Looks like it out of time. Like those old tractors we sometimes play with and pull all around the barnyard with a good tractor trying to get it running ! Rings n smoke is fun !.😛
If that has jake heads , you might have a stuck jake break is why it wont start? Does it have a turbo? Is it a 1676 or a 3116 Cat? I can kinda hear it when you were pop starting that old girl , but determining by the exhaust smoke theres a cylinder that has something wrong with it , seems like #5 or 6 because a steady stream of smoke should be coming out... or your down a cylinder? It's hard to determine through video but , through just sound a visual it seems like the jake break is stuck on
I always thought if you pull start a diesel backwards it will just stop the engine cause when you pop the clutch the tandems just lock up anyways. If you do it in reverse the engine wants to suck air into the exhaust and blow it out injectors. Is that correct?
Apparently not. I just roll started an ‘87 LTL Ford quad axle dump truck in reverse about 3 weeks ago. One of the onlookers commented that, “that was old school”. “These young boys around here, don’t even realize what you just did”!
So somebody you knew bought this thing and they said it was a strong runner? What's the story on this??? Gotta love shady ass people when it comes to selling vehicles.
I’m a truck buyer for overseas customers that restore them. We bought this “running”. 90% of the trucks we buy folks lie about. This is a perfect example. The problem was the turbo was totally blown apart. Like decimated. This cost is another $4500 for shipping at the port due to not running. But “it ran fine” according to the seller. Liar.
@@fosterbennett4569 no it doesn't. As long as it'll pass safety and is reliable. I'll show you truck that need complete restoration. That's nothing. That's a lazy restoration compared to how bad they get. Also a new look sucks.
@@1965Gindy agreed brother. That truck is perfect the way it is. Get her runnin the way she should and polish up what shiny parts are on it. New exhaust and riiiiiide.
Its got to be a precup engine they are stubborn to start to start with, it was being hydraulic'ed on fuel, its going to need work, it could possible sporting bent valves now.
In this case being most likely a 1676 if not a 3116 Caterpillar with it not wanting to start it probably had a stuck jake break , that would cause flames to go out the exhaust , if not maybe blown turbo , or it could be a fuel delivery problem. But if you listen to when they were pop starting it , it sounded like the pistons were slapping, that noise is a stuck jake brake decompressing the engine where it's not going to fire properly....

Looks like an injector is stuck open, either that or y'all cracked a tip trying to pull start it, I've seen that with bad head gaskets. I'd go for the first since she was igniting all that nice hot unburned fuel.
Wow that's some serious dribbling nozzles to pull that trick, have to wonder what the EGTs were like for the fuel to combust out of the stack. Why would you ever tension up a chain against a new chrome bumper? Seems like an unnecessary risk than just trying to jump it off. If it don't crank with volts just roll it back in the shop it ain't done being fixed yet lmao
Watch the whole video, we did try to jump it to no avail…. The reason we wanted to start it because it had to be loaded on my trailer to to the port where it then got load on a vessel/ship going to the Netherlands where it’s getting restored.
Wouldn't it had been easier/smarter to try and start it in, or closer to the building/garage?, looks like something I would do, I wouldn't hardly call that "running", lol, it's firing enough too maybe get it on the trailer under it's own power, MAYBE!, if you hurry, lol, it's flaming like that because the exhaust is full of oil, the exhaust is full of oil because that engine is whipped/wore slap out, lol
