I spent time as an Infantryman in the Mountains, Forest, Winter Warfare, Desert, and Jungle. The Jungle was by far the hardest and everything changes from the formations you use, navigation, communications, hygiene, etc.

J.O.T.C. Fort Sherman (Panama)... on night operations... we literally had monkeys bombarding us from the jungle canopy above. They were throwing anything they could find down upon us. One squaddie, at the back of our patrol line, was actually knocked out by a large branch/tree limb (courtesy of one irate jungle monkey).

The effort that some people made to actually get there and then suddenly civil, their dreams shattered, looking sorry for themselves as they were given the train tickets 🤣

You were lucky : I used to know a Korean guy who engaged at the same time as I did as he wanted to do the same as you but they did not let him resign before the end of the 4 months instruction classes that were hell for him. He also wanted to be able to tell his story after a quick return home, but he had to pay a higher price for it than he initially thought. And I think he regreted his tourism attempt a lot in the end.

There was a captain I knew in the British army who went AWOL at some point time during training for the FFL. I asked him what it was like and his response was ‘they make the British army look professional’! Bloody hell I thought, because the British army is a bit wank really.

He was correct, and the British army are the best military org on the planet. You obviously don't know a great deal.

They are supposed to be like special forces but we never hear of them being deployed anywhere. Plus I thought the French flag was white.
