Great talk by a very knowledgeable, experienced, studied, and articulate sober member of AA. Everyone needs to hear him and similar speakers! Thanks

Step takers make it. Meetings will not keep you sober. The vital spiritual experience dr silkworth talks about in the doctors opinion happens “as the result of these steps”. Not as the result of the fellowship or anything else. Not knocking meetings but the fellowship is not the program. The program is the 1st 164 pages of the big book and the 12 steps. The program will get and keep you sober. The fellowship is a place where the newcomer can identify with the problem and a place where the old timer can carry the message. What message? That the “program” aka the 12 steps, work.

To be fair the steps will get you sober, working with others will keep you sober.

A good home group's members will not stop asking if the new person has a sponsor, a commitment and is doing the steps. Meetings can be an early lifeline to finding a solid home group.

But meetings alone are not enough to represent the solution of recovery
