It was a 45 minute drive to my nearest rental shop when i was a kid in the 90's. That trip back home after I made my choice was great because I got to read the instruction manual cover to cover in anticipation of playing "my" new game when I got home.
Here in Ireland people were more into computers back then like the commodore 64, Amiga and Amstrad. Rental shops for NES games were few and far between due to the consoles relative unpopularity. Not really so much where my house was located but the rarity of rental places that did NES/SNES games.
Oh Man, I did the same with SNES, PS1 and PS2 game manual when I was riding the bus home, it was always a special feeling, this anticipation of the new game and already diving into it for a bit. Ever since games don't come with physical manuals anymore, we got robbed so hard of this.... :(
stevehitman Kid I don't wanna break u, but girls are gonna like the fact u like them all ur life, doesn't mean they actually like u, just the fact u like them, it's hard wired in their brains like sex.
+DaeOh Better yet, lets use the Darkstalkers/Street Fighter Alpha 3 scheme, 2 coins for 1 fucking credit. Or even better, lets make the game so fucking impossible that the people would need to sell their houses in order to buy enough coins to beat this game (Konami's Gradius III Arcade strategy)
+DaeOh It's actually a traditional tournament rule for fighting games that only the loser can switch characters. It carried over to even modern tournaments like EVO.
polterghost That's the main reason i could never really get into fighting games. It seems like the right genre for me, but i value my fingers and controller more >.
I love the sound that controller makes. Just sounds so sturdy, and it brings back arcade memories. BTW, I forget what it is, but theres a controller combination on neo geo that resets the system. I wonder if in the flurry of combat one of them did that accidentally.
8:30 - James issued soft reset. Soft reset is done by holding down a / b / c / d / start at the same time. I never seen a controller smasher like James!! XD Funny!
"Beat 'em and eat 'em [...] It doesn't sound pornographic, it sounds violent, like you beat somebody up and eat 'em... Oh, I get... Beat 'em... and eat 'em..."
2:58 I use Time in single player modes. In games like Street Fighter II, time gives you more points after each round, going towards your high score on the top 10 ranking. If you turn off the timer, you don't get a time bonus added to your score, resulting in a lower score.
Kratosx Well, instruction booklets where about more than learning the game. The art and story bits where equally, if not more important. I look back especially fondly on the SMB3 instructions, as well as the Pokemon R&B one. Lots of cool art in those, as well as info on the world and its characters. We Love Katamari's instructions where beautiful as well. And as a kid, i basically only read them in the car ride home from the video game store. And even then it was just to be able to imagine how cool the game would be once i finally got home. Rarely touched them after that initial trip. So yes, men (and children) don't need to read instructions. But looking at the art and reading about the lore sure is fun! :)
CrossfacePanda I respect that they are the types to jump into the game immediately (I have done that with some games myself), but what I don't like is when they complain about certain situations they wouldn't have an issue with if they read the manual. You can't bash the game for your ignorance.
This game looks like a lot of fun! The slower nature of the combat and the slowdown that occurs when high damage moves are used reminds me a lot of Samurai Shodown.
Cimoooooooo - Trackballs are awesome. If I had it my way, I'd replace my PC mouse with one. The closest I've got is a Logitech trackball, and I do in fact use it sometimes. It does lack the scroll wheel, though. I found a newer model, but the ball itself is way smaller and extremely hard to use for me.
I spent several hours playing this on the arcade version...this was very popular in Brazil, as well as all the other Neo Geo 330MegaMax arcade machines such as King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown and Super Sidekicks. This rocks....gotta admit I played it a lot online with MaMe/Kailera
I admit, on casual play it's pretty bullshit that the winner can't change character. However, in competitive gaming that's the standard to avoid counter-picking (it would be completely awful if winner could change the character also).
Talitor I mean, all you need to do to manually enforce using the same character in a tournament is just make sure the guy just confirms on the same character. There's not much purpose to actively code that restriction into the game so you mess up anyone that isn't being that competitive.
Talitor I understand the reason for it, but is there any need to force that on anyone not playing in tournaments? It's not like it takes up more time to force the winner to hit A or whatever on the same character, since the loser has to take extra time to change anyway.
Mike ' s ROAR at 7:11 just kills me when he starts laughing hahaha.must have played that back a hundred times already heh.i wanna use that as a sample in one of my new songs.
This is my favorite fighting game of all time and i remember James mention that it was his as well in a older video. Glad to see you guys playing it now!
I just heard of this a well ago on the Classic Game Room show and immediately wanted to play it. Not only do the graphics look amazing but the fighting looks hype.
Wow. This game looks like fun. Like James, I'm more a fan of the "Street Fighter school" of games that revolve around certain basic stick/D-Pad movement groupings. I can plug myself into those a lot easier than, say, a Mortal Kombat. I'm not at all a fan of Block or Run buttons, either. Interesting points about owning a coin-op. Mike's mention of a sit-down Star Wars arcade cabinet is a good one. If you have the room, owning something unique like a sit-down cabinet is pretty cool; the Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator sit-down cabinet is also really nice. I also like the fact that James & Mike play on original hardware. Emulation is fine, but it's not the same as playing the original game on the original hardware. That's one of the reasons why I built my Retro Library. Sure, I could play emulated versions of NES, SNES, Genesis, and PlayStation games... but playing the original games provides (for me, anyway) the purest experiences... and calls to mind more personal memories.
PrinnyDood That is why I love the Homing mechanic in the all-girls fighting game Arcana Heart, which allows players to zone in on their opponent, eliminating that issue.
ZigTheHunter Most game mechanics are unnecessary for casual play, but they are still important. You can't very well design a game solely around people mashing random buttons.
sarahIcommented I completely agree, they are important to have, but it maybe shouldn't be the default option. A game need to be designed with both depth and accessibility in mind based off their target audience.
@@gurvmlk Double Dragons on Neo Geo actually is loosely based on the terrible Double Dragons live action Movie. They went to the developer and asked to make an adaptation of the movie and we got this that has nothing to do with the movie other than Billy and Jimmy transforming into their Gi for their special.
I'm 28yo.. and I've recall this game, although I've never had this console at my home :D This is something that had massive popularity as arcade machine :) And we had lots of them in game center near train station of Vilnius, Lithuania. I can't believe I remember this... I've been something like 10yo back then :)
Anyone looking to guy a Neogeo cd, I would highly recommend you getting the CD-z version , it loads faster cutting down on those infamous neogeo cd load times, I bought mine a few years ago ,& to my shame I have not played a whole game on it yet, I am sure plenty other video game fans have the same problem ,I just have too many consoles & games to find the time to play them all, on the up side , there is always something to finish (or start)

They have a steep learning curve, especially if you are very used to pads, but they are so rewarding once you get used to them. Not to mention, the buttons require fewer physical movements to press, and you can always mod a stick to make up for any physical preferences you may have. Anyway, great video. Love the series. XD
a lot of the charm of these old school games is their sound and music. It's cool to hear you guys talk and all, but wish more of the game sound was included.
Oh man that brought me back with them talking about the old star wars cockpit arcade my parents used to have one in their restaurant when I was a kid loved it thanks James and mike!!
The joystick tech determines a bit of that. They usually come in 4 or 8 way configurations and how they are orientated. You could have a 4 way switch that is laid out like a square where UDLR are directly translated (Lets use NSWE for the switches). They could also be set like a diamond where Left is actually two switches firing (WS = left, Up = WN, UpLeft = W). If one of the switches starts to wear out only one would get odd effects. Some 8 way switches can be toggled into 4 way mode and if you remember some arcades put a metal plate in for force 4 way mode to prevent diagonal joystick movements. 4 way mode was used for things like pacman and tetris which gave better precision for those kind of movements. It gets even more convoluted when you take in the type of switches used (optical, leaf, etc.) the plate used (round, diamond, cross) and the number of switches (as stated 4 and 8 are common). You could have a 4-way, diamond restricted, optical, and 8 way switch, round, leaf, etc. Some were digital ON\OFF but some were analog (Opticals I think) that measured the distances rather then just on\off. The problem with home consoles is they tried to make their joysticks as universal as possible for a wide variety of games rather then the appropriate joystick for a specific game genre. That is why until recently home console joysticks were just plain shit. Some hard core MAME nerds I know have 8 sets of joysticks for various games. 1 set for games like Ikari Warriors, 1 set for fighting games, 1 set for games like pacman and Tetris, another set for Warlords (ok they are spinners but you get the point) another one for playing that god awful golf game, a replica Tron stick, steering wheel set, and a replica of the yolk stick for Star Wars, and the last one I think is a generic arcade stick set (middle of the road) for games like Dungeon and Dragons, gauntlet, etc. Arcade Geeks are hard core. Google HAPP, Sanwa, and Seimitsu for joystick types. You guys should build a MAME machine and document the process. Plenty of help out there so you can also make the sticks usable on consoles or grab something like an XArcade stick.
He's gonna hang out with his buds, And play the games that ain't dus. He'd rather have a birthday cake dish To blow out the candles and make a wish. He'd rather eat some chicken wings And play some games that are awesome things. He's the happiest gamer you've ever seen. His buddy has a giant ween. He's the happy video game nerd.
I love when they play on obscure consoles like the Neo Geo CD. I wish they'd do more Neo Geo cartridge games though. Also, as far as the arcade cabinet argument, I'd love to have an Asteroids machine. My college had one that I would spend so much time on. The monitor had this unique look to the graphics, they glowed in a way that you can't get on a computer or flat-screen. That was an awesome game.
The only fighting game I play seriously is -Smash Broa- Smash Bros, as that's he only one where button mashing doesn't actually get you anywhere unlike Street Fighter or MK where you could beat someone through sheer luck. I still love playing them though, and this one looks neat.
BlackHairedGoo n You also run and jump in CoD, would you call it a platformer? No, because that would be stupid. In games like CoD, you predominantly shoot things. Thus, it's a shooter. Fuck's sake.
BlackHairedGoo n Which has fighting in it. Hence it's a fighting game. Would you call New Super Mario Bros. U a party game just because 4 people can play at once? Or would you call that a platformer? See where I'm going with this? Your logic is stupid. -____-
Dam I'm late as FUCK! I had no idea the Angry Nerd was married let alone have a child? Man I've been missing out lol he fully his kid will be into video games like him
***** Angry Video Game Kid could be a thing in the future. Though, instead of bad game reviews would most likely be a kid getting angry at a video game for having a difficulty.
I always come back to this video to see 7:00 it cracks me up every time. Especially when Mike starts grunting shortly afterward and then loses it. Probably picturing what James said beforehand. xD Ahh, these guys are hilarious together.
James is such a noob.. lmao. Look at the way he is just mindlessly mashing all the buttons.. i bet the reason why the game reset was because he pressed some combination of the buttons or just reset due to input overload.. lol James isn't even trying to do any moves. If you're gonna mindless mash buttons, you should play tekken/MK or something rather than street fighter type games(not counting the vs games/series.. like xmen vs street fighter) . No wonder they prefer MK to SF. All you had to do in MK 1 was jump kick, uppercut, and be able to do 1 special move(like subzero's fireball or scorpions get over here rope etc).
I love seeing friends who don't typically play fighting games, have fun fighting each other and learning how to play as they go.

I've spent an entire mortgage playing this game in the arcades here in Argentina when was a kid. One of the best Neo Geo fighting games IMO
The arcade version of this game was relatively succesful here in Brazil (at least in the bar I used to go, hehe). Happy memories. =)
Those controls are hilariously loud.
Not having the option to pick another guy is a clever way to make people have to put more quarters in a machine.

CaN you play as Bimmy?
BIMMY and Jimmy? Bimmy isn't even a real name! Classic nerd.

Tricob1974 Trackballs were what the modern-day mouse originated from. There's a reason why they died with the DOS era.

He's gonna hang out with his buds,
And play the games that ain't dus.
He'd rather have a birthday cake dish
To blow out the candles and make a wish.
He'd rather eat some chicken wings
And play some games that are awesome things.
James and Mike talk about the sad reality of video game collectors. "It has to be the real thing!" because having is more important than doing
Finally back together guys.
This is much more entertaining for me.
Please play Power Stone for Dreamcast....
Yea the Power stone games where extremely fun and i really wish they could release them on the new consoles.
I used to play power stone at the arcade
It's fine to be a casual player on fighting games, because not everyone is an expert on certain games, the important is to love the game. :)
Man, this has gotta be my favourite J&MM ever. I was cracking up the whole time!
I just LOVE how they exchange the yellow part of HP bar depending on who lands next hit.
Imagine that - the start button starts the game 🙄🤦♂️
There are extensions for the Neo Geo, I picked up 2 of them for each joypad and life's been great ever since. I never regretted it once.
Mike is wrong. You can emulate Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. The Supermodel emulator can run it.
igot2muchfreetime AH but can it be emulated correctly?
-Mike
Cinemassacre It is not 100% correct but it is 100% playable. Only minor annoyances with graphical errors.
Cinemassacre Can any emulator emulate anything correctly?
vgRealm It depends on the emulator.
vgRealm Yes lots!
I like how the camera zooms in and out as it follows the players =)
I can't believe how many cool games I missed out on as a kid.
With Emulators, it's never too late.
The only fighting game I play seriously is -Smash Broa- Smash Bros, as that's he only one where button mashing doesn't actually get you anywhere unlike Street Fighter or MK where you could beat someone through sheer luck. I still love playing them though, and this one looks neat.
wee1owen12 Is smash broa a kind of snake?
BlackHairedGoo n Since, you know, you started _fighting_ in it. Kinda obvious.
BlackHairedGoo n You also run and jump in CoD, would you call it a platformer? No, because that would be stupid. In games like CoD, you predominantly shoot things. Thus, it's a shooter. Fuck's sake.
BlackHairedGoo n You're kidding right? -______-
BlackHairedGoo n Which has fighting in it. Hence it's a fighting game. Would you call New Super Mario Bros. U a party game just because 4 people can play at once? Or would you call that a platformer?
See where I'm going with this? Your logic is stupid. -____-
We take the time off for fighting games at my house when we're playing casually. We call it "prison rules" because it's TO THE DEATH!
This game is pretty awesome considering its release date
I love that controller noise
James, does your wife ever come down and look into what's going on while you film?
I don't think his daughter is that old yet.
Don't get a wife, too much stress, lol this is coming from some 14 year old,do what you want.
Dam I'm late as FUCK! I had no idea the Angry Nerd was married let alone have a child? Man I've been missing out lol he fully his kid will be into video games like him
Oh ok I see James likes to keep his personal life low key I can respect that. Tnx for the reply
***** Angry Video Game Kid could be a thing in the future.
Though, instead of bad game reviews would most likely be a kid getting angry at a video game for having a difficulty.
I tried playing Doom for the snes with the super advantage; it felt like I was operating construction equipment
Why don't they move the couch closer?
I always come back to this video to see 7:00 it cracks me up every time. Especially when Mike starts grunting shortly afterward and then loses it. Probably picturing what James said beforehand. xD Ahh, these guys are hilarious together.
Why can't you select Bimmy?
TheCausalParadox He's only available in Super Ultra Double Dragon II Turbo Edition.
9:53 "I'm not here eating donuts" ~Mike Matei
Anyone else disappointed that Billy wasn't named Bimmy in this game?
i was a lot more entertained than if i played the game myself. well done guys, great vid
James is such a noob.. lmao. Look at the way he is just mindlessly mashing all the buttons.. i bet the reason why the game reset was because he pressed some combination of the buttons or just reset due to input overload.. lol
James isn't even trying to do any moves. If you're gonna mindless mash buttons, you should play tekken/MK or something rather than street fighter type games(not counting the vs games/series.. like xmen vs street fighter) .
No wonder they prefer MK to SF. All you had to do in MK 1 was jump kick, uppercut, and be able to do 1 special move(like subzero's fireball or scorpions get over here rope etc).
this was one of my favourite arcade games growing up
Best J&M in a while. Both of them got really into it and it was super fun to watch. This and Mortal Kombat X have been pretty good actually.
"What are these moves you pulling out here?, I'm sitting here eating donuts" -Mike , Mike is hilarious in this one.
