    A lot of locals hate videos like these because they don't want to share their fishing spots.
    But I have to thank you for doing this video and sharing your expirience with us.
    I have been living in Florida for almost 20 years and I haven't found a detailed video like this. Thanks

      Hey Mario, yes, I understand, it happens where I live too. The intent of this video wasn’t focused on location for that reason, although I did mention a few spots, none of them are secrets by any means. There may still be a few people who are miffed, but the amount of people the video will help far exceeds them I believe!

      My grandfather owns The Bait Box on Sanibel Island and if you have any respect for the island you will take this video down this is ridiculous my great-grandmother made her living off of being a the first woman fishing guide on that island and owns half of the island .... Don't go down Dixie Beach Road or Woodring Rd. You probably will never be seen again

    I started fishing Sanibel about the same time as you. The second snook I caught was 32" on a spoon. I have been hooked ever since. We go once or twice a year now. Heading there in Sept. You are right about the snook being right at your feet on the beach. I was running a paddle tail in the trough and a decent snook hit it just feet in front of me and a guy came up to me and said "I can't believe that fish was right there". I fished all those spots you have shown in this video. Great advice.

    Thanks for posting this video...super informative. I fish freshwater (bass, walleye, salmon, steelhead, catfish, etc.) in the Great Lakes region and was not familiar with the typical go-to rigs used in SW FL. I have 2 pre-teen sons that love to fish...the Carolina rigs will be perfect for them and I fish that rig in freshwater quite often. I had no idea which lb test line to use or which rigs were typically the best down there until I saw your video. I have a residence down there so I visit SW FL regularly...have my FL fishing license with snook, lobster, etc. attached to the license. Less familiar with the regs down there but your video answered a lot of questions I had. So many thanks again for taking the time to post this!

    Heading to Captiva tomorrow and really appreciate what you did putting this together. Took me quite a while to learn some of the quirks of saltwater fishing and I just love surf fishing now. One little thing I would add about the hooks, especially for live bait and jigs, always tie a loop knot as it will allow for a much more natural looking action. It seriously makes a big difference with snook. Another thing that really seems to matter a lot is to pause retrieving occasionally. Wish you all the best fishing in the future!

    Great vid and what's funny is I'm watching this as we just got back from Sanibel yesterday and I cannot wait to go back.
    From the beach by our condo we caught Snook, Sea Trout, lots of small Jack, Spanish Mackerel, Ladyfish, Whiting, catfish, and a fish I haven't identified yet. Someone next to us caught a big black tip shark. In my experience you can consistently catch fish with more size on the island if you go to a few others spots I won't mention vs fishing where everyone swims, but it's very convenient when my wife and kids are shelling. Used a J-hook to start and the fish were swallowing it into their gut. Had this issue using frozen shrimp but not really with live. Switched to a circle hook and only had 1 Jack swallow it down (I just cut the line vs killing it). So circle hooks for me the rest of my days fishing in Florida!
    Also threw a Johnson Splinter silver spoon when I ran out of bait and was having a lot of luck. I actually prefer this at times because they absolutely crush the spoon and it feels more like fishing vs just sitting in my chair.

    So appreciate all of the information provided in this video. Leaving in one week for Sanibel. Will be our third trip upcoming. I am an avid midwest angler (we live on Buckeye Lake in central Ohio) and although I am fairly new to gulf/back bay fishing I have managed to catch a few snook, reds, trout and jacks in my two previous trips. However, I only threw a swimbait. I will definitely be trying some live bait and cut bait using the egg sinker rig you recommended also. Have only fished Blind Pass, the Sanibel Pier and the Eastern Beach area by our condo. You mentioned Ding Darling so I'll likely try there this trip. Any other hotspots to try this time of year?

      Glad I could help out brother! If you can get near pilings on docks or bridges or the causeway there is likely to be quite a few sheepshead moving in right now. They are pretty much exclusively crustacean eaters so shrimp and crabs are the best bait for them.

      It certainly works both ways. I typically won’t let it sit for more than 5 minutes before slowly retrieving it and checking the bait. Little fish love to pick off the shrimp and then it’s sitting there useless.

    Hey great video! I had a question. For the fish finder rig, you do an egg sinker to a swivel and that swivel has some fluro leader onto it. However, why on the other side of the swivel (the side with the egg sinker not the hook) why do you put fluro leader? Thanks

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mainly for less line visibility and also abrasion resistance when fishing around structure. Flouro is much more abrasion resistant than braid and I find if a leave more above my sinker I don’t break off as often. When I’m fishing snook around pilings I will actually splice in about 15-20’ of heavy mono above my rig, it holds up on the pilings much better than braid and also stretches like a rubber band.

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any time the current is super ripping I like to use lead spoons for artificial. Almost anything will eat them if you let them fall to the bottom and the rip-pause-rip-pause back. They are heavy enough to stay down too. Pink is always a good color. Obviously for live bait you need to go heavier with your weights to stay down. Go up to 2 0z if you have to. If you can’t keep the bait down in the current I would cast up-current and then let it drift down through and repeat. I’ve had lots of success doing that as well.

    Wouldn't waste money on fluorocarbon leader it's not worth the money. Being someone who does a lot of fishing in Florida I can tell you that your throwing your money away. 30lb Braid is some what usable but when it comes to Snook and Tarpon and Grouper and Redfish and Black Drum depending on the size Bait your running a risk of getting broke off if you don't keep the fish away from structures.

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good points! I’ve used both mono and flourocarbon but I still prefer flouro for the slight visibility and abrasion resistance benefits. Mono is definitely cheaper though! And yes, if you are targeting bigger fish around structure, 30lb braid is going to lose you some fish. I prefer 50-80 lb braid and 50 lb leader in those cases. I also will sometimes tie on a 20’ long 50lb mono leader when fishing around structure for big fish. The mono doesn’t get cut by barnacles nearly as fast as braid. That being said, this is a beginner video designed to just get people out catching fish. I may film another one this April with a few more advanced techniques like these in it!

  • @RH-qk5lt

    Very Good informational video for beginners. A few comments. The 14 lb drag on a 40 President reel has proven over the years to not be enough and the quality just isn't a good choice. Love em for Wisconsin walleye on GB, Castle Rock, Petenwell, WI. River...but not in the salt. Personal preference here but If you've not compared the Daiwa BG to the battle ii , I recommend you give them a shot. . Less weight, slightly smoother and equal quality. Daiwa Fuego is another very good option. Live Pin fish, are another very good bait option that is sometimes available at bait shops. The best travel rod I've found is the Fenwick HMG travel spinning rods. Drifting cut bait or shrimp under a float along mangroves or slow moving passes is another great presentation. Mono is proven to be more abrasion resistant than fluorocarbon. See Salt Strong's video. It's interesting.
    Question, How do you take your insulated bait cooler on a plane? Can you just carry it on?
    If you've never fished the Matlacha bridge, rented a kayak from Gulf Coast kayaks in Matlacha or fished off the Bokeelia pier on Pine Island I highly recommend these three locations. Again, good video. And I also wish 15 years ago I had the ability to watch your video and read these added comments. Ya got a new subscriber.

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the detailed comment! Yes, this video was intended for beginners but I am hoping to film a follow-up video this coming spring to include a lot of answers to questions in the comments and more information on fishing mangroves and some other options inshore like you mentioned. There is just so much to cover but I will definitely try to address some of the things you mentioned. As far as the President, I agree it’s not going to hold up to a big fish near cover but for surf fishing and basic “vacation” fishing for a $50 reel it does ok. And yes, I’ve caught a ton of fish on live pin fish, including my PB redfish. I may go over cast netting and sabiki rigs in my next video but that’s a great point! As far as the bait cooler, we are lucky enough to have a storage unit I. Fort meters where we store all our fishing gear, however one thing we have done is put a full-sized igloo cooler on the plane full of fishing gear and just taped it up and checked it as a bay. You can fit the Engel inside…. Then when we come back from FL we put all our frozen fillets back in the cooler and check it on the plane on the way back full of fish. Works awesome!

      I intentionally did not get specific about spots in this video for that reason. Obviously some people may figure it out from the footage, but it’s pretty hard to make a video with no footage.
