    La Familia by Poncho is one of my favorites, and that sax solo brings tears to my eyes! One of the best things my ears have encountered.

    Poncho and his band were my first love on latin jazz. Giovanni and Richie are martians, Poncho has that warmess of a human conga player. Thank you Erick.

    To me, Poncho is just classy and tasteful. He never seems too showy or elaborate, and he isn't trying to imitate an orchestra, always discreet and tasteful.
    By the way, Eric, it takes a true conguero to get so much out of a conga passage; love to hear how excited you are hearing all the nuances of a particular pattern, like the Familia example. Cheers!

    I saw Poncho on the cover of Modern Drummer about 20 yrs ago, then I saw he was coming to town. So I gave it a try, it was my first taste of Latin Jazz at Yoshis' in Oakland, CA.
    Oh Mang! 🤌

    My idol is Ray Barreto. I use to listen to my dads records when he was at work. He was very protective of his vinyls so I had to make sure I placed them back perfectly. Poncho is the man!! I appreciate your vids man. Your keeping the spirit of congas alive. ✌

    Ponchos sound is in my opinion is minimalist. By that I mean that “Less is better”. He keeps it simple but has a unique style. He reminds me of Manny Oquendo (Timbalero) the leader of Orchestra Libre. They play only the sounds that are necessary and are not concerned with speed. Giovanni is amazing in that his speed and complexity, along with his control was extraordinary to say the least!

    Yet another great video. Nice work! I just listened to "La Familia" for the first time. Thanks for the hand-me -down. I can absolutely see why this one sparked a reawakening, epiphany, etc. the first time you heard it. A super talented and humble upright bass player once told me, "be subtle, and drop bombs." For me that meant, it's the notes you don't play (Maybe cliche, but don't care). Poncho's solo reminds me of just that; super concise, accurate, stripped down and refined. Good one. Thanks.

    Hi Eric. Congratulations for your lessons, they help me a lot.
    I want to give you 2 pieces of advice:
    1) When you explain a new pattern it would be great to know which is the beat count. In some videos you do, in others you don´t.
    2) Please explain the positon of the clave in each excercise. This will help a lot of us that are beginning to learn these stuff.
    Thanks in advance! Love your work.

    Thanks so much for the excellent videos. I'm still having a hard time getting my head around something. Maybe you can help me out. I have no issues with technique - I've been a drumset player for 20 years who has a strong understanding of odd times, rudiments etc. Here is where I am stuck: I am having a difficult time understanding two aspects of musicality: When is it acceptable to make up your own rhythm/groove//tumbao and how often and in what situations should one improvise within or spice up a standard tumbao? I'm very self-conscious about perhaps being too creative and doing too much of my own thing coming from a progressive rock and jazz kit background where that's more of the point.

    As always awesome! Got a question for you. And I know you're a busy guy, so no rush. How much time do you spend practicing evey week? And what do you mainly focus on while you practice? Thanks Eric!

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly it really depends on the week.... I can tell you that I study congas either by listening or watching some video everyday for at least an hour.... but sitting down in front of my set... sometimes if I’m too busy maybe only 1 hour in a whole week... and i have a practice routine to warm up and then I practice whatever I was listening to or watching during that week.

    I am thinking that this is based on the 3-2 son clave. since the (&3)tumbadora & (4&)conga are the same as in the 3 side variation normal tumbao.

    Can I start out with just one drum or if I'm serious...should I try to get at least two drums to start? And, what is your honest opine of the LP Matador? Or would I be better off saving more money for better drums but used? Thanks very much.

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hawkrider88 it’s always best to start off with two.... just because Just One may limit your development BUT getting just one drum is a great place to start either way.... the LP Matadors are a great choice for affordable drums... good shape and wood and they’re workhorses... can’t go wrong with them if those are your first drums... there are more affordable choices like Meinl or Toca... just good to explore before making that kind of purchase
