- The River Thames gives the best ever birthday presents! Join me as I unwrap Thames treasures covered in mud! My favourite kind of gift. It was only when I was leaving the foreshore and the tide was sweeping in that I found my favourite present of the day! I could hardly believe it when I got it home to have a closer look.

Happy Birthday, Nicola! We are dedicated watchers. And we especially liked this episode. When you were talking about the pub mug that you found and you showed the bit about Stanley and Polly Stone, we saw that they lived in Fox Point, Wisconsin which is where we live. We quickly called our daughter Beret who is the Manager of Digital Assets at the Milwaukee Art Museum. She told us about the Chipstone Foundation and that they do exhibit some of their collection from time to time at the museum. It's a small world isn't it?! Thankyou once again for such a wonderful show!

For once I do actually know something about something, namely the fork. I inherited a set of fish-serving cutlery (utensils?) which consisted of a large fish knife for dividing the whole fish from the spine, a fork like yours and a spoon, all with curvy edges and decorated. They were obviously prized as they were kept in a beautiful case lined with blue velvet. I am guessing that they were Edwardian or late Victorian.

I live on the west coast of Canada. I've never heard anyone here use the term "mud larking." I guess some people do something like it here, but our finds are very different, and most of them would be quite recent. People have been here for at least 15,000 years (maybe 25,000 or more), but there were fewer of them and they didn't use metal or glass. But what we do find on the shore and in the water here is an abundance of fresh food. Clam digging, oyster picking, etc is what's all about.
Hello Nicola and happy happy birthday . . . I didn't begin to feel old until my last birthday a year ago, but as I approach my 81st this Dec. 23 I am trying to think 'young' . . . watching your mudlarking videos helps enormously in that department, especially when I see the River Thames and how close the relationship between you and it continues to be. The Georgian tankard gifted to you by the river is lovely. Recently my sister's husband was sent to London for three years on business, and my sister is over the moon to be back in London. She (Laura) did her first mudlarking stint a month ago, and I told her to watch your videos to see how it is done.

Happy Birthday !! Since the Mississippi River, in the US, has dropped to record levels from the drought, "mudlarking" along the Mississippi waterfront is starting a new craze !! To make money, some people are finding old metal things and bringing their finds to the scrap yard. Recycling and cleaning up the river in one simple step.
