I appreciate your footage. The mainstream news is not doing a good job of showing where the damage is. This is really hard to watch. So many trips up and down these streets. This makes it seem more real because I have had a hard time wrapping my head around this. Thank you.

One way to protect homes from fire. 40 plus years ago my uncle saved his house in West Malibu from fire this way. He was a produce farmer with his home overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway on a bluff above his fields. He had surrounded his house with heavy duty irrigation sprinklers when the fire threatened he turned on the sprinkler system powered by a diesel pumping system drawing water from his pond and evacuated. The heat from the fire wind was so intense that posts on the fence around his house caught fire but the sprinklers which ran for perhaps an hour or less cooled the house roof and air so it was saved with no damage. This system worked for him several times. After the land was sold and sprinkler system removed another fire destroyed the house. Perhaps there needs to be irrigation type sprinkler systems installed bordering communities that in a emergency can soak the roofs and drop the air temp for the short time needed for the fire to pass.

If people complain that someone didn't do enough to save their house, tell them to suit up and go into hell themselves because that is what this was. I find it fascinating that while most of the burned structures are completely devastated, that the fronds on the palm trees, and the leaves on many other trees and other bushes while scorched seemed to have largely survived. I presume that this because the spread of the fire was by wind driven embers that needed to land in parts in the building where the wind would not blow them away as well as moisture in the living leaves and fronds making them harder to ignite.

Embers were blown against the eves where there are soffit vents. They are covered with a screen designed to keep rodents and birds out, but not embers. Once the embers were in the attics combining with old insulation, nothing could be done. There are vents designed to prevent ember penetration and they are more expensive than standard vents. They should be required by code in these areas when rebuilding begins.

As I was into this video, I decided to take note for hydrants along your route! Where are they? I saw 1 at an intersection. So many buildings, so few hydrants! Do they hide them due to aesthetics? After all, it is California! Sad to see people suffer such complete loss because they put their trust in the hands of incompetents!!
I had a house fire over 30 years ago. Living in a very rural area, the closest fire station was 20 mi. away. When they did arrive my neighbor offered up his pond for the firemen to use. It's what saved my house from a complete ruin!
