    I love the use of color in this movie. When they are in her world, Edith is the delicate beauty and Thomas and his sister are the ones out of place....as seen here with Lucille's vibrant red dress among a sea of soft whites and pinks. When Edith goes into their world, the roles are switched. Lucille is the one who is in her element and Edith is the one who doesn't belong there as seen by the colors she wears....the golds. And as she gets weaker, those golds fade to her wearing pure white. The only time the two worlds merge is when Edith and Thomas have their love scene alone. I also like the use of the ring indicating who has power. The ring was originally warn by Lucille's mother when she had power and then by Lucille. When Edith took the ring, she had power over Lucille, but Lucille taking the ring back was a deliberate way of her saying "I am in power now" when Edith learned their seceet.

      and in the dance scene, Edith wears a big black bow, that's lopsided. Showing that while she is a part of that society and tries her best to fit in there's always something at her back excluding her.

    I just love how he made it clear that she was the one in his eyes, and not any of the arrogant peacocks who looked down on her.
    Despite the way the story went, he stood up for her, and gave her the courage to hold her head up.
    I could have sworn he melted when she said that she wanted to keep her eyes open, because it showed how much she trusted him.
    I just love how they were looking into each other's eyes during the entire dance.

      Totally agree. The hem of the dress looks like a large blood stain on the floor right at Lucille’s feet, which is to be seen as the dark omen of the future events.

    • @motionlesskilljoy
      @motionlesskilljoy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@annaq8537 And the very structure of the dress itself could perhaps almost allude to the fact that Lucille was indeed a living ghost, so deeply entrenched in the sins of her past and the tragedies that struck her and her brother to the point that she never found emotional closure and sought to use her own emotional trauma as a means to justify her plans to murder each of the women that Thomas married (which could also serve as a foreshadowing of her destiny as she is fated to become a grief-stricken and deeply unhappy ghost because she cemented her own path in blood). She also looks as though her body and silohuette are completely drenched in blood and in the characteristic red clay which nestles and decays the foundation of Allerdale Hall, meaning that she is both completely emotionally and spiritually tethered to the confines of her ancestral home and is deeply committed to her mission of preserving the family's societal standing, even if it means that ensuring her goal would require a bloodbath paved in the lives of so many women. It also seems to be an inversion of the emotional emapthy and profound kindness that characterizes Edith (and I do personally believe that she is a dark mirror of her) because in Edith's case, she is completely shameless in her expressions of emotional vulnerability, has a fiercely gentle heart and is highly observant and compassionate, whereas Lucille's presence feels obtrusive and entirely visually unnerving because she is someone who presents herself publicly and manipulates the perceptions of others to make them feel that at her very core, she is just as how Edith comes across naturally but in a different way and I think that this particular juxtaposition between both of their characters is highly fascinating. I have also observed that both Edith and Lucille share innumerable similarities in terms of their core charactersitics and personalities as characters, however in Lucille's case, these traits have been negatively amplified and morally corrupted to show the possibility of what Edith could have potentially become. They both lost their mothers at a very young age (with Edith losing her mother to Cholera and Lucille because of her own doing), are both deeply gifted artists and storytellers (Edith through the narratives that she creates as a novelist and Lucille as a musical composer and pianist), they both love the same man, (though Edith's love is completely unconditional, healthy and forgiving whereas Lucille's definition of love is perturbing and completely erred and possesive), and they are highly educated, voracious readers and scholars (what makes the ingenuity of Lucille's character so very amazing is the fact that she is composed, highly calculating and intelligent yet she is capable of so much brutality and malice) which allows them to be many steps ahead of their peers and even their own family members intellectually-wise. I also think that the core reason why Lucille despises Edith so much, is because of the fact that she potentially embodies everything that Lucille once was and the promise of what she could have become had she lived a trauma-free and stable life. Like Amy Dunne from "Gone Girl", she wears her blood with pride and revels in it and this is completely reflected in the manner in which she presents herself confidently in the Crimson red dress. Lucille's wardrobe represents the "Ghost of Loss, Revenge and Sorrow" whereas Edith's wardrobe visually represents "The Ascended Ghost" and is almost dressed like a historical martyr towards the final act of the film. It is also important to note that the way in which Edith is styled towards the end of the film makes reference to the fact that she is almost completely "doll-like" and that Lucille sees her as "the final kill" or "the final trophy in her collection", someone to be displayed as and disposed of as a doll.

      The part with the hostess “talking down” to Edith seems catty and out of place. If Edith’s father was invited, she (his unmarried daughter still living with her father) was implicitly invited as well. No decent “upper crust” great society lady would insult a male guest by excluding his daughter. Even if Edith wasn’t invited, basic good manners would have required her to graciously overlook it. I think it’s gratuitous bad writing intended to make the Baronet look less awful for snubbing the hostess’ daughter.

    It took me several viewings to understand that Edith was never Tom and Lucille’s target for marriage, it was Eunice McMichael (Alan’s bitchy redhead sister). Edith was never part of the plan. Tom chose her after he met her at Mr. Cushing’s office. This movie has so many layers, I love it.

    Couldn't take this movie seriously and never understood exactly why for years, now that's I'm reflecting on it I think the style collided awkwardly with its confused genre... it felt like a horror movie made by disney, some parts felt like a music video, there were creepy scenes, creepy effects, creepy monsters but the unmatching style overshadowed all that and chocked the scary factor out of everything, by the end of the movie I simply didn't know what to feel...
