    It's advertised as digital saxophone, it's described as a practice saxophone, it's in a saxophone body with real saxophone keys, it looks like a saxophone - so guess which sound is NOT included in the Respiro software that comes with the digital saxophone - yep, you're right, the sound of a saxophone. Emeo claim in their manual, "Note that we did not put a saxophone sound in the collection - we did this on purpose, to emphasise that we are not trying to make the Emeo sound like a conventional saxophone." What sound do they think someone buying a saxophone of any sort would like to hear? And they clearly think the average sax player splashing out $1500 is of such low intelligence to realise that it's not a real saxophone or that they won't mind paying out even more to get the full Respiro suite so that they can make the the most expensive digital saxophone on the market actually sound like a saxophone.

    • @ninjaaron
      @ninjaaron ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's because digital saxophone patches sound like crap. No saxophone patch has yet been created that would ever come close to satisfying a sax player.

    It looks interesting, however like others have mentioned, without embouchure development, articulation and voicing it cannot be a practice sax, as this is imho the very beating heart of what it means to play the saxophone. Maybe even the very notion of a practice sax is impossible! Yes you can work on finger technique, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to constantly dissociate this from what it takes to actually produce the sound as tone production and finger technique work together (unless you’re getting daily practice on a real sax to ‘keep it real’). I think it’s best to describe the EMEO as a realistic feeling (in terms of finger mechanism) saxophone design electronic instrument, and that’s totally fine.

    What do Emeo say regarding servicing the mechanism, do you just leave it for life? My second question would be does it have a mechanical octave key? I couldn't see an octave pip. Loving the Katana stand too. Looks like a dream evening practice sax.

    • @saxworldwide
      @saxworldwide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Although the EMEO uses a real saxophone mechanism, you shouldn't need it serviced, as it's not important for the pads to seal. If for whatever reason the keywork did need adjusting, a saxophone technician could do this for you. Yes, the octave mechanism is mechanical and feels exactly like a real sax! It's a fantastic bit of kit!

    To be honest I think this thing just doesn't have a market. You can get a travel sax which has all the same features except the keywork is a little bit further away from feeling like a real sax. No digital sax currently on the market is going to be able to properly emulate how it feels to blow into a sax, do the articulation and create the sound. So all these tools are just good for working on your fingering technique. So why get an emeo for 1800€ that weighs smth like 1.5 kg when you can get a travel sax for 500€ that weighs 400g, is smaller and almost as good? really don't see why that one extra mile the emeo is going should be worth a grant

    Not only an incredible instrument, but the Founder and Team at Emeo are outstanding. I was originally hesitant about ordering something overseas without any idea of the overall quality and support and it has actually far surpassed my wildest dreams. Kudos to Oleg et al. They have developed the greatest digital sax and provide support that every other company should strive to achieve. BTW, I loved it so much that I now have two Emeo’s. Get one while you still can. They are going to become the standard in the industry and I bet they will become difficult to obtain.

    • @pfylim

      Nope. They don't even have bite control. If you need to develop this skill you need to find another breath controller. If you play Jazz forget this device. For the price they are asking for this it is an unacceptable exclusion. If they were so passionate they should have included one.

    This is cool and I'm always happy to see more innovation in the digital sax realm, but I don't really see the point in using a 'real' metal sax body. Sure it makes it look cool but it also makes it very heavy and very expensive. I have a Yamaha YDS-150 and one of the things I love about it is that it's super light (because it can be) so I can practice for hours on end without my hands, arms and neck getting sore. It's also half the cost of the Emeo.

  • @idomusics

    Why don't these digital saxophone manufaturers partner with Swam engine so they have some realistic sounds and articulations. This sounds like the "Saxophone" sound from an old Casio keyboard. Or a Yamaha PSR 17😂

      @saxworldwide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just answered the same comment above - take a look, but briefly, I find that the genuine mechanism of the EMEO trumps the more plasticy feel of the YDS. Jim

    • @SamChaneyProductions
      @SamChaneyProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The YDS is half the cost, and it's also super light which makes it great for long practice sessions. True, it does feel a bit 'plasticy' but I'd rather have that than something that's heavy for no reason. Neither of them have any embouchure/lip pressure detection, just air detection, so neither are going to help with intonation or embouchure, but both would help a lot with fingering and a little with exercising your chops

You can also use it as a MIDI controlled and play the bass, piano, drums, anything in your MIDI libraries. You can even plug it into your laptop or an audio interface, with head phones, and play/record anywhere with no one hearing you play a single note as you record...very useful.🎷🎧🎛🎚🎹

    Can you add vibrato with mouthpiece pressure? What about tonguing and articulation? Without that it's a hard no.

    • @pneumasax
      @pneumasax 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tonguing and articulation, yes. Vibrato via lip, no but you can do a diaphragmatic Vibrato.

    • @Garflips
      @Garflips 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If by tonguing you mean the effect of a short burst of air pressure, yes. But in no way does it interpret the acoustic effect of tonguing a real reed instrument when you place your tongue on the tip of the reed an alter your embouchure. The only expression controller you have is air pressure. The EMEO is for practicing your finger dexterity but will do nothing for practicing your embouchure. That said it sure looks like a super instrument for doing just that and very well made. But if your main goal is to play a virtual synthesizer and make it sound organic and extremely expressive then you want a controller that offers the ability to output more expressive control information. However this gets into MIDI and MIDI continuous controllers and is just not a rabbit hole everybody wants to step into - or needs to - if their primary instrument is an acoustic reed instrument and you desire a compact practice aid. BTW the Respiro software really shines when you have a wind controller manipulating it with several expression sources such as bite pressure, mod wheel, lip pressure, glide control - you name it.

  • @guruconsult6686

    Thanks for the great data. It seemed to me that this ins (no strument) at all of the points you play it, is void of top end (treble, if you will) and adds a reverb or digital time delay, "extending" the reach (time related) of the sounds. You indicate that the instrument produces no sound of its own, but requires an independent source to achieve it. My concern is: can the these "effects" be eliminated via the use of a program that can control them by allowing the upper end of the audio spectrum to appear on each tone, and can each tone "appear" without the apparent "extended" signal, or must the player live with that forever? Thanks again and have a wonderful holiday season.

    I hope it's much better than the Yamaha offering.

    Gubbins?!!! Love that word! I wonder why the first sax synth made didn't look like this? Seems so logical. Is it solar powered?!

    • @saxworldwide
      @saxworldwide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, no - it has a rechargeable lithium polymer battery. You can either fast charge it by plugging the cable into a mains charging block, or it will charge while you have it plugged into your computer.

    I'd like to see a comparison of this vs the Yamaha YDS150. Is the EMEO really worth more than twice the price?

    • @saxworldwide
      @saxworldwide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      David, to me it feels quite different to the YDS-150. Personally I find that the plastic keys on the YDS-150 don't provide the same lively and natural response that you get from the EMEO. It's amazing the difference an actual saxophone body and mechanism makes in terms of how it performs for you. Cheers, Jim

    Can you put a "reed" mouth piece instead of the standard mouth piece coming with the instrument?

    • @pneumasax
      @pneumasax 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. it also comes with an alto mouthpiece.

    It would have been nice to hear the simulated “genuine” saxophone sound (I.e, alto, tenor, soprano and bari) as opposed to other electronic sound.

      At the time of recording the version of Respiro that I was using didn't have any sax patches, although this might be something you see in the future. Personally, I don't mind it not replicating the sax sound as you might find that you're missing something when it comes to re-creating all the elements that make a natural sax sound. I've never heard a good one yet! That's why I prefer to get into the synth (and other sounds) world. Jim

    I'm not buying one because I'd have to remember the brand and model of my headphones, computer, phone, and software to answer, "Hey, man, what's your EMEO setup?"
