Franklly, I think you are one of the most thoughtful and sensitive music reviewers online. I'm 72, but always appreciate your reactions. Keep it going, man!
I know that Barry got most of the attention and praise in the group mainly for his falsetto and I understand that but this vocal by Robin is second to none in my humble opinion.
Robin's voice is vulnerable, & heartbreaking on it's own, so when he sings something sad, I always start crying.......he was one of those unique voices, that can literally pierce your soul 💖💖💖
I saw the Bee Gees in Perth Western Australia in the mid 70's. When Robin sang this song as he sang higher at the end he nearly lifted the roof off the stadium and the standing ovation was incredible. Such a powerful voice that cannot be heard on record, cd or dvd. Also saw him during his solo tour.
Your reaction was beautiful. Robin has the affect on so many. He didn't realize he was as popular as his brother. He was tormented internally I think. You can see that with the songs he writes. But his voice is the most beautiful I've ever heard. Thanks for the awesome reactions. Keep it up.
The Bee Gees actually began their careers in Australia, where they lived for many years when very young. Their first number 1, Spicks and Specks was in Australia. That would be the reason for the first two albums being released in Australia. I have been a Bee Gees fan since they started in Australia. Robin Gibb had one of the finest voices of his generation, imo. It is glorious.
@Top500Songs-zo1ffCompletely agree as I've always preferred Barry's voice over a quivering vibrato. Barry's voice was suited to any type of musical genre and he could sing anything & with anyone.🎼
Robin’s voice always gets me, especially in their song For Whom the Bell Tolls (1993) That song made me weep the first time I heard it. Definitely do more Robin lead songs. Maurice also had a very beautiful and unique voice and sang lead on some great songs too. Definitely worth checking out ❤
If you watch them do Nights on Broadway on The Midnight Special, Maurice sings in falsetto at the end, whereas Barry sings throughout with his chest voice. Amazing. They were all so versatile in their talents.
Robin's voice is 1 in a million. A later song that highlights Barry and Robin's voices is For Whom the Bell Tolls. It's been said that the Bee Gees don't write lyrics, they write emotions. You are a wonderful and thoughtful reactor. Great work
Love the Bee Gees' early music especially 60's-70's. You are hearing Robin Gibb's voice in this song "I Started A Joke" from 1968. He also sang lead on "Massachusetts", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" etc. Some of their other early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", ""Lonely Days", "Melody Fair", "First Of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.
❤"And The Sun Will Shine" has a similar effect on me, as yours was to "I Started A Joke"❤ ...it's just _the_ most intense feeling, yet difficult to describe. Robin Gibb was _always_ my favourite 'BeeGee' right from the start and I felt so sorry for him (and Barry etc) when Andy died, and even more so when Maurice - his twin brother - younger than Robin by 30 minutes - died after so short an illness, albeit that Maurice suffered intense abdominal pain prior to his death... Awful.😢 Then, Robin... I was so sad, and poor Barry, his sister and all of the Gibb children... Condolences to all who grieve. 🌺 Rest In Peace Andy Gibb, Maurice Gibb & Robin Gibb (& their parents, too).🌺
Whenever I hear this song...I am reminded of how it might be a song of someone spiraling into depression. That is how I see this song. It is incredibly deep and beautiful...and SAD AND HELPLESS at the same time. Robin's voice is unique and I have never heard anyone else sound like HIM...in my 62 yrs on this Planet. The BeeGees will always be remembered fondly and with a ton of love and respect for their work...and their contributions to music. They have written songs for other artists...I believe.
❤Beautiful reaction. Robin also leads off How Can You Mend A Broken Heart💔 and he was lead on the amazing For Whom The Bell Tolls. His vibrato is so unique.
I've noted for awhile , that overlooking Robin , and his notable solo s ......was / is a mistake . This tune , I Started a Joke , is actually my favorite , of all BeeGee s songs . Robin also does a terrific solo of . : Massachusetts ".Thanx for this reaction .
Wasn't that simply amazing? This was my first real exposure to the Bee Gees-- Me, a 19 year old angsty college sophomore, lonely for home and feeling awkward and strange with everyone. I loved this song. I felt Robin was a kindred spirit.
I'm also an older listener (in my mid 60s). In their post disco era they did return to their roots. "Still Waters" is a beautiful example and one of my favorites of theirs.
Everyone is so taken by Barry's voice, his incredible falsetto, that they forget that Robin sang lead on a lot of their earlier songs. Robin has a distinctive sound, he is incredible with I'VE GOT TO GET A MESSAGE TO YOU and he wrote and sang of my home state MASSACHUSETTS.. One of my absolute favorite Bee Gees songs is TRAGEDY. A much more hard rocking sound.
According to all the important tabloids at the time (Tiger Beat, etc.) Barry wrote Massachusetts on a dare that there were words he couldn't write a song about. I wish I could remember who it was that dared him. Anyway, the word chosen was Massachusetts. I can understand thinking no one could do that. He not only won the dare he also wrote such a beautiful song. Oh, I just remembered where I heard this recently. It was a documentary about the group, with Barry discussing how hard it is to believe he outlived all of his brothers, including Andy. So I also heard it from his mouth, verifying what I remember reading in Tiger Beat. So it must have been any of his three brothers. As I write this, I remember Barry saying the falsetto was not his idea. One of the brothers was doing the falsetto. Their producer at the time (me with CRAC, sorry) had Maurice try for it, so we got Barry. The producer wanted Robin to save his very special voice.
I really enjoy watching young people enjoy music from my days, but you are now my favorite. I love that you allow us to see your real response and feelings!
I'm 72 and English. I remember when the Bee Gees were new in Britain. They were all born on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, but then moved to Manchester, their mother's home town, where they started singing in public at a very young age. Then they moved to Australia, where they became professional and left school early. They were amazed by the Beatles when they went to Australia and tried for some years to have a hit record. Then decided to return to England and sign up with Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager. He was too busy and passed them to Robert Stigwood, who took them to success. I always liked Robin the best he had a beautiful voice and when I found out that he was short-sighted like me, it was even better. He said it gave him confidence to go on stage, as he couldn't see the audience. Barry always said that Robin punched more than his weight, both physically and musically.
Robin Gibb had one of the most unique voices ever to exist. This song is so haunting. Lyrics just are so sad but beautiful. No one will ever compare to the bee gees
Robin sang lead on many of their earlier songs. You can usually tell it's him by his incredible vibrato. Other early songs to check out: Got to Get a Message to You, To Love Somebody, Lonely Days, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Massachusetts. And post Saturday Night Fever: Nights on Broadway, Tragedy, Love You Inside and Out and Jive Talking. All these songs are superb!
Hi SalvoG, This is one of my favourite songs of all time. I was introduced to it by a lovely lady called Christine in the late 1980's. I had a holiday in 1989 to Kenya, and I played this multiple times through my headphones on the outbound flight. After 3 glorious weeks, I returned, with this amazing piece of music whirling around my head for the whole 8 hour flight! I cried. Cried some more....... I thank you for your reaction to this, and completely understand why it brought tears to your eyes. What an honest reaction. Robin's voice was astonishing. From Robin to Robin.
SalvoG, what a wonderful reaction to Robin's signature song. Every time he performed it live he received a standing ovation sometimes lasting over a minute. One live performance that you should check out would be 1989's Melbourne concert, one of his most notable performances of this amazing song where he did receive a very long standing o. One very horrible incident in Robin's life that probably contributed to him writing very sad songs like "I Started a Joke" was the November 1967 Hither Green train disaster where he and future wife Molly were almost killed. Robin, still a teenager, was nearly decapitated from a train rail that came through their car and missed him by mere inches. He got out through a window and helped Molly out as well and continued to help others who were badly hurt or worse and this horrible experience stayed with him his entire life. Barry even said that it brought the pathos out in his brother and he was never the same. What a brave young man he was that day but it had a very lasting effect on him. Thank you for reacting to one of Robin's most beautiful leads and if I could suggest one other. "I Can't See Nobody" is another amazing Robin lead and "The Midnight Special" channel recently released a 1973 live performance which, in my humble opinion, is his best performance ever of this extraordinary song. He poured his heart and soul into all his live performances but this 1973 performance was just mesmerizing. Please consider reacting to this wonderful Robin lead. It would be greatly appreciated.
@lauriebarnes2999 hey Laurie❤ absolutely right. He was only 17 that horrific night, and a hero, pulling others from the wreckage. Living in Chicago and Country Lanes are more beautiful Robin leads.
@@jpmnewyork - In that train wreck there was a young man about his own age crying out to Robin "Please don't let me die" but Robin couldn't get him out of the tangled wreckage and his voice faded away. The next day, although told to rest he said he had to let his feelings out and he wrote a song with the lyrics "Really and Sincerely I tried". It could be interpreted as a love song but the meaning is clear. At only 17 he had to comfort people terribly injured some even needing on the spot amputations to free them, many died impaled by rails. He had PTSD for life. It wasn't recognised or treated back then.
Robin’s son RJ pulled this song up on his phone when he passed away, placed phone on his dad’s chest and played it. RJ said brought a whole new meaning to him. RJ does a great tribute to his dad singing this song as part of the Gibb Collective in my opinion. 😢always brings me to tears
@@CeciliaRodriguezRoge-eg6nl - I agree. RJ bears no physical or vocal resemblance to Robin. He is Dwina's son. He does look very much like Dwina's ex, David, who she split with in 1982. RJ was born in January of 1983. We can do the math. RJ was also adamant about Snow not being Robin's daughter, perhaps fearful of losing some inheritance. She is Robin's doppelganger although half Asian. Interestingly, Spencer, Melissa and Snow received money after Robin died. RJ did not. Snow received a home for her and her mother. Dwina got the Prebendal. My analysis, take it or leave it.
Robin's voice and the lyrics of the song are haunting and I cry every time I hear it even though it's so beautiful it's hard to explain, great reaction ...so good to see a man not afraid to cry
I loved The Bee Gees before Night Fever. The vocals and harmonies - breathtaking! I couldn’t listen to this without getting emotional. I grew up with 60s and 70s music. Amazing music!
Thank you for playing this. Robin was my angel. I loved him my whole life through. No one on this earth will ever have this gorgeous voice! RIP, my love.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Gibb family moved from the Uk to Australia & lived in the Redland Shire here in Queensland Australia. My late Mums friend was the one who gave the brothers there first break on local tv when they were still kids.
It says something about those times, that a song like that would be played on the airwaves, right next to rock and roll and pop. There is always a place for profound music that actually makes us transcend our mundane lives and see a bigger picture ❤
The song HOLIDAY ❤ Robin’s vibrato has a haunting quality, strong and clear. Most BeeGees songs that are sad, feature his voice as lead. His voice is so unique that I actually recognized it when I heard an “unknown” Bee Gees song used as a sound track on a TV show. Maurice has the deepest voice of the 3, but they know where to use the voices on their songs to get the best emotional response from listeners. The combination of voices makes magic. Listen to them sing live at concerts. You can see how they combine their voices and some live performances are even better than studio versions. Listen to their individual voices and see how they mesh together so beutifically th-cam.com/video/MLHygxb95fA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hdbbxwtM_52iHFui Song My World also showcases his vocals
This is the 1st time I have listened to this song for nearly 30 years - for reasons. Thank you - also - as much as I love them as a group - Robin's voice always hits me in the heart. Maurice also has a lovely voice- and their younger brother Andy. But Robin - always special. 😉
I'm a new listener but, your reaction to this wonderfully haunting song just got you a new follower. All four brothers had great voices, but Robin's was always more emotional to me. Thank you for being an old soul.
I love they way you look up information about the songs before reacting, so that you have good grasp of their background. Not many reactors take the time to do that!
Robin had a way to evoke emotions on so many levels I’m not this least surprised to see his voice made your tears pour from your eyes like it did for many. Including me too. All of the brothers were here to make us smile, cry and say goodbye. Long live the songs, sounds and harmonies they created for all of time. Timeless and beautiful.
It's so beautiful isn't it...God I miss those lads. A huge part of my youth along with Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and many others who were poets with amazing voices. Thank you, all of you.
you are an amazing music reviewers .its so great you show emotion and delve into all music you hear.I just love it.thanks for being who you are and by not being afraid of putting it out there.
Robin's voice has that quality of just hitting you right in the feels. I've been waiting for a year for you to react to this beautiful song...and for this very reason. You should check out a live version. You won't regret it.
This song is so amazing and I love your heartfelt truthful reactions. I love the Bee Gee's and always have, always will and Robin's voice is just phenomenal here. Thank you!
I agree.. I am a 65 year woman from Holland.. Just can't get enough of the Beegees... I was raised by their music, fell in love with a man looking just like Barry.. Only problem is... my husband CANNOT sing... 😅😂
The Gibb family moved from England to Australia in 1958 when the Gibb brothers were young. They formed the band after they had moved here ( Brisbane Australia ). I remember listening to them on the local radio. I assume the early albums were Australian recordings. They then got a contract with producer Robert Stigwood and moved back to England where they became famous worldwide
This song is raw. It sings about our ego, we all have an ego but the truth is we need to keep ourselves in check as our actions have reactions. Love how the 70's were taught morals in songs. You're response is great as this is a song that hits deep.
I don’t think that in all these years have I ever seen someone so moved by this song. Although, I understand where you’re coming from. For me, I usually react to the pain in a singer’s voice. But it’s also tough for me to watch some reactor’s as their reaction can make me become overly emotional to the point of choking up and getting weepy. But then again, I find these moments to be cathartic and healing. Thanks for being human and not a non-emotional block of granite. And as far as the early Bee Gee’s go, my favorites have always been “Words” and “Massachusetts”.
This is why your channel is the only music reaction channel I follow.... you FEEL the music. I cry to this EVERY TIME I hear this song. 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' is another you should check out (by the Bee Gees of course!)
I think you should watch their concert One Night Only, from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1997. They sing a great variety of their songs, and at one point the three of them gather at one mic and sing only to Barry’s guitar. Amazing concert!
One of their very best. Robin's voice, the lyrics, the background vocals, the whole production, make it a special song. Their early stuff was so good. I started hearing their music when I was eight or nine. One of my good friend's older siblings had their 'best of' album and we would listen to that a lot way back then. It's impossible for me to comprehend hearing this (or any of the music from back then) for the first time now, as an adult. This video is a good example of why I often enjoy watching reaction videos. Not so much the reaction itself, but seeing someone discover something new, seeing their appreciation of it and being affected by it. And the 'sharing' of it - even though you're not with that person, it still feels like you're sharing the experience of hearing the song.
Though this song is considered old in musical reference, it still springs new to the masses who perpetually discover and rediscover the talents of the Bee Gees. Even those of us who have been fans for the span of a generation find new meaning in old lyrics as life carries us into dimensions we have never before explored. Often seen as a spiritual commentary on Robin's part, he has never claimed that to be the basis of the piece, as such. Experience draws us all in a diversity of directions, often all at once, and inspiration is the trickle-down of that overload. I am not one to climb into the great minds of our times and autopsy their brainchild of work but I have an awareness of something woven into the lyric here that I've never before seen discussed. The piece encompasses only eight lines of poetic statement, clean and straight-forward in appearance and delivery, yet steeped in the mystery of a thousand ages. This song leaves naked, parts of the soul we tend to keep covered, even from our own deeper selves. We see in it, our own personal sins of omission that do not look so pretty in black and white and are even more haunting when presented in a package of understated music and single-voiced verse. Although I do see where the spiritual intonation peers through the lyric at us, I see here, too, the personal commentary of an inner moral dilemma being posed by the subject and the step by step process by which he rationalizes his justification for not following his inner personal voice. This person wants desperately to shed his etiquetted skin and stand on the purity of truth rather than cower in civilized silence in the face of injustice. He theorizes the consequences of such an action on his part. He knows his statement will upset the world that, up to this point, was living comfortably in its own shallow self-deception. Because his view is so different from everyone else, he knows this will upset the sedate tranquility of those around him. In defensive retaliation, rather than re-examining, reforming, and admitting to the error of their ways, society would turn its collective, disdainful back on his statement and proclaim the fundamental truth he has exposed to be merely the folly of a prankster. He goes on to see that he will not be taken seriously and cries in the frustration of being the only one who has had this vision of truth and reality. He feels alone and small in the cosmos. At this, he knows the world will take great delight in his outward appearance of weakness and defeat and in their arrogance he knows they will unite in crushing declamation and mercilessly taunt him wherever he goes, all the days of his life. He looks up, seeking heavenly approval and resolve of the issue. He attempts to clear his eyes searching for a sign of the miraculous awakening of those around him. Just as he begins to dry his eyes in the faith that, because of his sincerity of heart, there will surely now be change, he tumbles out of his dream-state into reality. He falls hard from grace back into the moment. The enormity of the entire situation crashes over him like a tidal wave as he sees the ramifications of what he has started by his simple statement of truth. He is paralyzed in thought and can no longer make sense of his own words as they drown in the whirlpool of confusion between human emotion and soulful truth. He eventually dies a broken man because he knows the truth but never pursued it to the fullest of its intent due to his lack of courage in his own personal convictions. He saw himself as wholly inadequate to challenge what he did not approve of in this world so he never stood up for what he believed in. After his death, civilization perpetuates itself in its blithe ignorance, unscathed by the voice of truth he held within. He is gone, and with him, the potential threat he posed to a thinly-skinned euphoric society. In the end, he sees that he had indeed been right and that society was truly wrong. He knows then, all too late, that he would have made a difference if only he had not given in to his own imagined fears. He wasted a lifetime repressing himself and the truth he had once envisioned. He had become his own worst enemy. He had shackled his own soul down - not the society that he had tried to hold accountable for his lack of action. He ultimately became the very thing he once morally raged against - a silent, self-deceiving member of a pretentious urbane society. Yes, the joke WAS on him.
I was a nurse when “I Started A Joke” came out. I loved it so much I must have told all my patients how much I loved it. A few days later one of my patient and their family bought it for me. We weren’t suppose to take gifts but they gave it to me after my shif 11:15 t and outside of the hospital.. I loved the record and my dear pts. It ( the record and gesture) still means so much
Wow. Incredible words. I just always thought he alienated himself but the way you explained takes me to a much deeper place. So much of what you said stands so true today. Maybe even more so. Thanks for your words.
Beautiful reaction to Robin’s signature song, which was played at his funeral. May he rest in eternal peace.

One of the best Bee Gees songs. Totally unique voice and perfectly done by Robin.
It takes a man to show his emotions to the extent of tears. Robin has a voice that can touch within.

Robin seemed to lack self-esteem from an early age. As he got older, any internal torment was due to his own actions & loose lifestyle.
There is nothing as pure as Robins voice. It stirs the soul.

Beautiful song, haunting and mysterious. A delivery - perfect. RIP Robin.
Robin my favorite. His voice, omg. Pierces my soul. This song hurts my heart and then his puppy dog eyes R.I.P Robin.
One of my favourite Bee Gees songs! Robins voice was so unique, a strength coupled with a vulnerability that you cannot really put into words.
ELLEN VANNAN ISLE OF OF Man antham ROBIN JUST KILLS IT
Yes, that's a lovely record. Only produced in a limited issue, to raise money for the Isle of Man children's hospital.
Thanks for going back past the disco. The Bee Gees are probably my all time ever vocal group.
Wow...never knew about that.
💔
He destroys the SONG.. he's not a GIBB
@@CeciliaRodriguezRoge-eg6nl we will respectfully have to agree to disagree
@@RuthBair-ht1fj - Respectfully, read my other comment and feel free to make your own judgement.
Such a beautifully sad song. He had an amazing voice 😢❤
Robin's voice and the lyrics of the song are haunting and I cry every time I hear it even though it's so beautiful it's hard to explain,
great reaction ...so good to see a man not afraid to cry
I loved The Bee Gees before Night Fever. The vocals and harmonies - breathtaking! I couldn’t listen to this without getting emotional. I grew up with 60s and 70s music. Amazing music!
Loved The Bee Gees disco too.
Robin's beautiful, ethereal voice went forever quiet way too soon...💜
Listen to their individual voices and see how they mesh together so beutifically

Song My World also showcases his vocals
This is the 1st time I have listened to this song for nearly 30 years - for reasons. Thank you - also - as much as I love them as a group - Robin's voice always hits me in the heart. Maurice also has a lovely voice- and their younger brother Andy. But Robin - always special. 😉
I'm a new listener but, your reaction to this wonderfully haunting song just got you a new follower. All four brothers had great voices, but Robin's was always more emotional to me. Thank you for being an old soul.
Imo, Robin has the best voice but they're all good. Hopefully someday Salvo listens to Andy.
I love they way you look up information about the songs before reacting, so that you have good grasp of their background. Not many reactors take the time to do that!
That's why I joined. I like that Salvo has some idea but not enough to spoil the experience.
This was my first favorite song of the Bee Gees. They changed their sound so many times through the years. Always moving on with the musical tides.
Robin, Maurice, Barry, Andi.
Puro talento ❤❤❤❤
My favorite Bee Gees song Robins voice is the best. ❤
This song often has me in tears.
“Words” is another fantastic song by the Beegees
Such a beautiful song!
Yes! I miss them too!!!
Yes it's an amazing song and Robin doing it in his beautiful voice ❤️
Gets ya *_right in the feels doesn't it?_* 😢
Loved the Bee Gees since the 60's just like everyone else!
The Bee Gees music library is primarily love & happiness. The first time you hear this song, its surprising cuz your not expecting it. Great reaction!
This song touches your heart and gives it a little squeeze….❤️
This could be my favorite Bee Gee song. I love Robin's voice!
you are an amazing music reviewers .its so great you show emotion and delve into all music you hear.I just love it.thanks for being who you are and by not being afraid of putting it out there.
Robin's voice has that quality of just hitting you right in the feels. I've been waiting for a year for you to react to this beautiful song...and for this very reason. You should check out a live version. You won't regret it.
I agree. Listening to it live is an experience.
Robin had such a warm voice. He'd pull you in to his songs
Wow, I love hearing the early BeeGees. Robin's voice brings out my emotions. Tears to my eyes. Not sad, majestic.
This song is so amazing and I love your heartfelt truthful reactions. I love the Bee Gee's and always have, always will and Robin's voice is just phenomenal here. Thank you!
This was the BeeGees I knew!!! Loved them before their Disco phase. At this time they were phenomenal.
They were pretty
phenomenal overall and there are lots of non-disco of them after that period too.
I love Robin’s voice! So talented and the harmony of all 3 brothers is something that has no comparison
Wasn’t that beautiful, Salvo! “ this song by The Bee Gees is my favorite & yes, very emotional.👍♥️😪
the quiver in robin's voice is what gets you. combined with the lyrics of this song it's hard to hold back the tears. RIP
No one can sing with such emotion like Robin.
I agree.. I am a 65 year woman from Holland..
Just can't get enough of the Beegees... I was raised by their music, fell in love with a man looking just like Barry.. Only problem is... my husband CANNOT sing... 😅😂
I'm crying with you. This song always does that to me. It touches a part of my soul.
Love your reactions, Salvo, but, heck, it's about time for this one... Robin was such an incredible talent. Well done! More of Robin's leads, please.
A true passion to great music.. You don't have to explain it. It happens to me also. It did just now.
Such a pure voice.
My favorite Bee Gees song that Robin is singing the Lead, it’s definitely an emotional one
Amazing song!!! Excellent Reaction 🙌🏻👏🏻
Such a haunting song. I saw them live and they sang this song. One of my favorite groups ever. Hugs brother. It is sad and very moving.
I think you should watch their concert One Night Only, from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1997. They sing a great variety of their songs, and at one point the three of them gather at one mic and sing only to Barry’s guitar. Amazing concert!
You are soooo sweet! Thankyou for loving this song!❤
It ( the record and gesture) still means so much
@@YosheWilson The song has more meaning than people realize.
Wow. Incredible words. I just always thought he alienated himself but the way you explained takes me to a much deeper place. So much of what you said stands so true today. Maybe even more so. Thanks for your words.
🇬🇧 This one had the same effect on me the first time I heard it. It still does tbh. RIP Robin & Maurice. You will always be loved & missed. 🎼💔
This is an absolute beautiful song ❤️ and a heartfelt reaction. When music touches your soul 🎶❤️
This is so different than the up beat disco...makes me cry too❤
