From Buffalo New York, came all the way to Vegas to propose to my now fiancé and watch my first rugby league match the next day. One of the coolest experiences of my life. Permanent fan now 🇦🇺🏉🇺🇸
As a Brit, I have mixed feelings about this. I'm all for expanding the game - new, bigger audiences, bigger platforms for the players, all good stuff. But as Brits, we've seen what a well funded league in the NRL can do to our own less lucrative competition: our best players and coaches are tempted away from Super League into the NRL, often never to be seen again. The Grand Finals that have missed the likes of the Burgess brothers, James Graham, and many others. Of course, that's great for the players, and in their shoes, I would do the same: it's a short career, and they should maximise their return. But, it inevitably detracts from the origin of the game that birthed their talent. So now, if this is to take off in America, and I'm half-hoping it does because I think we have the greatest sport on the planet, what then when there is yet another more lucrative competition to attract away from the Super League, and our player base is inevitably further diluted. Having lived in the US, I think it has little chance of breaking through: NFL, NBA, Baseball, and many more are all baked into the psyche of Americans. I remember one American said to me: "If you guys want football to take off in America [who said we did, the globe seems to be doing quite well without you, thank you], you'll need to change the game so that there are more advertisement breaks, which is what a lot of people watch the game for!" [Oh Jesus, I give up!!]. Personally, I would much prefer to see the sport grown in other European countries - yes, there's less money in it, but I think they would treat the sport like it has something to offer them, and not the other way around!
Yes, Rugby is never going to supplant the American sports of Gridiron Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey. Soccer (football) has tried for years as we have had everyone from Pele, Beckham, to Messi playing in our MLS league. We will have our 2nd World Cup in 2026, the other 1994. The UK has only had one in 1966. I do think it's a great idea to start every NRL season in Las Vegas. It is a lot of fun for the Aussies to come over, as I never met an Aussie that didn't love Las Vegas. It is an amazing place!
What a failure. Just try to grow the game home. Stop wasting money in the US. Many sports tried and they failed. AMERICANS only like their own sports.❤
While not a fan of either, you could not have prayed for a better introduction to the American audience with which to open the 2024 season! I will say this once & once only; well done, Manly, well done, Souths. Now let the Panthers show 'em how it's REALLY done!!!!!
In case you don’t know, some NFL and NRL team have the same names lol. The dolphins, panthers, eagles, cowboys, etc. They already have millions of fans in the US haha.
Only 61'000 watched it on TV in the US................WOFTAM! - waist of time effort and money! failed big time! A Matilda's game would have made more of an impact here, and in the US.......that said it all really.
A magic amazing Nite of Fab footy, wonderful by NRL to take it to Vegas, so many players would be paid 10 times more a year in USA footy, especially 11 for Manly Ollie, Tom scored 1st Try when hand on ball ,naaaaa again Bunker
Where's all those haters that laughed at me and said these games would be a flop and this won't pan out??? Come outta hiding! That stadium looks awfully packed! Well done the boys for an awesome US introduction.
NSW and QLD played in 1987. Australian and New Zealand teams also played exhibition games all the way back in the 1950s. And I am pretty sure I have heard of English club teams playing in the US during the 60s

Welcome to the game mate 😎
u wont regret
as a new yorker its intensity non stop
As a Las Vegas local who had never even heard of the NRL a week ago… I’ll be back next year!! Great game
You can watch every weekends
If that’s the way the season starts 2024 is gonna be a massive year
Luke Brooks shows his talent and also gets a try. So happy for the bloke.
Did nothing at the Tigers.
Me too good on him!
Bludged for 13 years at the Tigers and did nothing.

What an awesome first round game. NRL is on another level this year. Lots of love from New Zealand.
i do not back either team.
but definitely proud of the boys for putting up a good show. well done.
crowd certainly loved it!
Great start to the season, Manly! Brooks was impressive and Turbo is looking strong and fit.
I’m glad they came and showed what a wonderful game the NRL is to play. I hope they’ll play more games here, maybe even come to the east coast
They are playing there another 4 years.
Is vegas not west coast
I think the plan atm is to just keep doing Round 1 games in Vegas for the next few years and see how it grows.
@@tiggakayzVegas is in the desert bro
@steadybot I get that but isnt that still considered west coast
Rugby league brings joy, community, and lifelong friendships. I can't imagine life without it.
Great to see real rugby in America!
This isn’t rugby union lil bro
@@Jnr4099Exactly. It's far better.
Had a gut feel this would happen as a Bunnyman
What's your gut about the rest of the season? Mine has had the rumbles since Demetriou took over as coach.
I had a gut feel Souths would lose but I still tipped them 🤦🏻😅😅😅
🇺🇸 this is the NRL baby 🔥
up the mighty sea eagles, did us proud over in the states...
Was waiting for a touch down celebration and Garrett delivered.
Wasnt just me then who seen it haha

absolutely brilliant game to start the 2024 season
I’m so happy for manly to win
Very few things warm the cockles of my heart more than watching Souths come 2nd

It's OK,as long as you have cheating refs and officials, why would a good player want to stay there anyways?
