The Tsunami wall in this video would be helpful under "normal" circumstances, but not for such a cataclysmic event, such as that day. At least they have high ground within close proximity, along the Japanese coast. Where I live on the Oregon coast, the closest hills are a half mile away.
Almost 10yrs later and these videos still leave me speechless. It really is unimaginable what the people of Japan went through that day as well as the months and years following. I've been watching a lot of clips from this tsunami recently. This town had the best tsunami defenses I've seen yet, and even those were woefully inadequate sadly. It gives me some perspective of how powerful this tsunami was. It rose over those high walls in a matter of a minute. Crazy.
Well the first problem is that they didn't build a seawall, they built a concrete wall around the beach and a marina on the other side. Seawalls are built in the water for a reason.
Sadly it wouldn't matter how high the wall was... you can't hold back a large volume of water with a wall. When it hits a wall it just rises higher and higher until it either breaks the wall or over-tops it.
It's 2022 and we're still in the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic, but footage of this day's horrors are still the most terrifying moments I've ever seen. I hope Japan is recovering well despite all of the irreplaceable losses.

I really get the impression that sea walls are not the answer here. I heard about one town in the tsunami zone that chose to relocate to a higher level rather than build a higher sea wall. I imagine just waiting for the water to come in, after the water drained away. The Japanese are great people who have suffered so much from this tragedy. We had a small earthquake today where I am in Poplar Bluff, MO, & my fear made me consider this event again. Be well Japan!
Yes, it really is very helpful to us when good people like this risk their lives so we can know what happened and HOW it happened. These video's are more helpful than people think. I remember growing up and hearing about tsunami's (called tidal waves where I lived), but we never SAW video of them until later on when technology permitted it. One question though, how did we "mess with mother nature"? You implied human did something to cause this particular event. Just wondering what it was???
@ Malcolm Cullen I think I've found it: "Sugoi" - means “horrible” or “threatening”. This can be used in good or bad meaning. The sense that the Japanese use of the word "Sugoi" derives from that feeling of horrible excitement you feel when you’re confronted with something so overwhelming that your brain just stops to marvel at it.
So true,, I camped and rode a motorcycle through all of flooded areas prior in 2006-2008. We were aware of the tidal wave dangers and took them seriously but had no idea that the water would move so many buildings and go so high.
7:32 really puts it in perspective, the water on the other side of the barrier, being the same level on the other side! scary stuff! Then 8:50 the second wave! even more scary!. so many people dead. So sad.
Who else yells for the people driving the cars to get to higher ground? They appear to be oblivious to what is coming. Ignore the sirens at your own peril. It breaks my heart.

I've seen this before. I'm not sure I can watch it again.
Blessings to Japan from the USA. our countries have suffered much this year, 2018.
Who Cares!!! You think they gave a Shit at Pearl Harbor?????
@ You're sick.
@ Almost 80 years ago! How many 100+ y.o. "theys" are alive who could have even participated in the attack? Another "stable genius."

Nature is something else, my heart goes out to the people of Japan.
years later and still heartbreaking to watch.
Yeah man 😭

My heart and prayers go out to anyone hurt by this horrible tragedy.
What a truly sad date... Japan will never forget... lessons learned. RIP to all who lost their lives.
Impressionante! Lamentável pra com os irmãos japoneses! Nós cariocas sentimos muito essa tragédia.

Watching the cove fill back up with water like a bath tub was chilling. No where to hide.
Nowhere but up
God Bless all those people affected by this event.

When some people are confronted by an awesome act of mother nature they are left speechless,....then there is this guy.

This is an amazing display of the power of water. I wish I had not been catastrophic to the people

IT is 9 yers ago , but still my heart are bleeding for the Japanese people who were facing these oful kaos.
The most insane eyewitness video out there. My god that must have been terrifying.
There are many insane eyewitness videos of this tsunami. 20,000 people were killed and $360 billion in damages. They are all shockingly tragic.
Man there's just no shortage of disheartening videos of this destruction. My greatest condolences to the people of Japan.
So true,, I camped and rode a motorcycle through all of flooded areas prior in 2006-2008. We were aware of the tidal wave dangers and took them seriously but had no idea that the water would move so many buildings and go so high.
Incredible amount of energy!!! Terrible situation!!! God bless you all!
7:32 really puts it in perspective, the water on the other side of the barrier, being the same level on the other side! scary stuff! Then 8:50 the second wave! even more scary!. so many people dead. So sad.
that was actually the 3rd wave. not the 2nd
I think he was probably a very powerful local and he felt helpless for the 1st time ever and it made him a little more vocal.
He was the Mayor!
I think he was getting emotional, because he saw lifetimes of work by his friends, families, and neighbors being destroyed in mere minutes.
