The 88 Bills were a much different team than the 1990-93 AFC Championship teams. They relied more on their defense and running and short passing game than the wide open no huddle offense of a couple years later. The Bills defense was outstanding in 1988

I've noticed that Jim had really no weopons besides Andre. Thurman was a rookie, a good one but still a rookie. Ronnie Harmon and Chris Burkett were not the answers. Both had potential and played well in times but we're too inconsistent

1988 the Bills were a team on the rise from 88-96 they made the playoffs 8 out of nine years including six AFC East Titles and four AFC titles/four Super Bowl Appearnces. That group may never were able to bring home a Super Bowl Trophy but from the late 80's through the early-mid 90's the Bills had great coach Marv Levy and General Manager Bill Polian and they dominated Dan Marino and the Dolphins throughout the 90's as a 49ers fan thanks for sharing the video highlight.

Curse you Berkeley! Had Roger Craig not fumbled, it would've been your Niners we face. I give them no chance against Montana, I'm sending a 28-3 in that case but against Steve Young? I'm sorry but I feel the Bills prevail but who knows lol

Its too bad that Chuck Knox didn't have the personnel that Levy was essentially given. Even with multiple future HOF players, Levy couldn't win ONE Super Bowl. Knox essentially had to do the role of coach and GM and managed to take a losing team to the AFC East Championship in 3 years.

I didn't realize that this was narrated by Chris Berman. I guess that's why no one circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills!

One of the best defensive casts the bills have ever had.

May be my favorite Bills team ever. The defense was so complete and nasty. Very few weaknesses.
The seeds of the 1990s no huddle were there. Kelly, Reed, Thurman, Hull and some of the linemen. Only 4 WRs caught passes that year!
Loved the mix of old timers like Smerlas, Talley, Metzelaars and Riddick finally getting playoff glory. Young guys on the rise and just entering their prime Smith, Bennett, Thurman, Reed, Odomes.
Some terrific additions like Leonard Smith and Art Still before free agency actually started (1989). Former USFL guys adjusted to the NFL like Kelly, Hull and T Johnson.
What a fun team to grow up with! Thanks to all those Bills. Cincy just had this team's number that year. Those losses to Cincy would start Buffalo onto the path of it's own version of the 'No Huddle'.

To me the 2020 bills remind me of the 1988 bills because they reached the AFC championship game and lost

Ronnie Harmon (13:50) would drop a sure TD in a playoff game against the Browns in the 1989 season. The Bills had mounted a huge comeback in this game and the drop came on the 2nd from the last play in that game. Harmon was released after that season.

In Week 16 Cincinnati squeaked out a win against Washington when the Redskins missed a FG on the game's last play of the game (the Bengals went on to win in OT 20-17). If the Bengals had lost that game the Bills would have had the best record in the AFC and hosted the AFC Championship game

I really like the music that's playing at the 6:04 mark. I wonder what's the name of it. NFL Films plays that song a lot for the team highlights in the late 80's

When you look back 1988 was the turning point of the NFL into "modern-day football". There was more additions to team access, there was more media coverage because the expansion of cable tv, ESPN, HBO Sports became stalwarts of coverage, dynamic NFL Films cameras and angles, clear audio sounds on the field and sidelines. It felt like the NFL went "Hollywood"...
    But...
...it also felt like the beginning of scripted games, it felt like vegas dictated the outcomes of soo many games (including the Super Bowl) especially the superbowl...
Player using PEDs...I can almost bet anything the 88' year in the NFL there were stories we never heard about with players losing contracts, going bankrupt, being hospitized for mental illness, attemped suicides, and domestic violence.
I'm not saying these things did not exist before the 1988 season, but I believe it was the gateway to future egregious actions by the NFL and its players.
As spectacular as the 1988 year was in pro football, it was probably the biggest catalyst and the most damning year in what we call modern day football.
But we're still watching and endorsing this sport every year, because its hard to hate the thing that makes us feel good...even if its for a couple days out of the week.
Football will never be the same...
...but then again...did it ever really change...?

Bills blew a #1 seed by losing 3 out of their last 4 regular season games, including a loss to the dogshit Buccaneers where they scored a whopping 5 points.
The Bills had a Super Bowl worthy defense in 1988. Our offense screwed us too many times.

At 19:48 they said that it was the Bills first postseason victory in 23 years. But that is wrong! The Bills beat the Jets in the Wild Card round in 1981, so it was the Bills first postseason win in seven years.
