 24% (0.24 x $1,000 = $240)
      Bussers = 20% + 16% ÷ 2 = 18% (0.18 x $1,000 = $180)
      Runners = 13% + 13% ÷ 2 = 13% (0.24 x $1,000 = $130)
      This totals $1,000.

      I just bumped into your site my manager is on my pool and expediter splits with server evenly . We’re am I getting blown out of the water .

    Base tip is $2.30? In S.C and they share the sales total 3% I believe they should only share 3% of my tip not sales total should not be count .

    This is a total argument where I work. They pool the tips and us bartenders get screwed. We are the bread and butter and I have to pool my tips with the cooks and hosts. Even if my tipping bar patron does not order food or use host I am still suppose to let go 50%m of my tips to the others.

      It may be illegal in your state for your employer to force you to tip out the cooks. What state are you in?

    While Danny Meyer's failed experiment did eliminate tipping, attributing its failure to no tipping is a mistake. His goal was to reduce pay disparity between occupations. Not so servers and hosts made the same amount, but closer to the same amount. Server and bartender net income dropped 15%-20% compared to previous income and to what they could earn at neighboring restaurants, and they never recovered from the exodus of long-time staff. He just paid them too little. It's trivially simple to pay everyone the same or more equal net income whether through tip pooling, or fixed wages without tips. The biggest challenge with no-tipping models is customer acceptance of 20% higher menu prices, or 20% service charges, if a restaurant wants to replace tip income with equal non-tip income.

    I got asked in a short 10 minutes "pre-interview" how much money I wanted to earn. I didn't get to the interview. It feels like they were screening to interview the lowest "bidder". Is this common practice in interviews for bartenders?

    What is the bussers make the full $15.00 an hour in new york, would you say servers should still tip them 10%? Thats just not fair.

    nobody should be paid less than fast food wage after both tip outs tip pools and income taxes are paid

    I don’t think tip pooling is a good idea. Let’s say you’re pooling tips with 5 people. If you work hard and earn an extra $40 in tips, you only end up making an extra $8. Tip pooling doesn’t give an individual employee much incentive to go above and beyond. If everyone is in direct control of how much they can make, they’re gonna strive to do better.

      Not a bad point Brain Dead. And as I mention in the video, when you're dealing with someone who doesn't pull their weight, that's extremely frustrating. However, there is a synergy that comes with teamwork that produces far better results than working as an individual. This is universally true, not just in this case. In addition, teamwork builds camaraderie and a sense of culture that can't be replaced. With that said, I think you do have a valid point.

    Tipping out is a scam. Most money I ever made was $100 in 12 hours as a server busting my ass. Moved over to host made $120-150 daily for a 6-8 hour shift to do absolutely nothing thanks to the tip outs from the waiters. SCAM SCAM SCAM

    Tip pooling is a just scam in favor of the restaurant owner and cheats everyone else that works for their tips. If you can't afford to pay your employees at least minimum wage you shouldn't run a business

      I believe you're talking about the tip credit John. Tip pooling has nothing to do with favoring the owner whatsoever.
