- New York Magazine’s Senior Art Critic Jerry Saltz rarely misses a gallery or museum opening. With a stroke of a pen, he can make or destroy a new artist. Known as the ”people’s critic,” he tells Jim Zirin what he likes, and what he detests about the art world, which he sees as increasingly obsessed with money. But do we need critics to tell us what art is good?

The best speaker on the art world their is. He's smart enough to see the big picture.
This is a great conversation, thank you for making it
Good to hear these positions again so well laid out. Thank you for your work Jerry Saltz.
Loved to hear that :)
This was very enjoyable to hear thoughts of a contemporary 'insider.' Some really great stuff--- on the realities surrounding art.
Mega dealers don’t really seem like they admire the artists they represent. Nor do they appear to like art in general. They could be stock brokers.
I like this man. Very real and open . . .
The David Hockney painting of the swimming pool completely captures the Zeitgeist of the Hollywood Hills.
But man can the guy paint.
Saltz is the real NY “Jerry”. Dude is real, love it or hate it.
Rockwell was an illustrator. Nothin’ wrong with that.
I agree!
He’s getting a lot of backlash for not punching down. I did like his last response. He’s like.. I don’t know why you need me…but you do
He's insufferable
I enjoyed this discussion and was surprised you do not collect art. What is on your walls? The process is the heart of the artist.
Clement Greenberg had been a shoe salesman
And quite a creep.
Who’s here for online school
I’m not happy with the way he talks about art, not everything is art. And there’s a good reason why art it’s important, and why we need good art critics. His response I DONT KNOW “ it’s the answer of someone for me is not really well educated. He needs to read more.
The host is a little bit limited mind! Sorry!
Thing is I don't care about art business or art world u guys just trying to tell me don't try to much u can't sell anything so it's not you or them deside. And u block my all ways I can't even take my revenge from u all but insha ALLAH one and only GOD will do good for me and justice will be served soon insha ALLAH.
The interviewer. 🤦♂

I like that he talks about the gobbledygook of art critics when they talk about some artist’s work. I will seek out some of his critiques.
