I have the Imperial Troop Transport. Didn't know there was a grey battery cover variation. This is the best early Expanded Universe toy done. It was featured in the Marvel Comics SW comics, along with the Sandcrawler and Dewback, probably as a way to sell toys.
Very cool. I am curious what is used for the sound. Understanding more now, I would have to disassemble. The sounds still sound too slow. I had this as a kid and it went from SW to GI Joe vehicle. The prison compartment was also engineering when I played. I loved this thing. Already preordered the new one!
Hey I finally got my original uploaded in a vid! I show how to take it apart (and what screws not to touch), the record player inside, the storybooklet, instructions, and Kenner box. The SFX "in action" with figures. A Jawa Sandcrawler and Blue Snaggletooth make a cameo ; I also show how I re-applied labels. Great toy!
Got this boxed and complete and instruction sheet. Had a go at repairing it and it works like it's brand new. Nice vehicle. First one to be made that wasn't in the films. But of course back then when much stuff wasn't wasn't available AND it talked well it was a no brainer. Also I see you have the grey cover for the BC which is very rare. You don't see those much at all as opposed to the more common red covers.
I got this at a toy show recently, and it took some tinkering, but I managed to get the sounds working and it sounds perfect. It has the right pitch and everything!
What is it making the voices if it's whirring? is it something close to a record player or something? But it sounds a little like those pull string talking toys of the '80s.
I actually think its plastic trips, these pieces of plastics have etchings on them and when pulled and released create noise similarly like that of a record therefore producing the whirring sound of the plastic being pulled through the machine which makes the noise or sound clip possible. Also why are you always in these corners of youtube.
Fun note, this vehicle was actually featured in the early Marvel Star Wars series (Star Wars Weekly in the UK). I'd love to see it pop up in some modern Expanded Universe stuff.
This is the first Star Wars vehicle that was just off screen 📺 it’s a clever toy with a primitive record player with a resonator type speaker 🔈 Million dollar 💵 question what does the switch do in side the compartment ??? Mine makes the record play slower In the Colonies they made two versions of this one that was nonfunctional and the one shown above I took working electronics out of a junker and in staled them in the non functioning one for a one off custom Hope to see some new videos soon
Not the films, but it does turn up in some of Marvel's early Star Wars comics - I think there's one particular story between Episode IV and V, where Luke has returned to Tattooine for some reason, and he sees the Imperial Troop Transport showing past. (The real reason for its inclusion, is most likely that because they only had so man reference photos to work from, the artists drawing the Star Wars strips just went out and bought the Kenner vehicles, so they could have them as reference material from all sorts of angles. For the same reason, a lot of illustrations of the TIE Fighters show it with the Kenner toy TIE Fighter's battery box behind the central sphere of the fuselage.
Mine must have been a second model. it didn't make any noises and I used the old battery part to store weapons and the inside was completely empty for even more stuff
A troop transport is supposed to be released sometime soon from the Rebels line. I doubt it will have any sound like this one had. A remake of a nostalgic piece like this is a plus in my book. Great review by the way!
This vehicle was actually in Return of the Jedi, in a longer version of the hanger scene before Han hands Lando the Millenium Falcon. You can probably find it on TH-cam somewhere.
*Stormtrooper puts the restraint on Leia* Leia: "Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask!" _later:_ Imperial officer: "I have never seen so many blaster holes in one person before!"
I love the fact that the thought process behind this is basically "Yeah, when we wanna transport troops around, we'll just have them stand on the sides the whole trip, with no protection or way to relax, it'll be great!"
When I was younger, when the figures came out, my only issue with them were that they did not have elbow or knee joints like G.I.Joe.Of course the same applies for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe line.I like your videos
I love gijoes to death but for me it seems starwars figures would last longer or you could play tougher with them more then the Joe's figures I loved the troopers heads cause you didn't have to worry about them breaking off.
It can sound more accurate if you play the SFX when it’s flat. I found it slows down the SFX when it’s tilted. I shot videos of how to un-sieze the motor in which case it shows the plastic record inside. I also did my original Millennium Falcon, TIE Fighter, and working on the X-wing. They’re all the same 3-volt motor spinning a plastic gear against a plastic strip. The ITT of course is spinning the plastic record. The acoustics inside the shape of the vehicles basically differ the sound. I have the Dark Tower game which has a motor. It takes the mystery out of it though! lol The ITT can play at random if you don’t let each SFX play ‘til it stops or after you first fix it. Funny and frustrating at the same time. Once it settles in I can’t help but press it once a day : When I put up a dedicated Star Wars channel I’ll let everyone know.
actionjackman Since I finally got my Collectible channel up (I'm also amusement420 and yardhaunt2000 and a couple other channels over the years lol) I'm going to upload a video of that soon. I think I included the box and Instructions and an insert that was a sort of story booklet. If I recall I had to use a Canon PowerShot so the quality isn't fantastic but I have proper lights set up. I uploaded the Falcon and TIE fighter. I had my ITT working for a quite a while. I would press the buttons every day. Then it started to slow down. I haven't bothered to take it apart again. But it was fun hearing the audio after all these years. I would also have to glue the labels that identify the sounds back on. They dry out.
actionjackman Wasn't it the fact that 'Rebels' animation harks back to Ralph McQarrie's original artwork? Brings back loads of memories seeing your video's mate! I remember having the die-cast tie-fighters whose side 'panels' you could take off. 12" boba -fet with the 'firing hook' thing on its back. Loads of stuff! Must be in my old girl's attic still!
Great review, thanks so much for sharing it with us. I give you a sub, great stuff really digging the channel. If you get a chance please check out mine, I do Star Wars dioramas and other things involving figures.
They included a nod to this toy in episode 7 of The Mandalorian. :)
It was featured in the Rebels animated show a few years earlier.
And it also returned in season 2!
Don't know if someone mentioned this but in Empire Strikes Back the rebels use these inside Echo Base
@@ImperialScoundrel I could be wrong, but I thought I saw one of these trooper transports on the rebel base on Yavin 4 too.

This toy was one of my favorites as a kid. Glad to see it in the cartoons and Mando.

Very cool you got it working. Any battery cover at all is a bonus with this. Bad placing for an easily lost part.

Cartoonyworld109 Brilliant! Glad to hear there are still working ones out there.

Funny, I came here just after watching an Ashens video you'd commented on, and, bam! You're here, too.

Ah wow, Thanks for the info. Do you know how long the record technology lasted before chips replaced it?

Larry Bundy Jr Once again, Larry Bundy Jr is confirming my theory that he's connected to every single TH-cam video on a quantum level.
More like Six Steps to Kevin Bacon, except instead of Kevin Bacon, it's Larry Bundy Jr.
I found out, it was a miniature record and stylus that made the sounds (not quite as 'electronic' as one might think)
That must be actual tape with these samples on it.
LOved this toy.

I have the one that came out after this one, in '81. I remember getting it at Sears. Ha! Mine has no audio, but it's still pretty dope...
This was my first star wars vehicle. I had no idea what it was but I loved it. Followed by INT-4.
I had to recompose myself when I saw it in Rebels.

I believe that's called the Imperial Cruiser. It was an exclusive to Sear possibly. Different stickers too?
Great review, such an iconic star wars vehicle. Quite rare, even back in the day

watching the review made me think, my battery cover on this was red not grey?
*Stormtrooper puts the restraint on Leia*
Leia: "Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask!"
_later:_
Imperial officer: "I have never seen so many blaster holes in one person before!"
i had that Toy in 1979. great times. played it alot.
Love this toy I put the record player in the newer version
I love the fact that the thought process behind this is basically "Yeah, when we wanna transport troops around, we'll just have them stand on the sides the whole trip, with no protection or way to relax, it'll be great!"
Josh Miller Works inside a base or something, not really for flyin through space though
I don't think one is rarer than the other, but generally these are missing entirely, I have a few of these and only 1 has the cover.
Very cool piece. I'm actually pretty impressed by the sounds on this one, not just a buzz kind of sound :) And as always, great review!
Thanks mate!, shame they didn't use the feature on the ATAT! That would have been cool.
Does it have wheels?
Wow the sounds still work.
After 50 years
LegitMan335 its 40
i love this piece, lots of playability
It was damn cool back in the day. Thanks mate!
That sounds like it's using a record mechanism similar to a See 'n Say, except driven by an electric motor.
When I was younger, when the figures came out, my only issue with them were that they did not have elbow or knee joints like G.I.Joe.Of course the same applies for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe line.I like your videos

i've got one of these tucked away somewhere!
I liked the fact they used a similar design in the Star Wars rebels series
awesome review
Thanks luke I never seen one here in the states
erictuna01 Cheers mate!
Absolutely! Hmm, i wonder why they didn't.
I always thought this toy should have been a rebel transporter
It is, you can see one in the rebel base in a new hope.
I guess that I and my brother shouldn't have sold our Troop Transporter at a family garage sale around 1990 for something like $2.00...
And I shouldn't have donated both my brother's and mine to charity years ago. Shouldn't given the charity money, and kept my dear troop transports!
Honestly, this is a lot better than the new Hasbro one.
I have seen that scene, it is very similar to this vehicle

thanks mate, hope you like the channel!
your reviews are cool unlike that mihcac guy who complains about everything
bit cold for the guys in the side compartments
Death squad commander sounds much better than Star destroyer commander. But as kids adults thought Death squad was more than we could handle.
I have that plus the box.
cool bit of info, thanks mate
Thanks to Mando this is now canon!!!!
It was so awesome seeing it in live action
@@jobobbob5825 Yes it was!👍😊
Yeah, that's about the way mine ended up sounding like after like 25 years...
C3PO voice sounds like hes possessed lol
Yeah...that's about the way my mine ended up sounding like after 25 year or so
Had it
nice feature though
Funny how nobody said anything about It being in Star Wars: Rebels.
Benster Piszczek Amazing they dug this one up for Rebels
