I'm going on 3 years with my loc journey and I'm a loctitian. I'd say it matters most especially before your locs are fully mature. Whatever goes in your locs stays IN your locs. The more mature your locs are, the more solid they are and the less porous they tend to be. The safest thing is to dilute your shampoo enough that it's a watery consistency and will wash out COMPLETELY. It also helps save you coins, so it's a win-win. I would only add to be sure to use the purest water you can lay your hands on in diluting your shampoo, especially if that bottle of shampoo isn't going to finish any time soon. That way you avoid bacteria multiplying in your shampoo and causing scalp issues. Also, if you're anything less than a year in, I'd stay away from anything that doesn't say clarifying (or deeply cleansing) on the front of the bottle.
ETA: Okay, so if you're not fully locked yet, 1ce a week shampooing is a bit too much. Unless you work out a lot, or it's been recommended by your dermatologist, washing just before reties is best for the first 6-9 months, or until your locs settle. Definitely stay away from moisturizing shampoos. If you sweat a lot on your scalp, it's okay to pop in the shower and rinse your scalp thoroughly using water ONLY (after braiding and banding of course). This way you avoid drying your scalp out with shampoos, but get to keep your scalp and hair clean and odor-free.

Love the video. I’m 8 weeks in and I’m enjoying my microloc journey. I agree that we should help educate people so they’ll have a better understanding of the journey. That’ll help them not to cross boundaries that need not to be crossed. Thanks for the pointers.

Hello @Jacqueline Dixon! Yes ma’am! It may not be our fault that folks don’t know, but we sure can educate them. I’m so glad you’re enjoying your loc journey! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. 😁

Giovanni's 50/50 shampoo is awesome on locs. Can't go wrong with any of them in that haircare line.

Great advice sis, I learnt my lesson from not braiding and banding, ( now I do it all wash days ), I also tried shampooing without diluting 🥺, lessons learnt, so thanks much for sharing what you've learnt🤗

I enjoyed this conversation. I absolutely agree that sadly it is on us to educate people. That has always been our plight.
I just had my first retie and shampoo at 6 weeks and man did it feel good lol. I think I'm just going to let my loctician handle that for now.

Your hair looks great. Which semi-permanent dye do you use? The way you describe your natural hair color sounds like my hair color. I've been using Jazz'N for about 20 years, but it seems to rinse out much faster during shampoo. p.s. I plan to start my DIY Microlocs in April. My arms are tired just thinking about it. :) Thanks

Hi Daysha! Thank you! I forget the name of the dye, but it is light green and has a picture of a black girl on the box, Lol. I use either black or jet black. I also leave it on longer than the instructions say 😬 I probably should not do that. I’m excited about your upcoming journey! Always remember to “Trust the process!” Thank you for watching! 😁

Good video...BUT...all those different shampoos is way too much! Anything moisturizing is a big NO 👎! That will cause bunching because it will soften the loc. The Clairifiying Shampoo is all you need. Your will do it's own thing! Thick shampoos is too much. Dying your hair within the 1st year will mess with the integrity of your locs. Just spritz with Purified water & oil ONLY YOUR SCALP....NOT THE LOCKS. Your hair is beautiful#

I disagree. I use clarifying shampoo first then a moisturizing shampoo. My hair gets fry too easily and it needs moisture. I think it depends on each person's hair and what it needs. I haven't had any problem with bunching thus far.

Different textures behave how they will no matter what kind of shampoo you use.
