    Ok wow, i'm not going to giveaway the results, but i actually got 2 wrong (rare for me). And this is tricky, because i have a 1073 clone and on some material it's warmer than plugins, other times it loses a bit of low end but tightens up the sound and gives it clarity. Obviously this doesn't make sense. But i suspect it has something to do with stereo vs mono processing. Let me explain.
    What i always hear from plugins on stereo processing, is a compacting of elements into a narrow centre image (i hate it). The hardware as demonstrated here has a bit of width to the centre image, the bass fits nicely with and around the drums, it also grooves nicely for some odd reason.
    But it also has a bit of warmth and sparkle (harmonics and variance likely) when doing stereo. The entire spatialisation is better on the hardware.
    Now on the single channel processing, we don't have this same enhancement from the hardware. It does its thing of adding some richness, but nothing in the spatialisation department (lets say depth for example).
    I picked the warmer example as the hardware on a single channel example, but it was the plugin ! The hardware on single channel processing is as i said, losing a bit of low end but tightening and adding nice harmonic richness. So my guess is that when hardware does stereo processing, the combining of the two channels is creating psychoacoustic effects related to subtle modulation of phase and delay, especially with the added harmonics thrown into it.
    Also, i preferred the overdrive on the plugin ! Shocker. It sounded thick without adding any higher frequency distortion, which is surprising, but i'd need to hear the original unprocessed bass to hear what's actually being done to it. It's because i don't like the sound of that particular distortion the hardware was doing on bass when listening in solo, but i bet it makes it fit well into a mix.
    Anyway, thanks again for doing this Thomas, neatly done :) Oh before i forget, as far as EQ'ing, the plugin appeared to be right on. Compliments to that ! EQ is one thing dsp can get close on. Just need to get around this spatialisation issue.

      yea that's right. Hardwares are very accurate and precise on stereo width but the digital ones sounds like pushing them to the center a little bit, that's the common flaw of plugins. I used to think it's the reason of two hardware's settings are not exactly same (even "the same" there probably bias in circuits exists) but I'm not quite sure about this. I tried this on plugin, split the signal into two channels, load same plugins and applied a little difference and it sounds closer to hardware.
      however the plugins are really not that good at creating a tight low end...

    • @bontempo1271
      @bontempo1271 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ordinarymonster1187 Glad you confirmed the same observation. Yes splitting the plugin onto Left and Right channels helps, but not the same spatial effect.
      I'm glad that at least the DAW stereo mixbus is not collapsing the image from a hardware print. So i don't think digital is the problem. (whether or not a pure analogue chain is better than a digital mixbus is less a priority than preventing this spatial collapse from plugins).
      Regarding tight low end, i think this is less of an issue with EQ, but a clear difference with compression, and i think it is to do with the way the same circuit components handle different frequencies.
      I've found that using a high pass sidechain filter on a plugin compressor can bring you closer to that low end heft of hardware, but that's not actually the same thing as being a component induced variation.

    • @1erwayne
      @1erwayne 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      100% agree @bontempo! As someone who has tons of hardware, many times software works better. I hate stereo tracks, ones that come out the vst instrument or is given to me in stereo. Normally I split it into mono and make my own stereo track , if needed, by creating or putting it in a space custom for the track. I stopped doing these tests because as obvious it SEEMS to be in solo, often times not so much when you take solo off and play it with the other tracks. Hofa's Blind Test plugin will humble you quickly!!

    Wow, the hardware is so much fatter in the low end on the D&B. Gives instant vibes. The distortion is also interesting. It sound like they put an alias filter in the plugin which takes away the whole experience.

    Drum en bass no processing (couldn't tell the difference)
    Dnb processed (Couldn't really tell the difference)
    When I found out the truth, I wasn't surprised at the following
    Bass overdrive (neve hardware superior - was fuller, rounder, more 3 dimensional when pushing the real analog circuits)
    Guitar (neve hardware superior- can anyone deny neve when it comes to mids that are 3 dimensional?)
    Vocals (neve hardware superior - again, with the mids and analog circuits how well they pick up the human voice)
    I wouldn't say it was even close for the last 3...it's what you pay for and why it's worth it if you recording analog instruments and the human voice

    • @thomasvopstal
      @thomasvopstal  ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re not exactly the same in terms of electronics. The classic neve modules are still being handwired where the 1073n is not. Usually that can mean it doesn’t sound as good. I haven’t had the chance to directly compare the two, so i can’t tell you if that’s the case

  • @Tryggvasson
    @Tryggvasson ปีที่แล้ว

    without checking the answer - no discord account - i could bet b is the hardware, based on the first set of files. i like lindell plugins, but the difference is big. across 20 tracks it would make a tremendous difference. the plugin ( if i'm not mistaken) is more bloated, honkier, grainier in the highs, less bright, and not as weighty in the bass. on the other hand, thinking about this description, i think it can all be summed up by bloatware in the low mids - cutting those out would bring forward the low end, and the top, as well. on the other hand, as someone pointed out in the comments, it depends a lot on the oversampling settings. the right oversampling rate would cut exactly that low mid overprojection. and, by the screen graphics, the plugin seemed to have the eq engaged, in the first test, while the hardware module didn't. that also makes a difference.
