I just discovered you today, December 1, and is there anything better than finding a kindred spirit? I miss my post-grad days so much, and your videos are bringing that energy back to me! So grateful. Also, a friend of mine who knows ALL about this told me recently… trust the algorithm. Just make your authentic content and it will always (re)connect you to your people.
I absolutely love that you found me through my Kundera video! (It was always a video that I knew wouldn't be super popular, but it was one that I wanted to create as a general resource, so it's especially cool that it's found some kindred spirits who are genuinely interested in that kind of book discussion)
I am not joking when I say, pretty much every day that I check TH-cam, I wonder if Jennifer is back. So, it brought me a sense of true, lovely, full happiness to see the pretty colors in the thumbnail in the top left-hand corner of my feed. Fastest click in the west. I'm so terribly delighted more videos will be coming. I hope your plans to make the channel grow go well, you've always deserved it. I appreciate the camera and the sound upgrade, though as you say the main thing is the content. I hope things are well with you, and I'm glad to hear you're feeling "more centered" than before. I hope you push through the oncoming "algorithmic disaster" to your audience, some of us aren't going anywhere regardless of the channel name. And, hopefully, some are out there undiscovered as of yet. Sending all my fondness and respect. MISSED YOU!
Haha I WISH that were true but I think the fact that I'm de-monetized right now will also work against me in that department (I don't have enough watch hours over the last 365 days, or whatever their new policy is). I'm guessing TH-cam isn't as big on showing videos without ads to people 😅 But I'm happy to fight against the current!
I came after seeing your comment about the book "Zahrada" on goodreads (one of the few in English and with many followers which caught my attention) and I'm glad I stumbled upon this big comeback :))
I absolutely love that this is how you found me. (Side note, but what a completely random book to be my first full-length book in Czech! There aren't too many Czech books out there about priests, I can tell you that)
Thrilled whoever a video arrives from you. I loved the brain furniture analogy, I love that. Also, I have decided... screw the algorithm. I'm excited for the videos to come.
For real though, what are us old hands to do other than keep soldiering on against the pitiless current of the algorithm? It's so nice to see you in these parts Simon, hope you're doing well 🩵
Oh and I would love to see We do not part featured, Han Kang's last which has haunted me since I was able to read it in French. It's a piece of the sky to me. So there's my guess, or my vote really!
Stumbled across this video having not know your channel before but based on where you want to take it I am looking forward to tuning in. Thank you algorithm!
Thank you so much, this is the nicest description ever. (And I know a bunch of super bright people who are really struggling with their MAs and PhDs--it's just a lot, especially if there are other things going on in your life, which there usually are. I hope if and when you come to the finish line that you feel proud of everything it took for you to get there)
@@InsertLiteraryPunHere Thank you so much for this response. It made me tear up a bit because everyhting you said rings very true. Feeling very seen. Excited for your new videos!
Thank you! Tokarczuk still has a few books that are slated to come out in English translation, so I'm waiting on those to really dig into her work. But yes, this is a very good guess on your part
Hi, I’m a newcomer. I’m a Scot in Belgium but when I got back from a weekend in Prague, the algorithm wanted me to watch your new Kundera video. Now I’m going to be hoping for more Central European stuff but have a general good impression and open to something different too but yeah Czech stuff please :)
Over the moon! Thank you for sticking with us and I really appreciate the behind the scenes time needed in order to put us through sharp and crisp content every time! I had sent a small package your way years back containing among others Tarjei Vesaas's the Birds, and you had so wonderfully and thoughtfully replied with your own, and even though I'm usually too shy for comments, your videos have been meaningful and my reading has evolved alongside yours so here for as long as you'll want us.
If you look carefully in the background of this video, you might be able to spot that exact copy of The Birds that you sent me years ago! It's the one with the black and teal spine three books down! ❤️
So happy to see you're coming back...again, Jen! Yay...more Central and Eastern Europe and non-fiction content! It would be great to hear how your language studies are going, as well, if that's something you still want to share. I used to love your vlogs around NYC bookstores, going to cafes and studying...🤗
I've always loved your takes on Eastern European literature and books in general and I can't wait to hear more! You seem so confident in your work, I'm so excited to see what you've come up with!
Ooooo a starter kit sounds wonderful. Can’t wait to see all your upcoming videos! Yours is one of the first channels I ever watched, and it’s always fun to see you pop up. I love your chatty yet intelligent “talking head” style. ❤
It's wonderful to see you again! I noticed your channel's name change yesterday and was hoping it meant you intended to come back at some point in the future. Huzzah!
Oh YAY!!! I can't wait to see where your channel goes. This is fabulous news - I always love your thoughtful discussions and I am really looking forward to what the next year has in store. Welcome back!
looking forward to your upcoming vidoes !! as someone who rewatchs ur videos bc i love them and a lot of how u talk about books / the kind of books u read, i am sooo ready for ur return!! :)
Sounds like an amazing and exciting time for you. Guesses: Classic Author: George Eliot, Anthony Trollope Nonfiction: Prairie Fires, Border, The Paying Guests, Cleopatra Nobel Prize Winner: Coetzee
Welcome back this such good news, it’s been so ions I forgotten I missed you. Can’t wait till the the next one. Olga Tokarczuk is my guess for highlighted author. ( Sine the recent release)
Great to see you, Jen! My book club just read Abigail by Magda Szabo recently which I purchased years ago at your recommendation so you've been on my mind! Looking forward to your new videos, I imagine the Nobel Prize winner video will be on Olga Tokarczuk but would be happy to hear your thoughts on any contemporary winners.
Tokarczuk is a great guess, but she has so many books coming out in English over the next few years that I'm holding off for now! (Also looove that you and your book club read Abigail 💙)
I've followed for a few years and always get excited when you drop a new video. Your analysis of books is so insightful , and your tastes have challenged me over the years to broaden my own reading. I can't wait to see what you come out with next! Happy to have you back!
This is honestly so nice, thank you! The new videos are still mostly just my face talking about books :) (my editing skills don't allow for too much more than that, lulz)
This is the best thing that's happened to me in November! November has been a dumpster fire, so that wasn't exactly hard, but I'm so happy you will be back.
Oh I'm so glad! I'm guessing the nonfiction videos won't be as popular in general but I can't help myself, I really want to have those conversations with other nonfiction readers
@ i read 100% non-fiction only and struggle to find content to enjoy online. I am super ready for those videos of yours♥️. Currently reading orphans of the empire printed in Australia. The secret child migration of kids sold into slavery from britain to australia and their awful situations that have been covered up. So tragic! Its a brick over 800 pages. I read mother teresa and the challenger tragedy recently My next book will be ishi the last wild Native american to roam the plains and his capture😢
So glad you’re back! I’ve always loved your approachable, intellectual videos. I’m looking forward to watching and adding books to my TBR. I hope your channel meets with the success you so richly deserve!
It's so lovely that you phrased it that way, because the two words I always keep in my head when I'm prepping a video are "rigorous and approachable" 😊
This was the best news I’ve had today! You were one of the first channels I ever subscribed to and have been an important influence on how I read so it’s great to hear you have more videos coming up and I am really looking forward to watching them. The worst books you’ve read on TH-cam should be a laugh and will probably take us all back to a certain Women’s Prize list - Eleanor Oliphant maybe? If you are missing being given homework I’m sure we can send you some assignments ❤
In August I read Anne Applebaum’s Red Famine right after The Grapes of Wrath. The two read profoundly together. If only Okies and Kulaks had space to find Common Cause in the face of overlapping oppression, the last 105 years could have meandered so differently. Gratitude for getting Red Famine on my radar.
Round about the time I start wondering what ever happened to you, you pop back up in my subscription list. Always good to see/hear from you again. You've made some of my favorite book content, so can't wait to see what you do next now that you're past your grad school era. (congrats, again. it's a big deal)
Thank you; I'm struggling a bit in the immediate post-grad period (pretty common I think), so it is nice to remind myself that at least I accomplished something this year 😅

Hoorah - glad you’re back, and always lovely to see you 🎉
You never know, the algorithm might be kind and blow up one of the new videos 😂 it works in mysterious ways
Haha I WISH that were true but I think the fact that I'm de-monetized right now will also work against me in that department (I don't have enough watch hours over the last 365 days, or whatever their new policy is). The most eloquent booktuber has returned!!
Exciting! 🎉 I am not new, I am one of these people you mentioned at the start ❤

I'm grateful to the algorithm and its inscrutable magic for bringing you here!
The algorithm knows that we love you and wait for your reviews for years if we have to! Welcome back, I'm so happy for me😂
So glad to see your face again, it feels like meeting an old friend after a long time.

Loved ur old no fuss style... but look forward to your new phase. Always loved ur reading thoughts
I really appreciate that! And trust me, my editing abilities don't allow me to add much more than minimal fuss
i'm so happy you're back! And even happier to hear that yt stlll brings you joy. Hope the Nobel prize author is Olga Tokarczuk!
