    This helped me a lot. I'm 52 and was not feeling optimistic about retirement. I just went and asked if I was contributing the most to my 401k and yesterday I opened a Roth IRA. Now focusing on paying off debt. Thank you and keep the good info coming!

    I'm not kidding when I say this; You guys offer more value on your channel than any other channel I've seen! I'm blown away by how clearly you explain great financial advice! Thank you. I am a full-time RVer. My wife and I have been on the road for about 1.5 years. I do a little work online with Kindle Books and web design, as well as working at the resorts where we stay. We're able to live "rent free" for working at the resorts, but we still have a couple of credit card payments and a payment on our RV. Do you have some good side-hustle ideas for people like us, who don't live a stable life in a brick and mortar home? Thanks so much :)

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Sounds like you are living the dream! RVing is something we talk about all the time. We are so jealous :-) As far as side hustles check out our side hustles videos. We talk about a couple of digital nomad type of hustles in those videos but the emphasis has not been on what would suit your traveling lifestyle. But I think we can develop a side hustle video that would be perfect for you. And since we've been considering traveling full-time it will be very helpful for us as well. We're so EXCITED! Please stay tuned...

      @@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism You are way off target, but thanks for your attempt to help. Together, the wife and I make very good money working at the resorts. We don't have a mortgage payment, and utilities don't cost us a penny. We have perks with the job we used to dream about. I'm always looking for more side-hustles and never stated I was broke, nor heading in that direction. Actually, I found your reply a bit condescending and presumptuous. Nevertheless, good luck to you and yours!

      @@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism I had to remove my last reply to you, because it might have come across as rude. You simply don't understand a thing I've said; the resort IS the RV park. Purchasing my Class A motorhome was the best decision I've ever made... best investment because we live full-time in places we would have never had the chance to visit if we worked full-time. I don't do anything like "the other guy". CC debt has built my credit score higher than it has ever been for me. Again, thank you and good luck with your future. You just don't understand mine. :)

    I started late but am making great progress over the past 5 years using many of the ideas you've suggested...two more to think about...if you're divorced but had been married more than 10 years the income of your ex spouse will be considered for your SSI...if they made more than you your benefits will be higher without effecting theirs...and the BIG ONE...get and keep yourself as healthy as possible...it will not only add to the quality of your life but save you money...get all the tests recommended for your age group before you retire while you have insurance...especially the colonoscopy and bone density..stop smoking...I work in the medical field and see what procrastination and denial do to the lives of patients as they get older...thank for another great video

    I already told my son I am NOT pulling from retirement for his education. I also told him his grades, test scores, and community involvement were the currency to his education. But I also told him he could take a gap year if needed and work on his desired field to see if it is what he really wants to do, while saving for college (I don't want him to have student loans like myself) if he decides to go. Otherwise, he better have a solid business plan or plan to take up a trade which often pay more than a bachelor's degree anyway....

      Have him look into free trade programs available to high school students as well if that is interest. Where I live high school students can attend a trade school for free while enrolled at their high school. Then when they graduate they have a diploma and certification in a trade field.
      Also have him consider community college if he has high grades. My best friend got her associates for free since she graduated in the top 20% of our class. Can’t beat free!!!

    Great video! I’m behind since I took out my 401k twice being a single mom and not getting child support. So now I’m playing catch up. I’m put 9% in my 401k and my company matches 6% and I put 5% in my company shares and I invest 100.00 a month in dividend stocks monthly. I’m currently saving to pay off my car lease is 2021 and I’m working on my 3 month emergency fund. So I’m saving 1000 a month for those 2 things. Any advice? Another good argument for parents to pay for their retirement first rather than their child's student loans is to not be a "burden" (for lack of a better term) for their kids later in life.
    As a young professional (and in student debt), I would much prefer the piece of mind of having my parents sustain-ably supporting themselves, than the "gift" of having my student loans paid for.

      Vanguard has low expense ratios on their target date funds! But, you can also check out Fidelity and Charles Schwab!

    Thank you for your videos & advice! Saving and budgeting used to be something I would always say "I'm bad at" - obviously just an excuse. With your positive and informational videos, I now can say "I'm learning how to be better". It's never too late to make the financial changes we want to see in our lives.
    If I want to track my budget (investments, savings, debt reduction, expenses, etc) in an app so I can update it more easily, what app would you suggest?

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you and congrats on starting your journey! The Mint App is a great. We've used it for years and its been really easy to use. Check it out and let us know what you think. Thanks again! We are so glad to be on the journey with you!

      @@OurRichJourney Thank you for your suggestion, I'll try it out! Do you have any concerns or hesitations with connecting such apps to your online banking or investment accounts?

    • @ATimeToBe
      @ATimeToBe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OurRichJourney I've been using the Mint app since you suggested it and I'm really loving it! I like how it gives me a snapshot of everything I have - investments, bank accounts, credit cards, etc. I get to see my overall financial health in one location, helping me keep a better eye on it all. I've also been enjoying the goal setting feature; now savings is like a game and I see if I can beat the monthly amount to get to my end goal faster. Since it's a Intuit product and I already use TurboTax, I feel safer with Mint than with competitor apps. Thanks for you help! :)

    If divorced, and part of your settlement was half of you ex spouses pension, check to see when you can start collecting that pension. On some pensions you are eligible for your part of the pension as soon as the ex spouse starts taking their pension...it’s not necessarily when you retire or at a certain age.

    It’s a shame the calculator only works if you have a US address. I couldn’t get past the first question! The rest of your presentation is also geared to citizens of the US (we don’t have the same plans in Canada) but at least with the calculator it should fundamentally work the same in any country/currency... if you know what you need.

    Retirement funded > paying for kids college isn’t an emotional debate but a numerical one.
    If you are financially independent in retirement you can afford to help your kids financially for the rest of their lives. If you don’t take advantage of compound interest and blow all your savings on kids education, they’ll always be financially taking care of you. You can still pay off a big chunk of their loans. Just do so after you’ve made at least some of that money in interest (plus won’t have to be a financial burden to them).
    While you’re at it, downsize now. Having to go through a million and one old things after your parents pass can be a mountain of a burden in itself.
