Hey there, I have the Abu 7000c early 80's model,.. mine has not been magged but I still get 150 yrd cast out of it ,... and I don't fish with bait,.. not ever ... lures and flies only,.. if you didn't have that high/ low set up,.. your casting distance will double ! Im not saying you'll be able to cast 150 yrds,.. youll need at least a 12' heaver to get that distance,.. I'm sure that mag set up cost you a pretty penny .... use it for what it was meant for ... long distanst casting ... meaning 150 yrds or better and you wont be able to with the level wind,... lose the level wind and get a CT kit for your abu 7000 you'll be glad you did 👍😎🤙
Hi mate enjoyed the vid. I saw in the comments you said the older models use a 3.2 x 10x4, when you say older do you mean the pre 1981 Swedish ones? I have one of those with bushings and also a made in Taiwan one, silver spool, pointy star drag wheel. If you can get your hands on one of these they are faster for some reason.

Not sure what year it was but ABU started to get Omoto from a Korea to manufacture the parts then they assembled the actual reels in Sweden. Then Omoto actually assembled the reels themselves in Korea On the reel foot Abu had a sticker, assembled in Sweden. . Some slightly different design to the old Swedish ones but these were good reels and casted well. Interstinglyy the reel I have is fairly rare as it is an ABU 7000 but with a Penn badge. Here in Australia ABU must of had a deal with Penn and they sold for a short time a reel called a Penn Kimberly. It came in a 5000 size and 7000 size. It is an ABU in every way just rebadged and came in black and red. My 7000 kimberly I bought second hand off an old guy, took it apart reblubed it, added carbontex drag washers and it is my favourite go to reel, It's smooth free running and fast, casts my best. . Bigsal51FishingTexas That should really help with the cast distance. Another thing you might do, is clean the worm gear on the level wind and oil it up for less friction when it casts.
I'm thinking about doing the same magnet mod on my reel. Accept my reel is one I inherited from my father & law and it one made is Sweden. Do you have any regrets making this modification?
Chuck Gonzales I added the mag from black dog tackle and I lubed and creased but the bearings I purchased from fastedys were wrong size I learned the older models use a 3.2x10x4 and the new 7000c I got last week uses the 3x10x4 bearings

Yea so this one on the video is a 1970s model but the newer ones from 2000’s are much better casters

What do you think about how it casts? I seen the video when you installed that mag! Cool stuff.
ALAN1Z FISHING I think it really frees the spool and keeps it from back lashing I am going to mod the bearings then we’ll see how it does
