Thanks for sharing this very interesting video. I came across a HUGE prairie rattler at Mt. Sunflower in Kansas in 2005. It was near sunset in September and I had never seen one there before at the highest point in Kansas on the prairie. It never rattled at me but it did hiss as it was coiled to defend itself. I kept my distance from it while taking some photos with my zoom lens. I was in its territory and respected it. It left me alone and I left it alone as it eventually went on its way to do some night time hunting.

@@user-ov6ny3uc3l Thanks for your reply. It is APPALLING to see some idiots on TH-cam messing with rattlesnakes for laughs........until they get bitten! Like I said, I was in the rattler's territory and I respected that and the snake left me alone. But I will admit that it still scared the hell out of me to see a HUGE rattler out in the open and close to me. That was a first! 😳 But I kept my distance and the rattler knew I meant it no harm.

I really, really like the fact that you're giving this beautiful animal the needed respect and not handling the snake bare-handed. The thing that ALWAYS annoyed me about most venomous snake related vids were those guys clowning around them, waving their hands and diving to get a grip of the poor reptile. This dude seemed quite chilled and looked like he didn't really mind you picking him up lol. Good job!

I rarely use a snake hook to handle venomous snakes generally because I hate dragging them around. To tell you the truth, i prefer to handle them gently with bare hands and a stick to support their weight. If you're gentle, many snakes don't mind that much and it shows people that they aren't out to get you. It's a gamble, but i respect the matador who enters the ring more than a sniper in a blind. Good to see you on this new channel! We still have your picture on the wall.

I never handled a venomous snake before! What do you think about the snake-handling we see in tv? I mean, I always thought those guys' movements are exagerrated (or they were just shitting their pants in fear, I would be scared lol). You look chilled and calm, looking forward to see more vids!

Some of the guys on TV know their stuff, but most don't. Steve Irwin is my all-time hero. He got in the ring with the bull. TV producers hire guys that are energetic and exaggerated to keep people's attention.

+Wild Snakes I ran into a HUGE prairie rattler at Mt. Sunflower in Kansas (about a 1/2 mile east of the Colorado border) at sunset 10 years ago and it scared the hell out of me!!! Not sure who was more afraid: the rattler or me! Anyhow, the snake did NOT rattle when it saw me but for some strange reason, it only hissed. Anyhow, eventually, it went on its way for some good night time hunting on the Kansas prairie and I got into my rental car and took off. And I have photos of this rattler to remember the evening but of course, I kept my distance and used the zoom lens. Not a place to get bitten since the closest hospital is about 20 miles away on the dirt roads.

A few years ago a girl in Alberta at the Drumheller Tyrell Museum of Dinosaurs was bit by one in the parking lot as it was under their car, rushed to hospital via STARS air ambulance to Calgary, she survived cause they got her to the ER in time.

WOW, glad she was ok. Poor girl! I had a HUGE prairie rattler coiled under my rental car at Mt. Sunflower in Kansas in 2005. (See my post above.) It saw me and I saw it and it was only protecting itself. Scared the hell out of me and I left it alone. Eventually, it left the area to do some hunting at night and I left the area after that too close of an encounter. (I had been there MANY times at sunset and NEVER saw a rattler until that evening.)

They do, but just barely, and I don't expect they'll be here for a lot longer. Their habitat is an ever-shrinking zone of private grassland that cattle are destroying.
If you ever want an objective advisor or fact checker on the rattlesnake video series, let me know. Looking forward to more!

Nice! Gorgeous animal. Haven't they started evolving neurotoxins in addition to the normal hemotoxins in some parts of their range? (Sort of like the Southern Pacifics have?)

I have seen what I think are western diamondback rattlesnakes lately that have black and white bands just before the rattle. What is puzzling is their color. They are brown with the typical darker markings instead of black and silver. It was suggested they were prairie rattle snakes. We do have black tail rattle snakes, but the black band seems much wider and more prominent than the prairie rattle snake. Wish I had an experienced herpitologist to identify them.
