Thank you for sharing your talents with us. Im working on lots of sheer fabric wedding dresses with horsehair in the hems. Thanks for the tip on ironing afterwards. I definitely need to invest in a professional sewing machine with a flat bed. It looks like it makes sewing a lot more easier when all your fabrics are laying flat.
Thank you so much. I volunteered to hem a formal dress with a train and 2 inch horsehair hem. Your video, which I will watch a few more times, is saving my butt. ;)
Hi have been sewing gowns for 35 years. I designed and made my wife’s wedding gown. She looked so beautiful on our wedding day. I had stopped sewing for a number of years as life sometimes creates a different path for you. I have just recently started up sewing again and thanks to you tube videos like yours the transition back to sewing has been easy. I watched your video showing your workshop. It was inspirational. Just last week I ordered a serger and should receive it this Tuesday. I am currently working on a gown for one of my daughters. Partially inspired by a Dior design. So far I have the bodice done and

I have worked with horsehair braid before, but I am currently making the bridesmaids dresses for my cousin's wedding and the dresses are made of sheer fabric and she wants the body the horsehair braid creates, I've never sewn it into sheer fabric before and I'm SO glad I found your channel and this video just in time
This was the exact information I was looking for. Thank you so much! I'm hemming my granddaughter's bridal gown and was concerned when I saw how it was hemmed.
When they aren't included, you can always google the image. For instance, image search, "wedding gown horsehair braid" and you should get results. I'll try to include when I can.
What a beatiful video! I already knew most but it is always so nice to experience that you are doing it right! I amjust a selfmade sewster so I just found out myself. Thank you very much !!
Omgggg you are God sent. A angel on earth. I’m in the process of creating a few sample bridal gowns to get into that industry as a seamstress. I just stumbled on your videos. Please NEVER leave us and keep the videos coming. Your videos are the best on TH-cam. I’ve learned soooooo much from you. I just subscribed and turned on my notifications.
Thank you so much. Please share with your friends and social media. I am trying to grow my channel, and someday hopefully it will help make up for all of the time it takes! In the meantime, the gratitude sure does go a long way!! Good luck with your designs! :)
That looks so much better than the hem I'm working on! I think I'll undo it and start over because it seems to be pulling every which way. I noticed you stitched the top edge of the wide braid by having the sheer organza on top. That might be my problem, so I'll follow your technique and hope for the best.
I have a bride who wants horse hair braid, 2”, around the perimeter of her cathedral length veil. Any tips on how to do that or is it the same as sewing on sheer fabric? Thank you, your tutorials are great! You are my go to when I have a questionable technique!
I would test it out on a sample piece. Tulle and h.h. braid are both cheap! :) You may find that you need to baste the hh, even if only when it is on the bias parts.
Omg why was there not such a comprehensive guide on horsehair braids 2 years back when I attempted to make my own prom dress Needless to say though, the horsehair braid edge wasnt beautifully finished and I'm really tempted to take everything apart and redo it again
I have a question?! But first : What a great tutorial! Truly the Best bridal sewing techniques online ! THANK YOU! I always find myself undercharging for a similar hem. How much do you charge for the horse braid hem on a 4 layer dress.. Top layer has no lace appliqué to remove and no beads on it ?
Really helpful. Thank you! I am going to use horsehair braid for my daughter's wedding dress. But I am not sure what size to buy. The skirt is heavy silk satin underneath (A line) and light lace gathered over the top, with both skirts coming to the same circumference at the floor length. No train. We reckon the horsehair braid should go on the underdress, so it takes the shape of a bell, and then the lace will distribute nicer over the top. I would really appreciate your opinion on how wide the braid should be in this case. 1 inch? 2 inch?
Hi, I am about to do a gown skirt... the satin is medium thick and it is the final layer. Would you recommend a hem like this, or would you recommend I lightly line the satin skirt and then do the horsehair braid hem with the hem tape and blind stich that you show in your other video?
@@BridalSewing Thank you....3 or 4" wow, scary, seems really wide...lol! I think I only have 2" so I'll have to order...always the way of it! Sigh... :)
No, try the 2" first! :) You might like it better. If you want that luxe volume, the wider horsehair would be nice, but plenty of gowns have 1 or 2 and it's just right.
@@BridalSewing I pinned the 2 inch on my mock-up, and it looks perfect. Getting ready to cut "real" fabric; nerve wracking! As a professional alteration specialist who has to work with gowns, in your opinion, should I line the satin skirt where all seams are enclosed inside, the sides are tacked at the seam allowances, and then the hem is all hemmed together with the skirt, or would you say to line each piece, sew the side seams together, then press the seams open flat and hem? I hope I am making sense..lol! Thank you for your time and patience!!!!
Just rewatched this video while working on a multilayer HH braid skirt. I was having trouble with the tulle puckering. I tried putting a layer of tissue paper under the braid while sewing and this helps a lot but I had to go back and clean up the tussie out of the seam. I also am having issues with the needle hitting the HH braid and causing a pull on the other side of the braid. I tried both a sharp and a ballpoint. Any suggestions?
How do you apply horsehair braid to get the rolling or ruffled affect? I am guessing you pull or stretch the braid as you sew it in. If so, is it like sewing in elastic using a ratio of fabric to the braid for the amount of rolled affect. Thank you for your videos they are very helpful and professional.
No, that will do the opposite and result in a gathered tulle. You will ideally cut on a circle to get the tulle to wave by reason of its shape and the ratio of the hem edge length compared to top seam length of each piece.
I have to manually keep the fabric stretched to it's full size and not allow puckering while sewing with clear thread. I hate sewing with invisible thread for this reason. It tends to stretch while being sewn and then draw up after. You just have to loosen the tension, but mostly really keep it pulled apart and not let it happen.
Hi, firstly thank you so much for this tutorial. So many good tips here!! However, I am having trouble with this exact hem...I have 5cm horse hair braid on a double circle organza hem and when i sew the top of the horse hair down there seems to be too much fabric to fit in, like roping that is occuring. (which doesnt make sense to me because a smaller circle has less of a circumference than a larger) Just wondering of you could explain why this is happening or have any tips for sewing in the top sewing line of the horse hair? Should I be curving the horse hair braid like you did in the rolled hem example? I have sewn it but there is now variation in the thickness of the horsehair braid which shows through the organza. It goes from 5cm to 3cm as ive attempted to ease the fabric in to sit straight. I already gave up on the 10cm horsehair braid as it was so bad. Would love to hear your thoughts.
How do you keep your needle from occasionally catching the horsehair braid? I’m having a problem where the needle catches it and pulls a strand through the fabric.
Love your videos! Question for you: when sewing in horsehair on skirt won't you get bubbling when you fold it up to stitch it down or where it joins as the skirt circumference becomes more narrow and the width will not be the same as the hem? How do you prevent that? Yours looks very flat l, what's the secret?
Elia Mascorro Yes, it can bubble out. You will want to neatly seam it and restart your braid at every seam that you need to. Pressing helps, also. Also, check out my rolled hem foot vid for hints on rolling the edge for flat results. Pressing always helps, too. Like everything, it can be 5 or 6 things that add up to a nicely finished project. I hope this helps!

The horsehair braid in the dress I am working on is much lighter weight than the braid I can purchase. The new braid is stiffer. Do you think this matters at all or will it make the hem much different than the original?
@@BridalSewing That is what I thought it might do. I think I will salvage the original HH braid and reuse. Thank you for responding so quickly! How do you keep your needle from occasionally catching the horsehair braid? I’m having a problem where the needle catches it and pulls a strand through the fabric.
It does sometimes. To minimize the risk, use a fresh ballpoint, I like sizes 9-14,(usually no larger than 14.) & sew a little more slowly than usual.
Do you precut the horsehair before beginning to attach it? Or do you just hold the box/spool between your knees and pull it out as you go?
Sometimes I precut a random, overly approximated length. Sometimes I roll some off of the bin by my machine.
