  • A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's day evening, September 21st 1890.
Here Spurgeon deals especially with young converts. He shows that Satan uses great energy and zeal to re-capture them, and restore their love of sin. In the sermon, Spurgeon shows multiple remedies for this call to return to Egypt, and to spiritual slavery.

I am a widow and have no fellowship now but these messages from Spurgeon are such an encouragement and a great blessing.Ask God to show you if He’s shutting the door at your present church. He will be your guide and feed you as He did in the Wilderness for me. Take your peace that passes all understanding. Amen

Thank you. I've been listening for 2 years and am gaining the courage to leave the arminian church I have been in for almost 20 years. I have no local church or fellowship, so I feel like Spurgeon is my pastor and almost every time you post a new sermon, it's exactly what I need. Please pray for me as I still have many questions, and sometimes I tremble thinking I'm going to be deceived.

Thank you for the text. I know Spurgeon believed strongly in face-to-face fellowship as a means of encouragement and strengthening. I hope you find somewhere soon.

In prayers sister..keep looking, as it is seemingly pretty hard to find a congregation that thrives on God's Word..but we have to continue to stay entrenched in His word and our God and Savior Christ Jesus will guide us.
It is continual..faith to faith. By being engulfed in His word and listening to teachers/preachers by whatever manner(in person, radio, internet), the truth will set you free....and keep Spurgeon sermons towards top of the list.

The Lord who brought you here will see to it that you are in his perfect peace in every situation. He will guide you in finding a community close to home. In the meantime, We your brothers and sisters are praying for you, that in a land of a Christian wilderness, you will find an oasis of the Lord Jehovah's providence!

Remember the two great commandments. I read each day a Psalm and a Proverb and today Feb. 1 so here an excerpt of Barnes commentary.
      Psalm 31:24
Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
Be of good courage - See a similar exhortation at the close of a psalm, in Psalm 27:14. Compare the notes at that verse. As the result of all his own experience of the goodness of God, and of His gracious interposition in the time of danger, the psalmist exhorts others to be encouraged, and to feel assured that God would not leave or forsake them.
And he shall strengthen your heart - He will animate you; he will enable you to meet trial and opposition; he will keep you from becoming faint and disheartened.

This teaching delivered 21Sept. 1890 and now reminds me of his teaching 'When Satan Uses Saints', which I intend to listen to again. It seems possible the way Spurgeon tried living as a 'dedicated' follower of 'our' Lord was not necessarily 'appreciated' in his day and from my experience with preachers of today it seems he is more often than not spoken of with a sense of 'envy' rather than given what seems to me should be real appreciation for his work as some of the most useful and to be considered writing of modern times.

    1 John 3:1-3
3 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

An aside regarding Spurgeon's legacy. If correct, why did much, if not all of Spurgeon's work become housed at the Spurgeon Center in Kansas City, Missouri? Is this another sign of the times that people today are more and more contemptuous of Gods' work. Someone who's life work was as a 'not blind' guide seemingly treated quite shabbily for a few dollars? But here in the U.S.A. we might say Great Britain's loss is our gain.
