This was the only tractor I haven't done an operating video on so far. Subscribe to How Farms Work ► bit.ly/XYVvDd Facebook ► on. YpS8oH How Farms Work Store ► bit.ly/HFWStore
Thanks for this vid!!! I would love to see more of these and also some redo's of the older ones if you have time!!! I like it when you can do 1st person with the gopro and headstrap. Thanks for all the work put into this channel!
I didn't understand what you meant by quad range until the end when you explained the ranges. Now I get that you have to stop to change between them. So, 4 unsycronyzed ranges, plus 12 powershift, 23 syncro, and 34 powershift.
nice!sounds bit complicated though..i've driven was a Ford 5000 with just a simple manual transmission gear 1-4 and Reverse opposite gear 2.Ploughing was done on gear 1(i din't know at what revs though because 1.the tachometer did not work and 2.I was just happy to drive it soo bad i didn't want to learn or care about technicalities) and when planting I would use gear 2 and move a bit faster....happy teen moments!
They did the MPH and KPH because of the Canadian distributors and European Distributors. Depending on what year, it was just cheaper to print one plate/sticker instead of printing one per region. Since the standard production run was from 1978 to 82, it made quite a bit of sense to just keep things fairly standard. Lower the costs. Why? Because these were the quiet ride cabs and they had just come out. So you needed something uniform that just matched as many of the models as you were making. Not to go off the rails too much.
I know how to drive a 3020 power shift, a 4020 & 4620 without power shift & also some Farmall tractors. Other than that I have never driven the newer tractors
The 4640 and the 4840 are the same size the only difference the 4840 has just a little more horsepower but I would just get a 4840 and call it a day I like the full powershift
I know that tractor was built in the late 70's or very early 80's.What I don't understand is why buy the 4640 instead of the 4840 and be done with it?.Is there alot more money between those two models or what?.I know the 4640 puts out 160 hp.,the 4840 puts out 180 hp.Another 20 horsepower isn't much of a difference.
+How Farms Work I'm talking about the 4640 versus the 4840.(I know of a certain 4440 that has over 500 hp under the hood,it has mods up the ying, yang)If these two models are only 20 hp apart, why bother buying the 4640,instead of the 4840 and be done with it.
It's the differential lock. Press it, and it locks the differential so that both axles are locked together to give yourself more traction when needed. It's released by pressing on either of the brake pedals.
Great video. Grew up in the 80s driving a 4640 just like this. Pulled a grain cart, Miller disk, chisel and a springtooth. It was a great tractor.
I just love listening to those tractors shift. Nothin better than hearing that tractor rev up. I grew up riding in those and it never gets old

The quad range is the partial powershift and they also have a full powershift 8 speed
Do operate john deere 4440
"yeah I don't know what that was " at the end lol total honesty, much appreciated throughout all your videos!
Here because farming simulator 22 just came out and I had no idea how to operate this kind of transmission, thanks!! Very informative!!!
We had a 4630 Loved that Tractor also had a 4230 that was the first tractor i learned how to drive.
Quad shift...drove them a many a day over 30 yrs ago...I like the 8 power shift model...no clutching on shifts
Great video and explanation, but could someone advise which banks of hydralics are operated by which levers in the cab please ?
I ran a 4640 before disking in the mud and it didn't do to good. Great vid.
Thanks. I just bought a 4630 and this helps.

Quad range is partial power shift because of the change of gears from 1&2 and 3&4 is power shift and the rest are not.
Do you have any recent video on the 4440 tractor? Thank for your videos 👍
Hey,
Greetings from Germany :)
That is a really interesting gearshift. Would be very interesting to drive with..
Nice vid, I enjoyed!
SPQR XXVI **puts that in a car**
I drove 4230 in Marion south C the transmission was on good.

I would love to volunteer to work farm again, I have worked on farm since teenage years
Another great how to video
Always wanted a quad range tractor, but we bought a synchro range instead, that thing was hard to get used to ngl

Brings back happy memories of driving one in the eighties!
Does yours have a foot throttle?

Ryan we have 2 of them 1 has extreme freeze damage and the other has a burnt electrical system and was a parts donor t the other one.
mainelinerailvideos© WE also got 2 One with a quad range and a Big injector pump ( betsy) and one with a powershift needs lower engine work ($16000in both)
Operated one of these on a farm when I was 13!

You could also do a how to operate on your combine.
Great vid love it

Wasn't the syncro about hell to learn😂
I like the powershift better on the older tractors it is very simple
Yeah the old powershifts are great we have a powershift 4440 and it's my favorite tractor.
Does your seat slide back and fourth can you do a Tutorial on how to lock it in place because my labels on the seat are in Spanish
Find a picture of english labels on the internet

Not to go off the rails too much.
I like the the front window tray, is that a deere part or after market?
That's after market, it is pretty nice.

I know how to drive a 3020 power shift, a 4020 & 4620 without power shift & also some Farmall tractors. Other than that I have never driven the newer tractors
yes it is
Don`t you in the USA need regestration plates on your tractores? we in Norway do.
(Sorry for my bad english)
Håkon Brynestad no registration plates, only a slow moving sign (orange triangle), same rule here in Canada.
Yea it is
Here in the UK, we have foot throttles.
The 4640 and the 4840 are the same size the only difference the 4840 has just a little more horsepower but I would just get a 4840 and call it a day I like the full powershift
Do you guys still have the 4440?
No
Wieso handgas ? Hat der Trecker kein Fußgas ?

+4 gauge this one is putting out over 200, so no power concerns there.

no the 4840 puts out about 220hp and the 4640 does bout 180, 4640 are more common aswell
4 gauge l
4 gauge I've not seen a 4840 without powershift . Perhaps the 4640 with more gears fits a person's applications better.
Yours has the same gauge cleaner that mine has! How about that.
The petal at 4:45 what exactly do ?

+45Deere9500. Thanks a lot men. We all love JD
You are wrong on the ranges if your not under load it shifts easily between ranges and does not harm anything ,you must clutch thought .
we got a power shift 4640
y'all have a 4440 4020 8232 (correct me if I'm wrong) a 7400 and a 4640
