The thing that worries me the most, is how so many people actually believe this. I'm afraid that this will warp others perception of the world, and help create more hatred and misogyny. I know Hooman isn't the only one, but part of a much bigger problem that needs to be stopped.

I find it quite horrifying that in practice sometimes it simply doesn't work to just break up when someone wants to break up. Everybody needs to be able to just say that it's over for a relationship to be over, but that's just not the case. I know a woman who lived with her longtime boyfriend and their two children in an apartment that the boyfriend (well, then ex-boyfriend) simply refused to move out of after she'd broken up with him. She lived with him for another *year* after that. With her ex-boyfriend she wanted of course to be actually broken up with and therefore also wanted to not live with anymore. He never hit her or anything. But of course what he did was a for of psychological domestic violence! I even adviced her to get help from an organization she would also get help from if he beat her up constantly. It just wasn't stereotypical violence what he did and he probably didn't realize what he was doing, but that didn't and doesn't matter. Now that I'm writing this I remember that about five years before this break-up, before they had children or were living together, but when he already had a key to her and her roommates' apartment, she tried to break up with him and demanded the key to her apartment back. He refused and she then understandably felt the need to tell one or both of her male roommates not to let her boyfriend in. As in, to throw him out of the apartment should he/they come home and find the boyfriend/ex-boyfriend (hard to tell) in their apartment. I really can't tell if they were broken up for a short time back then or not, since she then referred to it as only having *tried* to break up with her boyfriend.
I hope you're getting closer to being able to recognize and exercise your right to just end a relationship whenever you want to end it, no matter how "good" or "bad" a reason you have to want to do it. I never was in a romantic relationship I wouldn't have been able to leave even if I'd wanted to, but I have been in other kinds of "unwanted relationships" where I couldn't just leave for - let's say - logistical/financial/administrative reasons and couldn't stand up for myself between realizing I wanted to leave and actually being able to leave. Because the people who made me want to leave were so good at terrorizing me psychologically.
I am in no way criticizing you, by the way. Even without my own experiences I would know at least in a more abstract sense that things often really aren't as easy as they seem.
@@camelopardalis84 well the reason he didn't want to break up with me was because didn't want "being dumped" in his relationship CV. So I had to wait a week or two until he was ready to end things himself. He wanted written in his relationship CV "I cheated on her and I dumped her. She didn't dump me".
